There’s a store chain I love where I live where you can pick up Kershaw stuff. Been loving the benchmade inspired liner locks. What do you guys think of D2 steel? I like it because it’s durable and lasts a while before needing a touch up, but it corrodes fairly easily.

D2 is totally rad for an edc. The people who hate on d2 either don’t know how to sharpen or don’t want to sharpen their knives haha

Definitely agree. D2 is awesome if it’s treated well. It’s technically a tool steel, it’s a lot tougher than people give it credit for, it can stand up to some abuse. Heck, 8CR13mov is also pretty good for EDC that’s being used too. If I had to choose between the two, it’d be D2 but they are both great ā€œbudgetā€ steels.

Some folks online just chase steel dragons sometimes. All of the super steels you see are just silly if you’re not actually using your knife. Don’t get me wrong, they have their place and I love higher end steels as much as the next guy, but a lot of it seems to just be for vanity reasons versus functionality reasons.

Facts @cowmamba  What do you think about VG-10? I have had a Delica 4 for a few years with that steel and I love it. Keeps a great edge.

VG-10 is great! All of the Spyderco Seki City stuff is amazing. VG-10 is like D2 that’s been training at the gym 5 days a week haha! It’s way tougher, more corrosion resistant (it’s stainless). D2 can have a higher edge retention but, VG-10 is less prone to chipping. All around it’s an amazing steel for what it is. I really like it.

Kizer used to have a ā€œbudgetā€ line under the name Tangram. I have a few somewhere in my storage with acuto 440. That is super rad steel.

I had an Endura 4 for like seven years that I carried every day til it got stolen in 2017, I still miss that knife. Never had a problem with VG-10. Easy to sharpen from what I remember. Not the ā€œgreatestā€ steel by any stretch but tbh steel choice is largely overrated for urban EDC purposes anyway.

My old Kershaw works fine for me on a daily basis even though I’ll admit my edc often is a mini box cutter cause really I don’t have much I need a pocket knife for when out and about other than opening packages/boxes.

I’ve owned hundreds of knives and I always go back to the Delica- just checks all the boxes for me in an EDC. Vg-10 is just fine for edc. Admittedly, I’m in an office setting nowadays, but even before I never was a steel snob, ease of sharpening is important.

I used to carry a knife when I worked a job shipping and recieving, I wish I would have been able to carry this instead. Milwaukee Fastback 8-3/4 in. Folding 6-in-1 Utility Knife Red 1 pc Mfr# 48-22-1505 - Ace Hardware

I have one now, and 90% of the time it’s more practical for home projects.

I fear despite however some folks might compensate or convince themselves otherwise, there isn’t anything truly practical about knife collecting :joy: even if you regularly use them. In almost all situations something cheaper and simpler would work better. It’s more like pointy yo-yos. Being purchased because the machining feels nice, or chasing that feeling you get from finally getting that one piece. It’s all a behold my stuff. I’m also guilty of it I’m just trying to be self aware haha.

Yeah, collecting anything is mostly impractical. I think knives and yo-yos can be in a similar position, just because the more familiar you are with yo-yos the more things you can notice and have opinions about. Same with knives, except that for knives, they are tools and slightly more practical, and you might gravitate towards a knife that feels more comfortable, efficient, and secure in your hand during a job. I’m agreeing with you, just reflecting on their similarities and differences.

A box knife in general is designed for cutting and replacing the blade, so it won’t be misused as a pry bar, and is best for using for scoring and small cutting jobs. At my old job, I would use my knife a few years ago on opening boxes that were taped shut, and would score the cardboard to break down boxes. I would also spend time cleaning tape adhesive off the blade, which I wouldn’t have wasted time doing with a box knife. I should have used box knife’s. (Shocker, should have used a box knife for boxes.)

At the same job I broke a locking mechanism on a knife using it as a pry bar in a malfunctioning key machine, and it closed on my finger while prying. It was a very cheap knife from a no name brand, and I really learned that having a specific tool for the job I was doing was essential for safety, and efficiency. It turned cutting a car key for a customer into an ER visit and some minor stiches. (ER visit was required by my workplace, worker’s comp and legal related.) I’m pretty sure the customer ended up waiting much longer for their key. I don’t remember what happened to that key.

I love a quality pocket knife. They all get used whether camping, hiking, fishing or at work. No shelf queens.
