Wood is Good

Luke Renner - how do you like the Kalmer Trissan? I assume you do by the number you have. I’ve never been able to get them to play very good. Probably need to mess w/string length.

You are not the only one who has problems using them. I use the Kalmer Trissans to practice keeping the yo-yo in the correct angle for loops. They are very unforgiving if you throw sloppy loops. I would note that there are two different gap sizes on the Trissans if you mix a wide gap with a narrow gap it is cause for major looping problems.

I was fortunate to have a Tissans stockpile given to me after my yo-yo show by a collector who appreciated seeing a mix of fixed axle and non-responsive tricks. There was also a demonstrator who worked with Barney Akers at the same show and the three of us spent a long time after the show trading tricks, yo-yos and stories.

I primarily throw Jack Russells for looping tricks. These are the yo-yos used by my mentor Dale Myrberg for looping. I used 1996 Jack Russells at the 2015 National Contest because of Dale and incorporated a few tricks learned from the other three US National Grand Masters. Dale used Russells to win the 1994 US National Contest and the open division in the 1996 World Contest.

Cool that you used wood to compete! Doesn’t it limit certain stuff like wrap tricks? Maybe I’m wrong, I’m not exactly a 3a player😐

Wraps were not happening in the contest. It would be extremely difficult to win against bearings unless you had an amazing flawless routine. The current 2a players are excellent and fixed is much slower paced. However, it was good to reach my goal. I wanted to always to compete in a big contest using it fixed axles it just took over twenty years.
