I make my own string. I recommend you experiment with different brands/types of thread from your nearest Joann’s. I posted this awhile back:
To Morgoroth:
I’ve been experimenting with silk, rayon, nylon, triobial poly, normal poly, cotton, denim, and different thread companies. Like Buddy Jim, I like these thread types, but I’m still experimenting.
Just a warning, silk is CRAZY expensive. I forgot the exact amount, but It’s something like $5 for 100 yards. The best(In terms of play) poly thread I’ve found is $3 for a spool of over 2,500 yards.
But poly is an overall good yoyo string, it’s strong, whippy, soft, and lasts a long time. Other threads vary, some companies of, lets say, cotton make their cotton rough, some make their cotton soft-just keep experimenting with different thread types and companies and you’ll find a company that makes their thread just the way you like.
To everyone who is starting to make yoyo string, I gave mlewis38 some tips earlier:
Keep experimenting with different thread companies, I use the thread “Toldi-Lock by Gutermann”, the plastic part of the spools themselves are grey and there is 2734 yards in one spool. I have found these strings are the best in terms of overall play. And in most threads of yoyo string selling, where they show the color options, I see they use the same thread. Also, if you ever need to buy tons and tons of spools, Joann’s usually have a 50% off thread sale in April…it saved me over $100 last spring.
Also, some thread types/tips:
Bulky nylon is soft, thick, has excellent binds, and is great for whips.
Rayon and Triobal polyester is thin and whippy, but painful on the hands and slippy binds.
Silk is interesting, kinda similar to cotton…I’ve made rough and soft strings from it, still experimenting cautiously…silk is ridiculously expensive.
Dual Duty polyester (small spools) is whippy and has decent binds, but slightly rough. The nice thing is that there is tons of bright/neon colors and even color blends.
Just a tip, adding single threads of whippy thread to other soft threads in a yoyo string made a soft string that is excellent with whips.
Hope that helped.
Oh, and Joann’s is having a special sale that is called “Daffodil Dash”, where many things throughout the store are 50% off-including thread. This sale lasts from April 10-16(Going on right now), so if you are willing to spend a bit of money then I suggest you go to your nearest Joann’s and use these tips to get yourself some of the best thread for yoyo strings. Also, another tip:
-Bulky Nylon is AMAZING. The string likes to unravel at the end of the string, but the string is super soft but amazingly whippy.
Sorry for the wall of text, hope that helped.
