Why do you own duplicates of the same yo-yo?

When I develop a relationship with a throw it is very difficult to let it go. That can come from how and or who I got a throw from, what first tricks I can land on it, the color way, feel, time in life I bought it. Anything like that I will have difficulty letting a throw go. So I get a second to throw to enjoy and later sell, or in cases of beat to much to sell give to some one. So for theses reasons I may get 2 or 3 of the same model in very different color ways.

I only have a few duplicates. In one case i just wanted a backup in case i ruin one. In another cases a nicer color came my way at a good price. A few of my throws are from a friend that past on and have tremendous sentimetal value, i wanted more EDC versions. Going forward i dont expect to get many additional dupes.

I don’t have many duplicates but the ones I do have I keep set up differently. One with weight rings vs one with caps. One with steel bearings vs ceramic. Different pads and strings. It gives a little variety to a throw I really enjoy. And of course different colors. As someone mentioned, sometimes the color you want isn’t readily available when you first purchase.

I like doing this as well. Fun to type tweaks with your favorite throws.

mainly for two reasons:

  • have different colors that I like
  • play with one of the two and if you should damage it continue to have one in like new condition

I have many Duncan Butterflys and a number of Duncan Imperials (among lots of other throws). I like the colour and artwork variations but principally, the play characteristics, which are unique to each yoyo - sometimes dramatically so. It’s frankly amazing how two ostensibly very similar Butterflys will play markedly differently.
