I’m relatively new to this journey, but am finding that most of the better fixed axles need to be found on the BST or auction sites, unfortunately. The venerable Duncan Butterfly being one notable exception. There’s also a lot of variation in playability with wood fixies, just as anFYI. Sometimes two of the same model from the same maker can play completely differently. TMBR, Spinworthy, Wildwood, and Tom Kuhn / BC seem to be pretty consistent though. I also really like the Caveman Go from Vegabomb. The 3D printed fixies with wood axles that @Ardeus makes are very playable and a lot of fun.
I did see a TMBR pop up on the BST this morning. Not sure if it’s still available though.
Rough evening for fixed axle. Was playing the Gnomad I just got in, and snapped a string. Too lazy to grab a fresh string, I switched to a KNack. About 10 min later the KNack came apart at the axle. I think maybe I’ll switch to a Butterfly because I can’t handle the sound of any more wood bouncing off tile tonight.
Been throwing mostly newer Butterflys lately. Got an Unknown about a week ago. When I first got it I noticed the gap was huge so I pushed the 2 halves together. Yesterday it popped apart. One side just wants to pop right off. Any suggestions on the type of glue I should use in the axle hole to keep this from happening?
I know a lot of people are going to have a lot of different opinions on this, haha, but I’ve had some Gorilla Clear All Purpose that has worked really well for me at least. It’s a no-foam solution as well so it doesn’t expand. As usual, a little goes a long way.
I have a couple. If you look at the axles from the side I like the ones with smaller axles more but Rich will also do custom work. You can message him and request a smaller axle, specific wood, etc.
Yeah I have been supporting @Rich and his shop for a while and have one of each shapes he has and some older models.
the unique woods he’s been doing are very cool. The older bearing models need grease and sometimes a double wrap to play well and the large axle fixed axle can be a bit sluggish in play but the newer winged small axle are really getting into that sweet spot especially the 60g ones. They usually are a tad heavier which can lead to slipping if you don’t double loop or use some thick lube but the lighter ones are fantastic. every model and make has been an evolution and I’m hoping he gets into a more rounded winged shape in the near ish future. In the mean time they are fairly affordable compared to searching for older stuff on eBay and rich is very responsive and nice so don’t hesitate to reach out to him.
Had a blue and yellow Pro Z about a decade ago. Never really played it without using the mod spacers. It never really moved with me so it eventually went to Goodwill. Recently picked up a Scout pack so I could give the strings, XD and book to a friend who wants to get into throwing. I really wanted to try the Eagle 1 (really wish Duncan would sell these by themselves). Felt a bit sloppy/cheap with the transaxle. I had some spacers and a bolt in my parts stash so I put a lubed up bearing in it. A bit light but plays pretty well. Nice pocket/slimline 0A throw. Might try putting some o rings in it to bulk it up a bit.
