The word, ain’t, was once acceptable and used by upper classes as a contraction of am not. When the lower classes started using it the upper classes ditched it and it became considered poor grammar.

Can confirm. NJ resident myself, and saying coffee the “proper” way just sounds awkward for me. The NY accent of it is stronger though.
Ive seen this too. Sellout Americans just trying to appeal to Brits who tell us we spell things wrong. American’s should have pride in their regional spellings imo.
