First attempt at homemade strings

I got into yoyoing early last year and have really enjoyed it. I heard about people making their own strings and was curious since I enjoy processes like that. I watched a few videos, bought some thread, got out my drill, and got to work! I was really surprised at how simple the process is and how it can yield good results! The strings I made play surprisingly well and I think they look nice. I bought three different colors of standard polyester sewing thread and mixed them to make the different color strings.

If you have any tips, tricks, or cool strings you’ve made please feel free to share!

Excellent color choices! I really want to give it a go myself, but never get around to picking up thread to do so lol.

Nice! I just recently started making my own strings too, so I don’t have any tips or tricks yet. But I did randomly find glow-in-the-dark thread at the store yesterday and I didn’t realize that was an option! Super excited to get back home from my trip and test it out! Got a small spool of pink, blue, and green.

…ok… let me get this straight. You post images of the results of your first attempt at making string.

Your post most likely would/will interest people that never made string… have considered making string or might want to ‘possibly know’ a little more about string making.

So, not meant to ‘hijack’ your thread, but the information I provided(a view formed over 27 years of experience comparing thoughts with other yo-yo modders and players about uh… string and all other aspects of yoyo performance..

My info is not ‘over analyzing’. My view is for perspective. It’s logical, reasonable and reality based.

….But, you are correct. It does look like ‘I’m hijacking your thread’, in a way.

So, I have No problem respecting your request and removing the text.

Great looking string, regardless.

PS. If nobody clicks on the ‘edit’ I think they can still see my reply. If that possibility also upsets you, contact Andre or the Forum Mods directly and complain to them that my reply bothered/bothers you, and they can ‘scrub it’ completely.

You’re over-analyzing it all. I made some strings for fun and my own use. You should probably start a new thread for these thoughts instead of hijacking this post.

Try serger nylon. Even blends. I tried nylon and they worked really well for me. So much so I snagged many of the Zipline and Airtec when they are available.
I hope to get going again and make some more when time permits.
Fun to see what works best and what works better in different yoyos.

I picked up polyester thread because that seemed to be a common type of string and the first thing I found, but I’m definitely curious to try nylon and blends to see the differences. I assume when you say “even” you mean 50-50?

I prefer 100% nylon, but some of the Ziplines are 80/20 or 90/10 and I like them.
Doesn’t mean they are the best but it is really fun trying different combos to find your favorite .
Even the color changes of the same thread changes the string behavior or finished product.
Tension will end up different with different thread types also.

Originally I found I liked the thinner nylon (still do) because it helped me get rid of the ghost binds, but recently I started learning more fence binds and the slightly thicker helped with those and not too many ghost binds.

This thread relly motivated me to start making my own strings. And i dont even have a drill i just made two hooks out of wire and spin it by hand.
I was interested beforehand but always said one day i will start but never did. But yesterday i also bought some polyester thread to do some string and it worked out great. So today on my way home i stoped by all the fabric stores to look for nylon and got lucky at the fourth one. Now i just made my first nylon string, which for me also isnt perfect so its time to experiment with some blends.
Thanks for showing your results and pushing me by that to also start making string

Props for twisting by hand! They look good. I also just picked up some nylon string today to give it (and blends) a try.
