So my dad said he was a yoyo player while he was a kid, he said he played with a duncan bumble bee, while at us nats I got him a cenote and said he wanted it responsive, would this work for making a bearing responsive? I know there are other options but was wondering if this could work at all
It’ll probably work, depending on how thick it is it might wear out after a bit.
Given that it’s unresponsive, you would likely fair better with grease or switching to a narrow bearing.
agree with Andy and Steve. i tried 3 in 1 at one point and i didn’t find it to be thick enough to deliver snappy response for any real amount of time. grease is the word
Alight thanks!
A big thing that held me up as a beginner is that the direction the yoyo (i believe ive seen this called the polaroty) is spinning influences the side of the string you’re going to stall on. Its why going from a trapeze stall to a trapeze stall generally has an element in between (dumptrucks rotate the yoyo on the perpendicular axis, making the zines adds an additional regen with the planet hop)
Get comfortable going from trapeze stall to brother stall, as well as with the two tricks i mentioned earlier, and it will open a lot of play.
Zipper stalls are also great and flashy!
Thank you! My next question is, for overall maintenance and feel of the response. How do I know when to grease the bearing? What does a snappy response feel?
when it doesn’t feel right to you. response, like most things yoyo is totally personal preference from so snappy it almost doesn’t sleep at all to it almost needs a bind. personally i like it snappy enough that i always get a good pop back to my hand but with enough forgiveness that if i play cleanly i can land some basic 1a tricks
My goal on response is when I want it to come back, it does.
If I ask it to return and it hesitates, I am adding lube.
My Process is to start with thin lube. If that doesnt work… Thick Lube… Still not what I want… Grease.
It is easier to add response than take it away.
My preference is the yoyo being able to sleep and with a slight tug it returns. Snappy is when you call the yoyo back it does so instantly without hesitation.
Been trying to learn the double or nothing stall the past couple days but I’m struggling hard. Usually just end up landing a double or nothing, sometimes with no spin left. Been using a legendary wing and psych butterfly. I assume I want to tug with my throw hand has I’m clearing my index finger for the second time?
I do a softer throw than normal and give it slack after the string hits my NTH the second time. I give it slack by drifting both of my hands closer to to the yoyo as it’s swinging.
For me, what seems to work better on most stalls rather than “tugging” at the yoyo is to simply allow the string to get some slack by moving my hand(s) towards the yoyo. That doesn’t seem to work for everyone, but is just a thought and something you could try.
That said, if you’re landing a double or nothing, that means you’re keeping your fingers too far apart. You need enough slack in the string that it can wind back up part way before it lands, which means your fingers need to be that much closer together than they would be for a standard DON.
@washyjoshe gave excellent advice. Slower throws typically help when it comes to stalls.
However, if you’re trying to swing it around all the way, like a typical double or nothing, you probably will need to give it some juice to get it all the way around and still have enough momentum for it to roll back up in a stall. It might be easier to learn this way with a bearing first then transfer what you learn to fixie. It can totally be figured out on fixie if that’s the route you want to go though.
Another good option is to learn insta-double or nothing. I have a (sort of) tutorial on it.
Just holler if there is anything I can explain better!
One thing you could try to help get the speed of the throw down is practice standard trapeze stalls (and/or brother stalls) but add a single pinwheel beforehand. That’s the same speed/tempo you want for a DON stall.
Thanks for all the good advice everyone. Pulled out the Plasm last night and landed a couple by push my hands together. Not consistent but I’ll get there Once I get better with a bearing I’ll move back to a fixie.
This might be a dumb question but what is steez?
Not a dumb question. I’ll tag @Yodaddyo He is the godfather of steez and would be able to give a more in depth answer
