The 0A Thread (Fixed Axle & Modern Responsive)

Anyone have a fixie they find themselves playing the most? If so, may I ask what it is please, and what traits keep it in your hand rather than a steady even rotation of them all.

Example: Ed with No Jive. That cool dude that I can’t remember name with purple butterfly. Etc…

Haha @Jerrod !!! :purple_heart:

And yeah I def divide my attentions primarily between the NoJive and several TMBR throws. W the former, I think it’s a great yoyo but maybe primarily a combo of nostalgia and familiarity. I’ve spent SO MUCH TIME using No Jives that I have a clear sense for how they work, what they will and won’t do well in my hands, how to adjust them, etc. (BUT yeah I also just love em lol.)

I do feel like TMBR (especially the eh, but several models honestly) are the best overall PLAYERS for my personal style and approach. I just think they are beautifully crafted and ultra high-performing wooden yo-yos.

I usually play Butterfly or my own printed Pixie. The Butterfly packs a lot of punch for a $5 yoyo and I have a ton of them. I almost always carry either a Butterfly or a Pixie in my bag.

You already know, but for me, it’s Gates. OG ohm and SE are both so impossibly good! Never did I expect that I would be able to beefhook a fixie. Gates showed me it’s not only possible, but something I can get consistent. :exploding_head:

Thank you all

As far as familiarity like y’all said, for me it’s also the Duncan Butterfly.

As far as performance but I’m still getting familiar, it’s the Ardeus Dumpling.

I mention these as I like it to be able to not snag on split the atom, but still respond excellent for 0A. They both do this excellent. I assume that the TMBR, Gates and SW stuff do it even better but they are harder and pricier to obtain for me

I want an OG Ohm so so bad, what your doing with it is unreal. Spin time and lack of snag looks insane, while still responding for 0A

I’ve never had a yoyo play so intuitively! It’s so perfect. When I want it to respond, it does. When I don’t, it doesn’t! I can’t even explain it. It’s like, if I can fully surrender to the moment, the yoyo reads my mind and just does exactly what I want it to. On the other hand, if I try to control the situation, the yoyo immediately drops dead at the end of the string or snags and bites me real hard :joy: all Gates yo-yos that I’ve tried are this way. And the things they are teaching me is transferable to other yoyos, but I would’ve never known to try it, had it not been for throwing gates first.

I know that “place of mind, zen, etc ..” that you speak of. Ed lives there rent free lol (shoot, him and Drew built the house). I’ve been there but not often, goal is to stay there, and I’m sure like you said it will unlock that play in a lot of my yoyos to another level

I’m pretty new and still searching for that ideal fixie that becomes the one I almost always grab. What I gravitate towards is something that has a moderately snappy response, but also heavy enough and rim weighted enough to have plenty of spin / power. As others have said, something that responds when I want it to, but also keeps spinning when I want it to. Something that can handle 0.5A.

So far the fixies that come closest (in no particular order) are:

  • TMBR EH
  • Caveman Go
  • Gnomad
  • KNack

I’d also really like to get my hands on a Gates OG-OM. But since that’s a challenge which will likely take some time, I’ll probably just try to make my own in the meantime…

Each throw you mentioned is definitely on my list to try someday, and if you make yourself one, I’m positive it will be stunning

Play-wise, I usually grab one of my 3d-printed fixies ‘cause I really love how they play. Especially the newer ones/updated versions of the older ones. I feel that they are more optimized to suit my play style compared to all the wood fixies that I own. Otherwise, I’d be grabbing those more often. :man_shrugging:

Nothing beats the feel and smell of wood, though. My favorites are the Button, Crop Circle, and that one-off walnut TMBR will pull start caps.

Also keeping an eye out for an OG-OM :eyes:

Dude, that’s awesome looking. Does it slip off stalls very easily and cause you to have to be extra precise, or did you work some magic where it stays in stalls without slipping like your other stuff

Fyi- The stride and dumpling are blowing my mind these last few days

Anyone reading this, buy from Ardeus asap

My Strider and Stroll are some of the best I own. @Ardeus is no joke :crown:

Duncan Butterfly, cause it’s a classic, nostalgic, seems to play well, and it’s super accessible and affordable, and I like kind of representing that anyone with a few bucks can go pick one up and shred some 0A or just give 0A a try.

I haven’t played a lot of fixies. I couldn’t tell you why the Butterfly is better or worse. I lean more towards the kendama-esque, stall-heavy side of 0A. It seems to play well for that. I started using the Butterfly cause I liked the idea of using it, and then I just kept using it. Developing a deeper familiarity with it is beneficial and comforting. Then, I decided I liked the idea of just traveling down the road with one yoyo, learning it well, using what it gives me, and going where it takes me.

Also, honestly, I’m supporting a family of 5 and we’re trying to save what we can for our future. I sold all my unresponsive throws except for 3 sentimental ones and used that money to buy a bunch of Butterflies and a case to put them in. Just going all in on the Butterfly and the one yoyo idea. I only allow myself to buy things like yoyos for my birthday or Christmas, and even then, my wife, who I love and is perfect, will probably roll her eyes in a “another one, really?” kind of way, and she’s not wrong, haha.

Right now that squishy Dumpling by Ardeus or the take apart Pixie by Try Catch Throw would be at the top of my list of new ones to try. Also, I could see myself saying “nah, I’ll just keep using these Butterflies” and get something non-yoyo related that I need or want. This reply went deeper than I expected, haha, but that’s the reasons I pick up the Butterfly.

It was the perfect reply, I like to read about your passion. I’m rocking my purple one today too

Thank you for sharing such an intimate response. I think there is something to be said about using one throw, learning it inside and out and pushing it and yourself to the limits. This is what I’ve gotten from @edhaponik and his one year one yoyo explorations. With limitations comes creativity and you definitely come up with some fun cool tricks

Thank you, gentlemen. :yo-yo: :growing_heart:

Yeah, this one has schmoove grooves so it stalls pretty well despite the relatively low walls.
