I clocked myself a few times working on weaves this week… missed a barrel roll a few days ago and cought it in my eye. Lucky no black eye this time🤩

Same thing happened to me! I was throwing my Tom Kuhn SB-1 when I smacked it against the floor. Much to my amusement, it spins smooth as glass now!

Nothing makes me more anxious than that moment when you’re inspecting the yoyo for damage after an errant throw.

But do this many people really yo-yo over concrete? Standing over carpet has definitely saved me from countless dings. And yet I have eli-hopped into the ceiling numerous times. I unexpectedly hit the wall once when I didn’t tie the knot securely because I was trying to test different string lengths. No broken windows so far… :crossed_fingers:

i hit the window with my massive offstring, haven’t broken anything… yet.

I throw outside everyday…i live in NYC… lots of concrete. That’s why i use MYY as one of my EDC. Eventually i will hit concrete, happens once a month maybe… now in going to start some 5A… desperado for outside practice…i’m sure the eventual ding won’t hurt as much.

I almost exclusively throw over concrete floors at work and in the basement at home. At least its smooth concrete

I yoyo over concrete quite often, but I guess the most heart-breaking dings I made were when I put my yoyo from a pocket to put it in my bag, and it slipped away on the asphalt :scream:

Rather have a dinged yoyo that I play with everywhere and rack up fun hours than a glass smooth yoyo that I only play with in the comfort of my own room

i dont have a pic cuz i gave mine away but my b-grade czech point had my worst ding (the biggest not the most heart breaking cuz its a cheap yoyo and it was a b-grade) but a small chunk of the outside rim got taken off now i yoyo on carpet mostly because of quarantine.

So that’s how you tune a bearing yo-yo. I know some tricks for tuning wood throws but I never knew what folks were talking about with the bearing stuff.

Honestly the obsession with not doing so leaves me a little perplexed. You have a yoyo and want to yoyo, why does the ground have to matter? I think this whole MIB BST crap has people hording and coddling yoyos in a way that just doesn’t jive with the hobby. Is the rare mistake-to-ding really a reason not to play with a toy meant to be played?

I hate that it’s so hard for me to just sell some of my yoyos. I really only need one since I don’t 2a. But collecting is a huuuuuuuge aspect of the hobby. Why are we so excited to get our hands on the next yoyo that does the same thing as the next? I’m about to take my Tishee and go meditate on a mountain forever. :man_in_lotus_position:

Where are you drawing this conclusion from?

At some point – I think it was MoonageMin’s strawman comment – this conversation abruptly detoured into this sort of false dichotomy where we now only have 2 choices: throw over concrete or never throw at all – there is an abundance of middle ground here. Some of ya’ll need to relax a bit and just let people enjoy the hobby how ever they see fit. Sheesh.

A guy I know at work has over 1,000 Matchbox cars still in the packaging. I guess, like this guy, some people have put the goal of obtaining / collecting above the getting to play with. I guess with yoyos it’s pretty hard to tell if something has never been played with unless it came in a bubble package.

Hey, I once bought a collection of soccer balls and never took them outside. Minty! (and no green stains) Then one day I just kicked that idea out the window! :soccer:

I guess it’s the same with kids, some people just put them on a shelf and never do a thing with them. Kind of a waste.

Excuse me, forgot what the discussion was. Time to go yo and see if I get that thing called a ding!

Hey man @TheHelveticaScenario,

I genuinely apologise if my comments offended you, and if it derailed this thread, as for this was not my intention.

I wasn’t trying to “Knock down a straw man” if anything I was trying to defend a kid (@PCaliyoyos) why dinging yo-yos on concrete might not be due to just carelessness, things like that just happens when you yoyo over different surfaces all the time be it carpet, concrete, grass etc.

People spending their hard earned money, on their own personal things, I believe should be free to do with it as they please. Be it a collection piece, only to be used over carpet, or they don’t care and just play with it wherever and anywhere they like (assuming it’s appropriate time and place to yoyo of course).

I was merely trying to point out that yes @peytoncali11dinged his yoyo twice on concrete over a short space of time, but it’s not a big deal, and if he yoyos everywhere like I do it’s kinda inevitable and shouldn’t be frowned upon.

Also I personally don’t mind dinged yoyos as long as I am having a good time (I do put them through TVs and what not after all) and that I personally prefer that for my own personal use, than not using it for the fear of damage. That’s just purely my own personal opinion and the stance I personally take on my own yoyos.

As a result I sold my TiShee today, because the fear of damaging such an expensive yoyo stopped me from enjoying it outside my room, and not using it was stressing me out.

YMMV

I’m not trying to start an argument either by the way. Please don’t misunderstand me

I backed my car into a pole the other day to show how much I love driving my car and how good I am at it.
