I honestly thought the memes posted would have been a little more insulting considering my reputation of sayimg I’m going to do something, tben not doing (usually always because of factors beyond my control).
I’ve never had the pleasure of using one of your yo-yos, but seemingly, they are worth waiting for.
(I’m hoping to snag a SWFL, but $100+ is kind of a lot of money for a 15 year old kid, nothing personal)
I get it. There is always birthday and Christmas money.
$110 is not a lot to pay for the one of, if not best organic yoyo you’ve played.
These are all valid points… except>
I have 12 siblings, which is great! Except “Birthday + Christmas Money” totals to like $50 because of well, 12 other Birthdays, and Christmas presents for like 18 people, which I’d take family over vanity any day of the week, but as a result!..
I don’t see myself able to procure a SWFL… Willing! But not able. If something magical happens, I’ll be in line to snag one, and that’s a guarantee.
From my personal experience, it will make your twenties even more magical when you have steady income and can go on the BST to get those childhood favorites. Maildays will feel like Christmas.
I’ll see if I can sort something out for you when the run arrives.
Wow, you’re too kind man, I’d seriously appreciate that.
Funny enough, I’ve been working on inventing this trick for way too long, and before I even heard of your yo-yo, I chose to name the trick “Flying Lemon,” I’ll finish the trick up and see if I can snap it on film.
Took a bit longer than we expected but we finished up several more yoyos and I’m blown away by how these turned out! I helped with design, sanding and finishing, and my Dad did a masterful job with the turning of these. Thanks for building them with me Dad! I still can’t get over how pretty the two tone (Hickory and Bolivian Rosewood) yoyo turned out
Woods Used:
- Bolivian Rosewood
- Black Walnut
- Hickory
Yo-Yos Successfully Turned: 6
Yo-Yos Lost: 1 (RIP)
Axles Broken: 1
Glue Joints Broken: 1
That’s some killer work, beauties right there, and what a fun experience and memory!
The dark stained wood is beautiful!
I failed both Bloodcells. The upside is I thought of a new method for turning wooden unresponsives.
I’ve turned one half and will make the other tomorrow.
These look stunning! Nice work. What did you finish these with?
Thanks y’all, glad you enjoyed the yoyos! Definitely some great memories!
@Eric_Newlin These are the finishes we used in order from left to right on all the yoyos
I love learning more about other people‘s processes. Do you apply those while it’s on the lathe?
Also, were these turned from a single piece or did you guys turn each half separately and then assemble?
@Eric_Newlin We did apply all the finish while it was on the lathe. Just filmed an example of that from start to finish since we found a way to save at least one of the two yoyos that flopped this week. I’ll post that vid here once I edit it down. Trying to save the last one if at all possible but we’ll see
We turned them from single pieces where possible, and when our wood wasn’t thick enough, we cut boards and glued them together to make them thicker and added a dowel on the inside to make a linear axle so that we could turn them as if they were one piece. This quick vid from my instagram shows what the whole thing looked like in one giant piece of a bunch of wood
Dude! These look fantastic!
I’m curious how much they weigh and how they play, if you find the time.
Thanks @Yodaddyo ! They all play pretty different and I forgot to do final measurements on them but I’ll go off memory for their approximate measurements.
The slim v ish shaped walnut yoyos are the lightest and smallest at around 54 mm in diameter and ~35 mm wide, weighing around 39 grams. They’re super light but fun for modern responsive stall tricks. They are way to light to control for looping style tricks though.
The super slim rosewood yoyos are the most solid, especially since the rosewood is the heaviest wood w used. It’s very solid and despite being like 30 mm wide if that and around 56 mm in diameter they still weigh like 53-55 grams. Super fun and spin quite well for being fixed axle yoyos. These were initially intended to be loopers but would have been too heavy if we did the rounded out shape on the outside rather than the caved in shape. Overall super happy with these.
The walnut with the bump/spike in the cup is around 46 mm wide and 56 mm in diameter at about 55ish grams. It’s really big compared to the others but still fun! Comfy in the hand because it’s so organic. Honestly super surprised we saved this one because we thought it was a lost cause ngl.
The two toned yoyo is around 56mm in diameter and 44-45 mm in width weighing like 47-48 grams? Because of how we did the axle it’s pretty off balance but it’s still playable despite the wobble and it’s just too pretty to scrap. It plays decently despite the wobble and being pretty light for its shape. That said it’s more of a looker than a player. This one was inspired by the CLYW Boy, Swan, and Offset Galactus but mostly from the Boy.
Hope that helps! I recorded a ton of the process and plan to make a video of it but it’s gonna take a while since I have like 100+ clips to go through but I’ll post it in the coming months once I finally finish it!
Awesome! Thank you for taking the time. They look really great, and I love that it’s a father/son project. I can’t wait to see what else you guys cook up.
Heck yeah! I look forward to it.
These look
Fantastic.
Sorry dude, I’ll finish up the trick in a few days, I’m super sick right now.
