The 0A Thread (Fixed Axle & Modern Responsive)

You gotta know how to create micro black holes man. It’s a whole thing :joy: You definitely need one though. It’s on a whole other level from anything I’ve played. It’s also made me better with other fixies too. I can do stuff with them that was impossible until I tried it on a gates first.

Got my first Dazzling Dave in the mail today laser etched with a design I put together (with some AI help). Plays great, might be the best playing woody that I own. Dave was amazing to work with. I will be ordering again from him in the future.

His stuff is :fire:, I always forget to mention it. Anyone looking for a very affordable wood fixie needs to hit him up. Very very good spin time for a one piece wood, which is not the easiest to pull off

This won’t come to much surprise to many that my answer is my fixie RBC called Blueberry :blueberries: which I’ve been carrying/playing pretty much everyday for almost 3 years now. It is more than an EDC, it is my companion yo-yo.:yoyo:

This journey started with the Survivalist actually, through around 2021-2022. I love wood yo-yos but I don’t trust myself to carry one around throughout the day. Between getting caught in the rain, or forgetting it’s in my pocket and laying on it, or just the harsh winters we have… I had been on a journey for a super durable, go anywhere, always ready for anything yo-yo. - I loved the size/weight/shape (though still a little sharp around the edges) of the survivalist but kept having issues with it getting snagged and taking forever to pick out.

I had had the RBC for a little bit, but found it to be a little too powerful/snappy. Then it dawned on me to try it as a fixed axle - it took a little bit to dial in the setup, but then I never looked back. It’s comfortable, durable, pocketable, reliable, consistent, take-apartable, and has replaceable response. Most recently, I switched to the ZGRT mr85 blank from my own home brew bricked bearing, and I am really enjoying the boost in performance from the string centering (it just took a bit to adjust to the slight drop in responsiveness).

The RBC is an interesting yo-yo to have a relationship with. IT IS NOT A FORGIVING YO-YO. If you are dialed in and execute a trick perfectly, it will reward you with the cleanest jams. But if you are sloppy, it will reject you and leave you out in the cold . For this reason I find it to be incredibly rewarding/fulfilling to play, despite being frustrating some days. Also, given that I have issues with chronic pain, including in my hands, I really appreciate how comfortable the RBC is to hold and play. It also doubles as a worry stone and fidget toy (thanks to its ability to pull start) that just make it the ultimate EDC (companion) for me.

I will also say the the ZGRT El Tio (fixie setup) is my second favourite EDC yo-yo, that usually sits in another pocket most days. I love how beautiful this yo-yos is. And despite having a rim, it is still quite comfortable on the catch due to a nice rounded lip. This yo-yo is so unique and plays very differently from the RBC. It is narrow, heavy, slow to flip. Overall immensely satisfying.

You could reach out to Duncan, they would likely send you a new one (probably, maybe, idk) if it’s a brand new purchase

That’s not a schmoove groove, that’s a schmoove trench lol. I hope to try some of your stuff some day :fire:

Haha, thanks! Yeah, I hope you get to try some. There’s a good variety to choose from, and I think each one has a different feel from the others.

I’m a little newer to fixie than many in this thread, but this basically runs in parallel to my journey. I got back into yoyoing during a hard time when I needed a good insomnia activity. 0A had blown up while I’d been out of the hobby, and in learning about it I got inspired by EH’s writing about restrictions and familiarity. I decided to go all in on one yoyo (or, at least, one model of yoyo.) The Butterfly was it.

I love that I’m learning tricks on the same toy that I owned as a kid. I love that everything I’m doing was theoretically possible in the very first days of yoyoing. It feels cool that I could easily buy any interested kid the very same yoyo I use. There’s effectively no barrier to entry at all. A Butterfly is a good thing.
