Why do we keep buying yo-yo's?

Are new yoyo’s really that much better, or is the “feel” of it really that specific that we need to try it out? What is it, that keep us buying just another yoyo?
I have a yoyo brand that I really enjoy - so I am always looking for what they make. But I feel it’s more like a “now I am just going to collect these yoyo’s”, more than a “This is different/better than anything I have - so I NEED it…”
Anyways, I am just wondering if yoyos these days are actually that much different from oneanother, and how much more you can actually improve on a yoyo. What makes you buy another yoyo. Is it just the looks of it, or the idea of making you a better thrower?

Honestly for the last year and a half I’ve loved yo-yoing so much. A lot of times helps me tbh. Love learning new stuff. Love the ergonomics of new throws, different looks, colors, feels. Metals/ titanium list goes on… so many reasons to love it, along with how great the community is I also love to support the people in it!

I just bought my first 6 Pack! atmos Butterball

It’s play-feel for me. I think today’s yo-yo is more accurate! We know what tics at this point in the design and we’re seeing some exceptional throws, big and boutique!

I wish I found yo-yo sooner.

Tell us about you and the brand you mention.

Alright, I understand the passion for throwing, and playing with a yoyo you enjoy. I’ve been there and I am still there. I am still having the urge for buying just another new yoyo. But I’ve been thinking. How much does a new yoyo bring to your enjoyment? A specific color scheme might just be “your thing”, and I totally can relate to that. But yeah, - what I am trying to get to is - when you have a handfull of different yoyo’s, then why do we still need to get juuust another one. Can we agree, at this point - it’s not that much of a different throw?
And to make things clear. I am having this topic, because I don’t understand why I myself get tempted to buy new stuff, when I have a nice collection of different throws, but still like to get something new.

Personally, for me I feel like each yo-yo has its own distinct personality and I like trying as many as I can. Plus it’s fun to get excited for releases etc.

That being said if I only had 1 throw I would still enjoy the hobby as much as I do now

The piano player told me to?

It’s cheaper than my previous guitar/amp/pedal/drums/microphone collecting. The hedonistic treadmill and dopamine triggers from novelty may also play a (very) large part.

I feel like playing a lot of things is a part of the hobby, and for some of us we don’t have access to many things to play without buying.

I always wanted to go to a mechanical keyboard meet up for roughly the same reason. It’s too expensive to try to buy everything.

We buy yo-yos so companies can continue to make us yo-yos to buy

Its crazy seeing this tag. 13 years! Welcome back.

I think they are changing and getting better. It seems these days everyone is going wider. I remember a few years ago and everyone hated wide yoyos. Now all the best performing yoyos being used in competition seem to be getting wider and wider. New materials are also being tried out and used to either help the performance or just the look of the yoyo. I think more thought is going into the ano also. Sometimes I just buy because I like the colorway.

And I know for me getting a mail day is amazing. Almost euphoric. :joy: I guess there are worse things to be addicted too.

I only buy yo-yos when I come across them in the wild (Which has happened twice now in years). It’s sentimentality over the yo-yo itself. At the end of the day they all do the same thing and I have all possible bases covered so now I get to practice telling myself no.

For me this is a habit that is far too easy to fall into. The reason for me is it gives me that excitement of a new throw and the enthusiasm to throw more. The throw itself isn’t really the goal for me it’s about the continuation of the hobby I love. I feel without these new yo-yos my hobby in myself would become stale and maybe even a chore.
To protect myself whoever I have a limit on my collection and when that is reached I sell something to make space for the new. This is an advantage as I have met and continue to meet such a great base of people. Love the yo-yo community.

There’s something in our nature that makes us want to collect nice things. I notice it in almost all hobbies. Bicycles, kites, watches, drones, almost everything.

It’s more prevalent with yoyos I think because they’re fairly inexpensive so you get the excitement of shopping without breaking the bank. They’re beautiful little pieces of art, and as men we don’t often display our artistic side. It also helps that the small size doesn’t take up too much space.

Finally, they’re functional so it’s fun trying out different types and forming opinions on how they differ and which ones you prefer for different tricks.

When one is on the way it’s like being a kid waiting for your new toy to arrive.

A lot of it for me is just the collector bug. It’s almost another, related, thing apart from playing yoyo.

A big part of yoyo is playing different yoyos, I just like playing them all. If I didn’t yoyo I wouldn’t buy yoyos.

I started in 2017 and have amassed over 200 now lol. A lot of it was I liked the specs and the shape. Or it was a cool color series (OD Saturday Market). I have a few from the 50s as well (Duncan World of Colors), just to see how the old school played. I also have a few that have appreciated in value over the years, that’s always cool. But mainly specs and shapes that I think I would like. I should start selling some soon lol.

I think we bought new yo-yos to try to fill an inner void that is never filled… it is a spiral of consumption and permanent dissatisfaction. Sometimes I think that people who collect things have some kind of imbalance in their lives. That said, I admit that if I had a lot of money I would buy many more yo-yos that I want and I don’t have. Sometimes you want what you don’t have and when you have it you don’t want it anymore as when you didn’t have it.The best thing about getting things is having them and the best thing about having them is getting them
