Wood is Good

Why thank you sir!!

@Yonut Try pliers, be sure to protect the wood with a T-shirt and twist it back and forth while pulling. Also keep the metal axle in so you dont split the wood, and above all else be gentle and treat it like a lady.

Thanks.

I only recently started using 100% cotton string on my fixed axle yo-yos. I’ve been throwing this yo-yo pretty much exclusively for the last couple weeks. (it’s fantastic by the way).

I’ve had two strings break in that time. Both broke where the loop intersects the string around my finger, not at the axle. Is this normal with 100% cotton string?

I’ve had two cottons break so far, the one that came with my Eh, and one from a YYE bundle. Both broke at the bottom where it wraps around the axle. Granted, thats a pretty small subject test, and might be from different throw styles.

In my experience, yes. I’d say 99% ofr my string breaks are there. Rarely at the axle. And I’ve had similar experience with slick 8.

Ok so I’m finding some weird stuff is going on my how the Eh is handling string tricks: it’s doing mysteriously well.

As a back story, I’ve been trying to land Spirit Bomb on a fixie. Despite the fact that I can land it quite easily on my metal yoyos, the fixie adventure is frustrating and a different story completely. It’s not going well at all. I can’t get beyond the first arm cross before the yoyo runs out of steam or snags and snaps against my wrists. I’m getting pretty angry about it. I’m proud of my wood collection and I’ve tried many yoyos, all of which die the same agonized death. Now granted, all of these yoyos are brand new, and more than likely, not broken in yet. I’ve been gathering yoyos, but frankly this holiday has been too busy to play longer than 20 minutes a day. The Eh is also brand new, however, I’ve hit Spirit Bomb several times on it including the very first out of the box throw. What gives? Is there some simple design detail that would cause this almost eerily paranormal phenomenon? If that string has anything to do with it, Imma need hundreds of em.

Nice! Spirit Bomb certainly seems like a fixed axle 1A benchmark. I still can’t get beyond the first pop, but I haven’t tried that much yet either. Still rocking the double-loop around the axle and focusing on being comfortable with lots of response via stalls and regens and finally learning to loop.

Thats great to hear!!! I have been able to land some tricks I thought were not possible too. The Eh is really something!!!

My new fixed axle video… featuring the lovejoy

Nice video, Robbie. Glad you’re putting the Lovejoy through its paces.

Super nice.

That was Awesome for sure!!! Happy Fixed Friday everyone!!!

Lets get this party rocking.

First up, lets talk about our favorite wooden axle butterfly.

Mine is the either my Mandala No-Jive or the Eh. Sometimes I think the Eh gives loose binds so I’ll have to sticker it, but the Mandala pattern gives tight binds every time.

Second, lets talk about our favorite imperial loopers.

Mine is any one of my Hummingbird Tricksters. I have three of them and think they are the bees knees. I also started throwing my BC Spitfire today and it’s no slouch. I may prefer it to my Duncan Tournament Jeweled. Though the Duncan isn’t a fantastic looper, I did sharpie a silver lighting bolt on the back to make it go faster. I also double loop all my looper strings so I don’t have to fuss with sleeping. It might be cheating and I’ve most certainly almost hit myself in the face this way, but that’s hardcore, bro. Hardcore.

And finally, can we talk about where to find good cotton spools for yoyo string? All the ones I find are treated in some way to make a satin appearance or shiny and I’m a fan of neither.

Go!

Ok

butterfly: Tmbr Baldwin, this thing can do anything you throw at it.

imperial: BC Lightning, great weight, great player. In fact, I just bought 3 more of these.

This is more of a curiosity on my part, where better to ask about wooden yoyos?

People bring up throwing a friction sticker into the yoyo to make it have tighter response, but has anyone tried siliconing one of those divots instead?

As in, one of those four small parts?

favorites, probably a no-jive for both counts.
at least as far as smoothness and predictability. the
tricksters are probably better for the old style looping tricks, but
i can’t loop 30 or 40 times in a row, so…
for butterfly shape, it really depends on what you are trying to do with it, because if you are doing really complex tricks, the newer styles are less responsive and heavier, but for all around play, the no-jives are
the best of what i look at as a traditional wood yoyo. the old hummingbirds and bc yoyos are great, but they are really hard to get
set up, and then they wear out.

My fav butterfly is my Eh by far… I love it…

Looper would be my original No-Jive. For some reason its one of few yoyos I can actually loop with!!

As for string I have no idea. I am still working off a bunch of string I got with Tom Kuhn orders back in the early 1990’s!!!..
