Dings dings dings

No worries and no need to apologize, I wasn’t offended by anything you or anyone else said. If anything, I like hearing what people honestly believe hence my original question about yo-yoing over concrete.

Reading comment after comment about mishaps reminded me of this hypothetical dialogue between a doctor and his patient:

Patient: “Hey, doc. It hurts when I do [this].”
Doctor: “Well, don’t do [that].”

That kind of illustrates my belief is that if you don’t want dings in your yoyo, you can take meaningful steps to mitigate it. But then subsequent several comments were tantamount to “OMG!! You can’t have fun with your yoyo unless you’re trashing it along the way.” (That’s me paraphrasing if that wasn’t clear  ) which I thought was a bit over the top and unnecessary.

I do understand you are paraphrasing, but yeah wasn’t my intention to come across that way.

Not trying to justify myself (trying but not trying lol) but yeah I am all for whatever floats your boat, people should not care if it doesn’t match their preference.

I think I made it clear that my preference is to just play with what I want to play with where I want to play at. Be it over concrete or in side a TV

But I am also cool with everything inbetween.

Anyway, photos or it didn’t happen I had this exact same convo yesterday somewhere else that people should be able to do what makes them happy without being judged.

And I thought I was obviously goofing on @PCaliyoyos about his 2 dings. In 2018 I knicked my brand new Replay on concrete and right away thought about buying a replacement. I was upset. I rarely use it anymore but when I do I can’t even see the knick. I don’t think anyone purposely dings their yos and everyone here is sickened when they hit the ground but…just play on. It’s gonna happen.

Yeah sorry I should have made that clear, I didn’t think your comment was serious, and I wasn’t trying to be serious either.

Not very good a serious talk myself

Every hobby has collectors and doers. Both are important, and most people are some combination of the two. It’s fun to watch someone who has mastered a skill, and honing a skill means failing a lot. Getting really good at something often means risking your equipment and your body. Fortunately yoyo injuries are very tame compared to sports or racing.

Preservation gives a connection to the past that photos and videos can never provide. Seeing a picture of a Model T in perfect condition can’t compare to actually sitting in one. The firsthand experience gives you a glimpse of the how things used to be. Knowing where we started makes it much easier to appreciate how far we’ve come.

I don’t have any children of my own so I consider almost all of you my children and will treat you as such. If that means scolding some of you for damaging the expensive toys I bought you with my hard-earned money then so be it.

I have an old black/black rim Yoyojam Hitman from way back in the day that has a lot of deep dings. It was my main carry for years and my college campus was mostly smooth concrete or pebblecrete. It got so bad that I had to sand one of the rims to prevent cuts whenever I did a palm or arm grind.

I much prefer my yoyos to be as clean and ding-free as possible. I generally try to take care of my yoyos and mostly play on carpet or on surfaces unlikely to ding or scrape them up. Personnally, I see dings, cuts, and marks as distracting to the overall look and as a failure on my part to protect them. This mentality also extends to my other hobbies too. B-grades, cheap, or poorly made yoyos are played with much less concern though.

@MoonageMin @eternalmetal @TheHelveticaScenario @ChrisFrancz let’s all just chill. i don’t care i dinged my yoyos. in fact, i’m happy i did because it shows how much i love my yoyos and the hobby, it shows i’m not scared to use my stuff that i’ve bought/given to me. yes your right it hurts every time i ding it, but i get over it, it’s not going to effect my life, it’s not going to change my view on that yoyo.

i know I sound snarky and mean… but, I don’t want to be mean, I don’t want to be snarky. please don’t take this personally. if i did offend any of you, please message me privately.

Can you post a pic of that Hitman? Having it all through college and getting all banged up. There has to be lots of sentimental memories attached to it.

You did not sound remotely snarky or mean. I like when people @ me in a post…it makes me feel like one of the cool and popular kids who always have fancy brand sneakers and get invited to parties.

I wasn’t referring to you specifically, I just think the idea of keeping perfectly mint yoyos kind of diminishes the fun. A ding or two is irrelevant to me. No harm meant.

I offered him more and he didn’t take it :joy:

Oh definitely! Lots of great memories and good times with that yoyo. It’s currently in my older yoyo case at my brother’s house right now. I’ll try getting some pictures of it this weekend.

sounds impossible, but i cracked my madhouse rad. was just messing around.

Good ol’ Hitman. We’ve been through a lot together haven’t we, old friend?

In the second pic, you can see one of the dings that I could not sand out on the left rim. I should try sanding the dings and scrapes on the right rim too.

With a fresh string it’s beautiful! Please don’t sand out too much of the character!
