Why do you own duplicates of the same yo-yo?

Best answer hahahahahaha!

That’s exactly the same question wifey asks all the time bro!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Still haven’t found the right answer. I’m gonna try using one from this thread :rofl:

Maybe this should go in the unpopular opinions thread, but…

I used to own duplicates of favorite yoyos but it just didn’t make sense for me to have money tied up in a lot of yoyos that I would rarely throw. I try not to be a collector, in general (but I don’t always succeed).

The benefit of no duplicates and a small collection is that I value the one 3rd run Peak and the one Grail that I have more highly and I play them more compared to when I had 2-3 of each. And this is my preference, as it were, even though I totally understand the collector impulse because I have that tendency too.

Totally a fair opinion, I’m trying to hold the line more because I do want to throw my yo-yos and not have them collect dust. I’m a perfect world I’d like to have a top 10 or so and sell the rest.

They don’t collect dust if you keep them in a case or new in package (NIP)

It was more a figure of speech :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

My first unresponsive yo-yo was the horizon, and I have a duplicate because I really wanted a galaxy colorway, but it wasn’t available when I bought the black one, but it became available a year later. I was thinking I’ve thought about selling the black one, but it’s really beat up. I hit some concrete hard enough to get a burr in the aluminum that I had to shave off with a box knife because it was cutting my skin. Now my plan is for it to be my 5a beater, or maybe for one of my kids to learn with if they ever gets interested.

i have a few duplicates. in general I don’t buy them but in some situations, I do for the colorway.

I have 2 Deep States. Originally, I had the “flare” color but I never loved it. Picked up the purple which I liked a lot better. Then I saw a Saturday Market and “needed” to get it… I gave the flare to a friend who was into throwing, so I now have 2.

I have 2 JDS shutters. Got the black/pink one from YYE then, recently, saw a “Dragon” colorway which I thought was great, so I got that one.

I have 2 Al Freehands. One with the Steve Brown graphic and one with the 5A on the caps. I just like the 5A graphic and it was not available on YYE at the time. Saw it on another site recently.

I have 4 (?) plastic Freehands from back in the day. I was modding them a bit at the time and did a silicone recess on the black and white ones, i refer to them as my “Ying/yang” pair since they are opposite colors from each other. A translucent yellow one that I installed some weight rings on and experimented with different response pads. Also have the 5A logo one because i just like that graphic.

Beyond these, I have no plans for obtaining multiples. I would though, if I like the throw enough and see a colorway that I really like.

I am a better collector than I am a thrower so that may play into these decisions…

I collect Tom Kuhn No Jives, specifically. So I have an awful lot of that yo-yo, although the vast majority of them are subtly different (engravings, etc). Those I kind of “curate” because they remind me of Tom who is a terrific friend and person and who deeply affected the course of yo-yo design AND they remind me of the comparatively simple time when I grew up (and the wooden, fixed axle 3-in-1 still represented the height of “yo-yo techniology”).

Similarly, my eH yo-yo’s have some sentimental value because the process of designing them and playing them has been such a joy. Generally I’m really selective about the throws I hang onto - almost all of them I identify with specific friends or experiences, so don’t otherwise have duplicates.

Because i like yoyos. Don’t see any need to justify it past that…

I have two loofas too, and two hats, actually like 6 hats, one car, two cats, few dozen shoes, lots of shirts, a few buckets, multiple blankets, a box of 100 toothpicks, a bag of more bags…

Life is a “logistical nightmare”

Happy throwing

I don’t often get duplicates. If I do though, it’s normally because I want one to carry in my pocket and beat up regularly while I have a backup to play at home or display. Who knows? I could even lose one and would like to have a replacement (I do travel regularly) or I could eventually beat one to death and need to retire it!

Once I bought duplicates to give as gifts, another time I bought a duplicate because I couldn’t decide on which colorway I liked better

One time I got a whole set (1 of each colorway in the release) because it meant a lot to me.

Having multiples for competition makes total sense too, or just to collect them! Whatever makes ya happy, just buy all the yoyos!!!

I’m sure this has already been said, but I have duplicates of yoyos I feel like I might use in competitions. If I’m going to have to go through the agony of a yoyo change in 1A, I’m gonna want the same yoyo so my rhythm (if I even had any) isn’t entirely gone.
For offstring yoyos, it’s the same, but especially so since the likelihood of dropping one and it disappearing into an alternate dimension is much higher than any other style.
Finally, I am starting to dabble in 2A/3A because those are the two styles I am absolutely terrible at (thanks, left hand). For those two styles, having identical yoyos in each hand is much more convenient than two different ones. I couldn’t imagine trying to do 3A with two completely different yoyos.

Off topic, but do you know why he chose the name No-Jive? If the yo-yo came out in the 70s, it doesn’t seem like there was much jive in yo-yos at all. I discovered TK in the mid 1980s (green box era) and got my No-Jive then and assumed it was named in response to the Yomega Brain and other bearing/transaxle yoyos.

AKA “this yo-yo is no nonsense, or we’re not fooling around…” Maybe the basic simplicity?

Funny, now that I think about it, most of his stuff came with little pamphlets and maybe there’s something in there or maybe even printed right on the box that explains.

There kinda WAS some “jive” when you think about it, but not the Jive we think of. Yo-yo’s with crazy crackle-lightning finishes. Satelite profiles. Bowling ball shapes. Yo-yo’s which whistled. Big “Executive” yo-yo’s made from exotic fancy woods. That last one was one given to Tom which broke shortly after he got it, and he determined he wanted a simple “No Jive” yo-yo which just worked consistently. So that’s what he made.

Also remember that the first yo-yo he marketed that way was actually BEFORE the 3-in-1. It was just the Maple Leaf etchings (and San Francisco versions) which didn’t come apart. The 3-in-1 he considered the “No Jive 2” and the replaceable axle meant it could survive longer. We look back and see its fixed axle nature pertaining to the lack of “jive”, but for him it was just about simple consistency.

I have multiples of a number of yoyos because I like the different colors. In a few cases I have multiples because they are set up to play differently, say a flat v.s. concave bearing or a stock bearing and a narrower bearing. In the case of my Free Hand Zero yoyos there were different releases with different caps. I like a variety in decor.
