Necro! I love this thread.
Not wood, but finally got this one with my old Butterfly:
Speaking of wood, I happen to have some wooden throws. An FAO Schwarz fixed-string yo-yo, the wooden yo-yo from David Cain’s The Yo-Yo Book, and most recently, a late-1990s No Jive 3-in-1 that I got for Christmas.
Speaking of the No Jive, one of its body halves is a bit crooked on one side because one of the hex nuts won’t go in the whole way. It’s a tiny bit off on one side. Plus, I tried but couldn’t get it into the butterfly shape.
I just received two Duncan “Beginner” yoyo’s (circa 1950’s). One has the original fixed string and the other has been replaced.
I have recently been playing wooden fixed axle yoyos.
It has given me a much needed boost of enthusiasm and motivation for the hobby and I have barely touched my bearing yoyos since.
I wish I began fixed axle play years ago.
Wood is most definitely good.
If you haven’t already, this is a really cool thread. I sat over the course of a few days and read it all. Lots of good tips, and just an overall great read
I’m thinking about competing at Indonesia Nats this year with wooden fixies.
If you do: Best of luck to you!
I will post the video here once it’s done.
Indonesia nats will be in the end of next week.
For all you fixed axle enthusiasts - We just got in some Extra Long Type 10 Cotton!
YES!!!
Extra long😲? Am I the only one who usually plays fixed axles with the loop at belly button height? Am I just short compared to everyone else? What kind of crazy tricks are you guys doing to need that much string?
I also keep it belly button height, I don’t need it that long. It’s not like I need it for tech. I also find thelat length to help with control.
I do as well, though I’ve been told by a number of people to shorten it up for looping style tricks.
I’m 6’5", so standard cotton string is a little short for me. I’ve just always made due. Love the Toxic Lacer strings, can make my own length.
So these new longer ones I’m excited about. I actually contact the company earlier this year about making some for me, but the quantity was going to be way more than what was realistic to buy.
As far as tricks, I’ve been playing with some slack and hook tricks on fixed axle lately, and standard string is just way too short for me with what I’m trying.
I favor belly button high for all of my throws.
me too. I’m not complex enough to be able to deal with different length string on fixed axle vs. bearing
I keep my string at belly button length for 1a fixed axle, and bottom of my jeans pocket length for 2a. I find belly button length to be a real hindrance for looping. But everyone’s different.
With looping it comes down to the gap you like. Since gap and string length combine to determine if the yoyo loops up or down, deciding you have a preference for either basically dictates what you need to use for the other. I prefer shorter quicker loops, which translates to a shorter string, which in turn dictates a narrower gap. The narrower gap and shorter string balance each other. If you need a longer string, you may need to shim your gap to get the loop shape you want.
Yes. I prefer long lazy loops so I shim most of my no-jives. MY BC yoyos seem to play ok as is. On a short string the loops are too quick for me.
Shorter strings with 100% cotton will provide additional control (particularly with lighter throws) / on the BC’s which are heavier a long string works well for basic loops / Plastic yo-yos with a wooden soul are also great for looping
