Fixed Axle Friday Throws

Reading this thread makes me want to get some wood. Hard.

Yeah I agree with @AaronW - Fidalgo shouldn’t be unresponsive, try changing out the pads or use a thicker string. The great thing about a metal fixie is you can use just about any string and different thickness pads to adjust the response level. I would try it out with something like string lab AMMO or Kitty XL to see if that helps, if not then try some fresh pads or even flowable silicone.

That post was premature, I had thrown the thing for about 1 minute, with literally the cheapest :poop: string you could imagine (most have been off of an old yomega or some freebie) It plays great with any other string on it. I’m still leaving it on the BST though and going to eBay later this week. I scored it with a lot of TMBR and only really wanted the TMBR’s. Was pleasantly surprised/impressed by the Big Dipper that came along also, that one I’m keeping. All-in-all I think this is a mighty fine throw just not my cup…

That’s how I felt about it as well. Cool, unique, great playing, but wasn’t for me. As a fixed axle something just wasn’t right with it, probably the metal body and axle.

Today I grabbed this BC What’s Next Tom Kuhn No Jive 3 and 1, not an original SF, but still a mid-nineties classic. Playing is set up in the Standard configuration because Imperial is a trade mark of Duncan. Enjoying some high walls, this version is slightly bigger in diameter than the originals. @DocPop said it in his latest PopCast the cool thing about the modern responsive trick movement is that these tricks could have been years ago, they just hadn’t been discovered yet, expect by @edhaponik and @drewtetz. So old dogs can learn new tricks after all.

The TMBR Carlson CS is what a wooden fixed axle Duncan Freehand would be.

Can someone please recommend me a good wood fixed acle yoyo? This is something missing from my life and I know it is something I would really get into. Thanks!

Anything TMBR is nice.

OUT makes good stuff also, although I’m 2 for 2 on OUT’s snapping from accidentally letting it hit the ground during play

The All Maple Currier is a solid EDC player and still available at YYE

I just recommended the Hildy Brothers all maple Currier as a great all around fixed axle because I have one and it is just a great classic simple wooden toy. If you do need some more flare in your life, they have them with inlays with other woods or used skateboards and even painted options. However, the all maple is just super clean and simple making it feel timeless. I treat mine as an every day type of EDC and it has a nice patina on the wings from the oils and dirt off of my hands, mixed with the dings from everyday life. I keep this one separate from the rest of the collection and off the shelf as it sits on my dresser, so it gets thrown everyday even if its just for a minute or two. It definitely has it’s own distinct feel, I want to call it soft to the catch as I have no other way to describe it. It may not be the longest spinner, or the most unique, or have a vintage sentimental place in my heart (maybe it will in several years), but when I think of a simple good classic wooden yoyo this one checks all of those boxes and is fun player.

I can’t really recommend anything, but I can say that I recently reacquainted myself a wood fixed axle, and it was something missing from my life.
(I like my Legend Wing, but lack experience with others to recommend it. It plays much better than I remember the last one, but that was thirty years ago.)

Got my first fixed axle today, it’s a Fallen 44, and it’s a delight! Thanks again @shatterFX.

I’ll second and third the Hildy Currier. One of my all time favorites! I’ve got the original maple, then an updated take-a-part maple, and an oak. I’d highly suggest one of the new take apart maples. Luke makes an amazing yoyo and the ability to take it apart now made it even better!

What axle does one of those have? Can you unscrew it?

I believe it’s glued in, and from what I can see it appears to be maple.

Getting acquainted with one of the classics today.

I broke one of my Spinworthy the other day working on Lunar Landing. Decided to practice on my Legend Wing until I get it down. Surprised me how consistantly I am shooting the moon with it.

So spirit bombs are tough on these things, apparently. Literally all I’ve tried to to with it since I got it. One of these days.
