Wood is Good

^what he said… The NoJive i got took quite a bit of tuning to get it smooth. One thing i noticed is that the nuts weren’t level … it’s like the holes for them were machined very tight so the first time theywere put in they scraped away some of the wood and it ended up under the nut… after scraping that away the nuts were flush.

Also don’t over tighten it… it doesn’t take much to warp/crack an axle.

For all those who (like me) are drooooling over YoyoSpin’s beautiful handcrafted yoyos in this thread, don’t forget that the Fixed Axle February 2014 video contest has three (yes, 3!!!) up for grabs:

Great article Ed ;D

such a good read!  Some great history and tricks!  Love the vid from the first nationals.

awesome article… ive been watching some dennis mcbride videos recently… what these guys did with fixed axle yoyo’s is beyond amazing. I’m very interested in these “old school” tricks on a fixed axle at the moment.

Who doesn’t want to be the guy at the yoyo meet… yeah i see your superman… but how about a pinwheel, into a split the atom, roll out and loop it back… but on a fixed axle.

The article was great. I reminded me of the only yoyo contest I ever entered ( I did poorly). And that was before the film was made.

I forgot to post in this thread the other day, but YYE has restocked:

Or, you could just try to win some by entering this nifty little contest:

hey! I was wondering where you went fellow texan. xP If you still mod and make the throws that’s shway!

Pictures of my wood ;D

Is anyone elses Lasering off center on their No Jive Optic Star like mine is? (look at the bottom edge in this particular picture)

My Optic Star is right on, but one need not look far to find a TK with off-center art.
Actually the most egregious tend to be the foil-stamped painted ones from the early 00’s. Maybe that’s why I like Clean Machines so much!

That answers my question. ;D

Thanks for the key words Ed … “Clean Machine” came up on Etsy … there’s TK stuff on there that isn’t available on the main website ;D.

yeah those are a steal.

I’m officially getting a turner in a trade- hopefully in a few months I can join in with the convorsations in this thread.

Newly modded TK stuff…enjoy.

OUT yoyos are so nice, I need one really bad

I’ve been playing predominantly Wooden yoyo’s for a few months now. The past few weeks I’ve even started to completely ignore anything with a bearing. As with anything the more I submerge myself into something I end up thinking how i got “here” and what’s next.

Playing wood yoyo’s reminds me of riding a long board, playing tennis with my wood racquet, painball with 21ies and pump gun, playing a P-Bass thru a B-15 or even better an Upright Bass, shaving with an old school Merkur double edge safety razor using a brush and shave soap like grandpa did.

I seem to gravitate towards doing stuff oldschool at some point. Probably comes from my own expierence about wanting to understand the history and skill required to use “old technology”. That knowledge gives me a while different perspective and respect for what i’m doing.

I am sitting here looking at my Tom Kuhn Wood Rocks and No Jive 3-in-1 … realizing that each of these yoyo’s represent completely different decades of yoyo technology.

Wood Rocks = something that my grandpa or great-grandpa would have played with
No Jive = something my dad would have played with

It will be a while before i throw another yoyo that doesn’t at least have a wooden axle. There’s so much to learn and explore as a fixed axle noob. There simply isn’t time to use anything else.

Giving this one more spamtastic plug. There have been updates and prize announcements and super cool stuff and things happening. Check out the recent photos posted for a visual treat that will start your wallet drooling.

People sometimes send me crappy old wood yo-yos, hoping they can be made new again. Here’s the latest batch to come in the door…

I have this handmade wooden fixed axle, but I think I broke it… It looked like it could be untwisted and it couldnt… Haha. Yeah i felt really bad breaking it. I was dumb. Anyway the only problem with it is that the axle is too thin to fit into the bigger “axle hole” i made when I untwisted it… I really want to put it to good use, because it is really pretty and it did play good (i think). I want to send it to someone who can maybe make a thicker axle or something? You can keep it afterwards- I just want it to have a good home and be used. Anyway if you want it if you paypal me 4$ for shipping I’ll send it to a good home. I just thought maybe soneone would be interested.

Was wondering about anyone’s opinions on how the Radical Seas wood plays compared to some of the others, like from TMBR or OUT. I saw it at PNWR, but I don’t really have the experience with newer wood fixies to have a solid opinion. I’m curious about looping, vs string tricks, stalls, etc. if anyone has any input.
