Yo-yos are kinda like sneakers like lots of old stuff is hard to find. I’m not really a collector and don’t enjoy searching for stuff so I like to buy new yo-yos. It also helps support the brands and retails I love to support. I’m also like newer ish so I don’t have a bunch of old yo-yos I got years ago.
Honestly I buy new YoYo because it’s cool and looks fun or I tried it at club and it was awesome. With that said YoYo is cheaper than cars, or guns or magic the gathering…. Just saying
I have several of my favorite types of yoyos, and I think it’s half aesthetics half play-style that decides when I get another.
For example, I have a few responsives for when I don’t want to mess with binds or when I’m showing yoyos to someone who is new. I tend to lean towards “slim” for some reason for responsives.
I still feel like I haven’t found “the one” for unresponsive play…I’m kind of feeling my way through what I like. Even though I have several favorites for different reasons, I still haven’t found the one that just feels perfect.
Of my unresponsives, I have one that I’m not afraid to ding because it’s delrin sides, I have a heavy bimetal one for speed, I have a slim that challenges me with it’s string gap, and I have a Onedrop that’s very playful and fun. Definitely still feeling my way around
I think it is super nice every now and then to try and throw a new yoyo, it kind of keep the flame going.
Sometimes it happen that you feel demotivated or just uninspired in general, then you get a new yoyo, start to play with it for hours and new ideas and tricks comes out.
Other than that is nice to see what is going on the yoyo world, how playing is changing and so yoyos specs are changing, experiment what other players like and make your own idea in case one day you will have a signature or a yoyo made by yourself.
If a person can afford, why not? Is nice to collect yoyos and try a lot of them, it ignite discussion and progress, if I had the money probably I will buy one yoyo a month or every time a new release catch my interest.
Who said that you need only one yoyo is a liar, no one has only one yoyo even pros usually have huge collections!
I keep buying them because I love sampling things and trying them out…and there’s no such thing as a yoyo library where I can just borrow or rent them.
My collection is fairly large (I feel at least) hoovering at around 70-90 throws at any time.
But a lot of them rotate. There’s a few keepers but a lot of ones that get swapped out as well. They can feel crazy different when playing and can inspire me to work on different sorts of tricks.
When you consider the trading and selling that goes on. It’s not actually crazy expensive as a hobby. And I do try to keep it under control a little and be a little more selective nowadays.
Buying a cheap yoyo to try out is extremely easy though. Today one from AlieX should arrive that cost $8 shipped. So I bought it just to see if it is any good.
A $120+ bimetal I have to seriously think about. But a sub $30 anything…very easy to justify.

I agree with this,@albertino👍
So first rule… pre-constructed decks only.
I never got into this but did get into a few online card games in recent years that I enjoyed until they got too complex for me to keep up with. They came out with cards that allowed you to stack multiple things up and then set in motion a chain of actions with devastating consequences. I couldn’t keep track of all the needed components and how to use them and so I just ended up getting smeared all over the place. And that stopped being fun. Most games have gotten that way for me though. I’m back to Tiger Woods Golf. Which I quite enjoy.
I haven’t been able to buy a new yoyo in some time due to being short on funds but when I am able to, I too love the way getting a new throw can inspire and peak my attention to different, often new details in many different ways. I also agree that supporting the community is a great and important aspect of a yoyo purchase. This is a hobby that carries a lot of meaning for all of us, and while I don’t by any means think it’s necessary to pick up every new drop, purchasing a new throw can be truly exciting and invigorating.
I gave My deck I had to my brother a while back and he technically lost it when someone broke into his car a few years back but he has enough cards I could build a new deck out of his spares.
I’ve never done MTG. I played Pokémon online card game and Elder Scrolls online card game. The problem that I have these days with that sort of game is… you got a minute???
I can’t put the cards in my head and manipulate them to come up with strategies. So I end up staring at the cards not being able to figure out what to do. I’m not saying I’m not open to trying something out though.
