Show some wooden yoyos you've made

Gorgeous! That’s the kill-you-from-the-inside wood, yes?

oooh the grain on that wenge is so nice though!

And what type of wood is the bottom left one in this picture? Love the look of that one!

That’s the one. I wouldn’t take take a whiff of it without a respirator on. It looks and smells something like chocolate when you are turning it, but it produces a very fine dust that when breathed gives an enormous headache.

It also splinters very easily and the splinters cause infection almost straight away. There are also reports of people getting a kind of blood disease from it.

Have no fear though. It’s perfectly safe to throw as a yoyo.

That one is tiger oak that was grown locally. Super nice, but very gnarly. It’s hard to find decent parts of the board of It I have to cut yoyo halves from.

Beautiful grain, very aptly named with that tiger-y look.

I made this yoyo as a gift for the first person ever to buy one of my yoyos. I made it from photinia wood from the backyard of my childhood home, so it has some sentimental significance to me. As do you @French. Thank you for being the first person to take a risk by purchasing one of my handmade yoyos. Your encouragement by doing so helped give me the confidence to continue.

The pictures below are first yoyo I bought from @Glenacius_K. If memory serves me correctly, this is the yoyo I used for fixed axle at the New York YoYo Club’s first one throw event. I also seem to remember a few guys borrowing it for their fixed axle freestyle.

Thank you Glenn. I am at a loss for words beyond thank you!

Are the White Oak Ballsy, and Wenge Boon for me!?!?

If the Boon’s not, I’ll pay extra to make it mine!

They should be! You’ve got the biggest Spinworthy collection in the US I’d bet!

I don’t know, but I’m close to having more SWs than any other maker! Different yoyos at least, I’ve got whole boxes of 3-in-1s and YYFs.

Couple of dud Survivalists as Glen mentioned, have lowered my count. Maybe I’ll send them back, and see if he can put Cabal guts in them!

The white oak Ballsy I made was really nice, but not as smooth as I would have liked, So I will be remaking it from a different board of white oak. Yes, it was intended for you.

The wenge Boon was fot someone else, but I’ll happily make your Boon out of wenge if you like.

I think also @gcoomans has a pretty big Spinworthy collection also, even one of a kind single piece yoyo I made called the Onesy. I think he’s traded away a number of them though, So You may actually have the largest Spinworthy collection.

I’ve only given away one of my harbingers, the rest are used on a weekly basis! I’ve gotta try a boon in the future!

I’ll get some pics up tomorrow when I’m not at work!!

Gosh, I’ve come a long way in my knowledge and skill since that yoyo! I believe that one had a 6mm oak axle and response recesses that were too shallow, but it still seemed to perform OK.

I used a router back then to make my yoyos, rather than a lathe.

I’m curious, do you use any sort of finish on your yo-yos? Tung oil? Wax? Or do you just keep them raw?

I have used a few things before. I used to use a beeswax based product, then I changed to just using mineral oil.

Now I use a woodwipe made from tung and citrus oils. I’m happiest with that one because it is the most natural.

More natural than bee’s wax?

Edit: noticed ou wrote beeswax-based. My bad. Think beeswax straight would work? Have a bunch laying around.

I’ve noticed that wood workers usually combine the beeswax with something else before using it on wood. I’m guessing that it wouldn’t penetrate properly on its own.
