Oh lovely. Looks so good
Just a quick trick
Apollo is such a good yoyo ![]()
Loving this 0a jade whip element
Sick!
I’m going to have to try that.
What is the throw? Is it a blank FH1?
Yeah FH1 and I magic erasered the image off the caps
Yo how did they score the 0a div at Colorado state? Just curious really…I tried to find the rules for that but couldn’t find those. Really just curious though
This is copied directly from the details Todd emailed me:
0A division rules and considerations!
My goal in creating the 0A division is to marry classic yoyo with modern yoyo. Give people that
want to compete the chance to do so. No need for trick ladders or crowd scored events, those
are fun events but this is more competition based.
0A is in my mind modern responsive. So a player can use any responsive yoyo. A fixed axle
Duncan butterfly, or a doc pop weekender, or even a freehand that is in responsive mode. The
only requirement for the yoyo is that it’s tug responsive.
Scoring. 0A is tricky to score because it lacks string hits. But scoring it as trick complexity works
well. For example if a player does a stall that’s 2 points. If they chain that to a brother stall, 2
more points, and chain it to a double or nothing stall that’s 4 points, double or nothing stall is
more difficult than a regular stall plus chained elements make it more difficult.
Repetition is allowed, to a degree, 0A has a lot of repeating elements in general, for example if
a player does a trapeze stall and then throughout the routine does a trapeze stall 4 more times it
should click 2 points each time. But if a player does a trapeze stall to a trapeze stall 4 times it
should not be counted. Repetition vs. Obvious repetition.
If someone does shoot the moon 2 times as part of the routine that will click 2 times per shoot
the moon, but if they start their routine and shoot the moon the entire time then that does not
count. Same with other repetitive 0A tricks, making da zines, planet hops, hop the fence etc.
Scoring should be 60% performance and 40% tech the same way that sport division is scored.
This is for 0A players who want to enjoy the laid back style of 0A not discounting the complexity
of 0A but to celebrate the roots.
Whoa wild rule set. Also they ended up opposite sport rules at 70% tech 30%evals hmmm I wonder why that changed
They used 1a prelim card this time. I believe they are hoping to have a dedicated 0a card next time.
In a 0A stand alone future scoring cars, would tricks like Split the Atom or Mach 5 get points in 0A competition since they are responsive tricks or is it limited to getting points for stall type tricks, kickflips, etc…. Basically asking if responsive string tricks would be worth ones time to incorporate into a 0A routine
This is a great, distilled example of why I fundamentally dislike typical yo-yo contest formats, and why I’d rather never see an 0a/fixed contest judged along “typical” standards. I understand that people are driven to WIN, and that the carrot of winning is a big part of what drives them to SHARE their ideas - which is absolutely what I want. But I think the attempted standardization/normalization/quantification of creative principles is both toxic and ineffective, and inevitably leads to stagnation.
Mach 5, Spirit Bomb, etc. are really challenging on highly responsive yo-yos, let alone fixed axle. They should absolutely score highly in a freestyle context. But if rules are set up to state that “THIS is the goal and what the division is ABOUT” (which, it could be argued, is NECESSARY for fair competition), then they could conceivably be considered valueless. This is very much like Hajime’s 2019 4a routine, which earned him 7th place despite melting everyone’s brain with an entirely Soloham double yo-yo performance. The rules were too focused on the stated goal of the style to allow for such a revolutionary concept. The idea of a trick not counting because “Oops - your 0a yo-yo was still spinning!” is just as icky as the idea of a Kickflip not scoring because it was stalled.
This is an extreme example in this context, and I see near zero risk of 0a becoming territory for this kind of thing. I LOVE having seen the wild, wacky, and downright silly ways in which players have arranged fixed axle contests over the years, from eval and crowd-centric models in state contests to the trick-off battle format of the Fixed Axle Challenge and crtieria-based peer-judging of Fixed Axle Championship Of All the World. Keep it light. Keep it fun. Keep it WIDE OPEN.
In a broader sense, my bias is keeping the competitive, acquisitive spirit that I’ve seen in yo-yo competitions OUT of 0a, but that might simply be a slow losing battle - un barrage contre la pacifique.
Their are about 14 of us trying to make a 1 minute video of fixed axle tricks. Just one take, no edits, and posting it on Instagram at end of month.
@JosephStromme is who set it up, and @cowclops is judging and Joseph is sending the winner pizza.
I can talk to Joseph if interested Ed, would be so dope to see you do a minute
It’s not National yoyo league sponsored, no trophies, and we are just jiving. Not high pressure
And if anyone was interested in competing in something official, they could hypothetically use it as dope practice. I’m personally in it for the pizza and friends
Edit: @DocPop I saw your vids, your a pretty good up and comer like ed, I could probably get you in too after some vetting lol
15 players yo. I got like 15 more seconds to figure out and then imma record.
General re: 0a comp thoughts—comp 0a is probably good for 0a if the goal is to get people playing and enjoying the style. Some people do really just like to compete and an 0a comp could help expose people to the style and maybe get them to start exploring. Just because comp 0a exists now doesn’t mean that 0a cannot also exist in a purely non competitive woo-woo space. Like 0a can be more than one thing and that is cool imo. I do see problems with that scoring system but generally I am pro comp 0a bc I like to watch it and comp helps people push each other to do more and that is cool idk it is sticky
One of the many reasons why I love this community, even though we’re all spread out we can still connect and form these bonds/relationships. It exciting to see these types of one off things happening. People pushing themselves and each other while still having fun and taking a lighter hearted approach. Maybe by the ended of 2026 I’ll have enough skills/practice under my belt to give something like this a go.
This group ranges in skill and is way more about friendship.
Example, part of my one minute will likely be walking the dog and praying I can pull it up into a stall lol
Fun with the basics, just fun in general.
As far as completions, most of them dudes are likely less concerned with winning and more about having fun and hoping it spawns more ppl into 0A (which is so stinking fun and it seems hardly anyone is giving it a shot except for like 100 ppl in the world, guessing at that number)
I saw this and I don’t know if I have a minute in me lol. I’ll try if time allows though
