YYF Ricochet

^ Okay, now that everyone has spoken on that stuff. If there is a YoyoExpert 4th of July sale tomorrow, that lets us get at least 20% off major purchases…you might be able to get that Ricochet for $160. I’m just saying, that if you are going to buy one, now might be the time to do it…well tomorrow that is. I mean, there is no blue in stock, but raw looks better after you spark it I’m sure. So, everyone tomorrow…buy a Ricochet, and let’s see how many sell out. I might be able to afford it this week, but it depends on the percentage off during the sale. Imagine, if you could get your first all titanium throw for $160. Would that be unprecedented? It might happen tomorrow…but it depends. I have faith…

I don’t know why you’re all so hung up on him cutting one in half. Its not like he doesn’t have the CAD file handy, its as simple as him posting a picture.

That would work as well.

That presumes that he wants you to see his CAD photo. And, he will sell all 500 of those Ricochets without the effort, so he has nothing to gain from it. Same result. I think yo-yo manufacturers should never show the public their CAD photos. You have reviews, Youtube, word of mouth, and the guy who makes the thing in here willing to chat with you about it. That’s sufficient in my eyes. I’m going to ask KFC for the recipe for that fried chicken, but…they might tell me to go shove it. And, if they did, I would have asked for it.

But if there is 20% off here tomorrow, or even 15%…this might make the cut. The more time I spend in here, the more I want one of these. Hmmm… even at 15% off makes this $170. It might be cheaper than a Berserker tomorrow. The time is now!

While I respect your opinion it is just that… your opinion. You are not the entire community any more than I am. There are people asking for it. Instead of saying that he does not have a spare to cut up he instead wished harm on those who requested it. That is some great customer relations right there.

lol this thread, sometimes it’s easy to forget these are toys ultimately that we’re arguing over. That said i’d rather have seen YYF do something unique with titanium and with a $300+ price tag than something pretty basic for $200. Exposed axle, Made in China labeling, basic shape, small size, didn’t do much for me. Sometimes it’s worth smaller margins or direct selling to release a halo product. A Malaysian yoyo store had Ricochets on sale for $145 last week but i still didn’t bite at that price, i’m sure it would have been fun, and i kind of wish i’d grabbed one, but ended up buying some other throws instead. I paid $300 for a Ti5, but didn’t pay half that for a Ricochet, and that has everything to do with the design being less compelling to me. It just ended up in a weird in-between segment where it’s still too expensive for your average kid to buy, but not unique enough to appeal to those who typically pay big money for high-end yoyos. With YYF’s resources i’d expect them to release something truly revolutionary that benefitted from their scale and supply chain, just not sure this release did it for me.

As far as the whole cutting one up argument? Please stop, that’s just so silly. I really doubt there’s anything hiding inside the Ricochet that isn’t obvious from outward appearances, and honestly you two probably haven’t bought a YYF yoyo in years, so stop acting like you’d buy this one if only you saw the profile.

I respect your opinion too, and you are right, you are not the entire community. But, while we both shared our opinions, ultimately it will be a fact whether or not he will sell all 500 of those Ricochets without posting the photo that you guys requested. I have asked for a ton of things in life, and many of them, I have not gotten, but…life goes on. I think he has made the wise business decision.

As far as him wishing harm on people, I think the internet does not provide you the means to always tell when someone is being humorous or sarcastic, or whether a statement is to be taken literally or not. But, I haven’t seen any mug shots of him around lately, and we’re talking yo-yos on a yo-yo forum after all :-\ so my best guess was that he was being humorous about turning down the request. I think some would have ignored the request altogether, and at least he responded. Actually, I have a good report about his customer service, if you’d like to hear it. It would send things off topic though, so I’ll hold that thought for now.

I think NathanC got my point exactly. YYF is appealing to people in the middle, not the ones who want a CAD photo and looking for this revolutionary design stuff, and not the kids who buy really cheap yo-yos either. Everyone else has done the $300 to $500 Ti thing. Another reasonably priced Ti is no longer in production. So, YYF offers a cheaper, affordable Ti, not currently on the market, and made 500 so everyone who wants it can try it, and then gives us a color option, and a classic shape to appeal to a lot of people and…presto. Brilliant! Ben said in the future, if this Ti gets positive response, they are looking to take the next design to another level. Like all YYF models so far, there is something to appeal to almost everyone. Same with other yo-yos, some models appeal to us…some not. Same with titanium though. This does not have to be the only YYF titanium to ever be made, as Ben stated there may be others down the road. He can make history later if he wants to, there is not rush.

Best post in this thread.

So back on topic guys. Am I the only one who thinks that the Raws profile shot is beautiful? I don’t know why it just looks great to me.

I agree. It’s past midnight…any sign of a sale yet? I can’t wait. ;D It’s July 4th…EST anyway.

Wow… Unbelievable how much time you all wasted while you could have been throwing.

Basically agree with everything said above.

Though one “extra” that the Ricochet does have, that most Ti yoyos don’t, is it comes anodized, at least the blue one does. Considering how expensive most Ti throws are , I’d like to see more companies go that one extra step and anodize them.

Actually, I consider anodized titanium a turn off… and honestly this has nothing to do with THIS yoyo or YYF. Raw titanium is a beautiful metal that looks stunning when polished to a mirror shine. Also, an anodized titanium yoyo will show all the damage from a good sparking. I have sparked a raw titanium before and we just polished it up with some Mother’s Polish. You could hardly tell the damage. There is nothing to easily add the color back once you spark it off.

Hey! Just as I suspected. You can get a titanium for $159 right now on YoyoExpert. That is the cheapest titanium ever, at this sale price…20% off. Does anyone know if this is the biggest YYE sale of the year, or is there another one later this year? My memory of last year was that July 4th was the biggest of all.

I agree with Saintrobyn on the anodizing. It looks pretty, but I prefer raw for a few reasons. I prefer most things natural, if they are available that way. My guitars don’t have paint on them, just natural wood. But, I know some people love color, so I guess options are cool. I have a raw one on the way. I’ll post the number when I get it. I asked for an even number  We’ll see what’s available, but with the holiday, I won’t see it until early next week.

Titanium allows for way cooler anodizations, you can’t get that blue/purple on an aluminium throw.
The ricochet was designed with sparking in mind so only the very outer edge of the rim gets sparked, not much damage is done at all to the yoyo.

^ I didn’t realize that blue/purple could only be achieved on titanium. That’s pretty cool, if that’s the case.

If I remember correctly, YYE has a pretty darn good Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale in late November. I do believe the discounts are as good, if not better, than this sale. The one down side is that if you roll the dice and decide to wait there is no guarantee that the yoyo you want now will be in stock later on in the year.

Yes but then the outer edge has the raw titanium showing through. Looks like it has a serious case of road rash, at least that is what the pic on page 3 looks like to me. I am sure it feels smooth to the touch but aesthetic screams “beat to heck”.

You are correct on the colors though. Titanium can pull so vibrant colors due to how it is anodized. It is all done with electric current instead of dyes. Jason Wong did some amazing work with titanium.

Just make an anodized titanium yoyo with polished/raw rims. Best of both worlds.

In theory that would make for a great looking yo-yo but I don’t know if it could be done without going back and polishing off the ano on the rims of each half, which would end up being a laborious chore. To anodize titanium you actually pass a current of electricity through the metal, the color is determined by the voltage used during the process. It is actually a seriously cool process, especially if you are a science nut. You can watch the color change as the voltage is increased. While cool to watch the down side is that I don’t think masking is a possibility since you are only applying current instead of adding dye to the metal like you do in standard aluminum anodizing.
