Every time I miss a bind after a sweet trick/combo, I watch this video.
This. They have lost, they know it, but they still want a win.
Anyway, here’s Wonderwall

String tension/spaghetti string I know looping is going to put tension on it but my absolute biggest frustration is having to let the string spin out, rewind it, put it back on my finger…and then do it again two throws later when I mess up again lol
Ok, I’ve got one…maybe three, but sort of related:
-
After spending literal months working on a new trick and feeling like I’ve got it pretty smooth, then watching someone else do it and realizing I still don’t really have it down.
-
Starting to learn a new trick and going from comfortable fun throwing to feeling like a total beginner again, with wrong wraps, missed strings and running out of spin. Not sure if that’s why Recess put Sisyphus on a yo-yo, but it makes sense to me.
-
Wanting to look comfortable while throwing but then realizing I’m doing a head bob every time the yo-yo lands on the string like I’m imagining I am the yo-yo and knowing that doesn’t smooth at all.
Ok, with that off my mind, back to positive thinking.
Learning how to do UFO and sidwinder has made looping one of my favorite playstyles
If you don’t know, those tricks will add/reduce string tension, depending on how you throw them. And, of course, because they are tricks, they will return to your hand (once you learn them, ofc)
Additionally, check out snap return (or any other return from dead throws). This will also enhance play experience on responsives (and unresponsives, but those are different tricks).
Edit to add links to tricks
Personally, I like UFO more, but pulling off a well executed Sidewinder puts a swell in my heart
For 2, that’s a natural part of the process, like don’t put pressure on yourself to instantly know how to do the trick. Like, yes, combos are just a bunch of beginner/intermediate tricks strung together, but remembering in which order to do them will take some time.
For 3, also natural. I bet you lean when you turn in games too, or dodge the slow moving missile from a boss. Be weird if you didn’t do any of that tbh
Mine’s personal, I don’t expect many to agree. But it seems like 9:10 of every new throw these days are just getting wider and wider.
Or! are relaunches of a previously retired or hard to get shape, I get excited, click through, and see: ‘we’ve reimagined the classic but we’ve made it wider!’
This is all personal preference. I’m a shorter guy, so I play with a shorter string and find wide throws just get in the way when working with most tricks. I like to stay around 45-47mm for 1a and smaller. Simply put, I’d like to occasionally be excited for a launch.
The good news is, I can pass on most launches, and my wallet is happy for it.
Tails in my binds
safety throws ftw!
Modern throws very rarely have good surfaces for grinding.
Wdym?
Many of the new throws don’t have a finish that lends itself well to arm grinds.
Sometimes I have an internal struggle with addiction to the forum, Facebook BST, and other yoyo related social media. Combine that with times when I hyper focus on trying to get the "perfect collection for me " and open every BST thread looking for “my precious” lol.
So my pet peeve is an internal struggle with self. Some days, I reign victorious, other days I fall horribly short and the forum takes time from more important things. I’m glad to have self awareness, and that leads to improvement, which I am seeing and it has been a breath of fresh air. It also has led to more yoyoing and less screen time. TMI? Probably, but I’m an open book in hopes that others in the same boat can read it and self reflect and grow as well.
Oh, and what @Snoopy said about arm grinds too, love me some arm grinds
Are you getting yo-yos that have a blasted finish? Because my modern blasted finish yo-yos grind just as well as my blasted yo-yos from 2010 and onwards.
my pet peeve is when your yoyo does the thing where it hits you in the face
I know what makes a yo-yo grind well, I just haven’t purchased any new yo-yos for awhile.
My Barracuda seems to grind well enough, I break it out any time I feel like doing grinds, but I don’t really like it for other tricks, it’s just too fast.
My pet peeve is how much I dislike changing strings. Because it means I play with gross strings. Boo me being my own pet peeve.
Also yay I could change my behavior and fix my pet peeve. But I probably won’t.
I wash my hands before I play. A habit I developed working on cars, I have to wash my hands before I do anything lol
Do you wash your hands before you wash your hands? lol
