I think the quintessential YYR would have to be the Sleipnir. It’s been their best seller and for the longest time almost every YYR sponsored player without a signature model was using it. That said though, recently YYR have switched gears a bit with bi-metals like the Draupnir and Laser. I think there’s also a new Sleipnir due out soon so it’ll be interesting to see what updates they’ve made to that (bi-metal perhaps?).
If you can find a Sleipnir, I think it ought to be a staple in any YYR collection. If not, I’d take the Draupnir which is far easier to find and YYR are slowly introducing new colours. The gold Attuned Draupnir (slightly wider gap than vanilla Draupnir) looks especially sick.
Just got an Attune and a Re-Clash. Both are absolutely fantastic. I also got to try a Blink and a Mr. Butcher at MA states, and wow, they’re both really good.
You played a fragment too haha! Was awesome meeting you Sean. I was kinda upset I didn’t get to try a draupnir at MA states…hopefully at NER someone will have one.
Okay how do you know that? I’m aware Tachibana uses it in 3A competitions but that’s all I know. Did YYR say somewhere Laser was designed for 3A? Or do they just show Tachibana’s video because it’s the highest anyone has placed with a Laser in a major competition? Its specs are similar to a lot of 5A throws though. Maybe the requirements for 3A and 5A are similar. I’m just guessing, I know very little about 3A.
I’ve tried asking YYR directly but they haven’t responded yet. They did tell me six or seven weeks ago that anodized Lasers would hit the market in the “not too distant future,” whatever that means. I’m guessing they release them within a month or two, but who knows really…
I don’t think it was designed for anything specific. It’s just that the first person to really compete with it on team YYR was a 3A player, leading players to believe it was designed for 3A. I think it would be great for both 3A and 5A since they have somewhat close preferences.

the laser is a 3A yoyo (as the clash and triplet), for this reason it is tight.
models designed specifically for the 5A are the mr. Butcher and the Z-on which the measurement pads increased.
having said that, with every yoyo you can still play in every style.
I agree. Sometimes I find I prefer the Sleipnir’s “feel”; both in the hand and and on the string. It is such a perfect yoyo. But the Draupnir is just… you said it better.
Haha, close enough, they’re all the same to me since i don’t play anything other than 1A. Doesn’t matter anyway. Worrying about what a yoyo was designed for before getting it is silly. The Laser is a fabulous yoyo for 1A, and therefore should be great at 3A and 5A as well. 2A and 4A with it could be tricky though. :o
This is pretty awkward, I’ve owned tons of high-end throws, but it feels like the Draupnir is on an even higher level than what I’ve played this far.
It’s like I found a “magic” yoyo, I land almost all my tricks with a higher ratio of success than usual. Maybe it’s a placebo effect, as it’s the first metll yoyo I’ve thrown this year. It would be awesome if YYR made a pink version of it.
Not silly to me, when it costs $200. I already have two top-notch 1A throws. And I’ve used random yoyos for 5A and for me the weight and dimensions make a big difference as to the difficulty of certain tricks. You can’t just assume the best 1A throws are the best 5A throws. I’m pretty sure they aren’t. I mean I’m sure any $200 yoyo is at least adequate for 5A but some will be better than others and when you’re spending a lot of money why not research it first?
Though I haven’t tried my Draupnir with the dice…afraid to ding it up. Hmm…maybe I’ll put a monkey ball on there and try it out, but I think the tight binds might be an issue. Nobody uses the Draupnir for 5A in competitions as far as I know so it’s probably not great
What people use in competitions for a certain style means nothing. See, this whole thing you’re worried about here doesn’t even exist. Any of their yoyos would be adequate for 5a just as they are for 1a. What it comes down to is what feels good for YOU for each style. What’s good at 5a for Samm Scott doesn’t mean it’s the best for you to use. The yoyos they produce specifically for one style is only because that is what a certain player likes to use for said style. It is not a be all, end all discussion.
And what did you think? I seem to be the only one who actually prefers it to the draupnir (who has played both), and finds it more stable. I would be surprised if anyone thought it felt less comfortable in the hand.
