What's the best wooden fixed axle?

I’m looking to buy a wooden fixed axle throw - what would people recommend these days?

can’t go wrong with a no jive

Or Find a No Jive on the BST or auction site. Legend Wing is hard to beat as far as price and availability

I’m not a 0a master by ANY stretch, but the no jive is fantastic.

I also just picked up a Boise Woodworks Buffalo and it’s also very very good. I love it

I’ll be honest the best wood being made right now is by @Rich Boise woodworks from a consistency and constant production standpoint. He’s just been pumping them out and taking all the feedback to make them better and better recently.

Something more bespoke or unique @DLC ed Davidson is your guy where he pumps out a few YoYo’s a week and every YoYo he makes is special and different but if great quality.

Dazzling Dave makes fantastic very consistent YoYo’s if you catch him between his workshops and guy with a YoYo shows and such he’s a pleasure to work with as he is very communicative and collaborative during the making process.

All three of the above are great about taking whatever idea you have and working with you to get it the way you want it.

Want something more big standard the yyf boho is cheap cheap but gets the job done. The legend wing is a bit nicer at around the same price but not as available.

Want a classic tom khun still makes BC style woody and no jive imperials they are very much a taste of the 80s and before.

Want something classic but slightly more modern. (Aka plastic) but on the cheap end. Grab a Duncan butterfly. It’s surprisingly still plays great for what it is. Lots of fun at a low price.

Harder to find but all are great options.

bc Apollo is a fantastic classic,
a spinworthy knack (or any other late model sw) will do you right.
Tk/bc no jive 3-1 is always sought after
Wildwoods gnomad
Tmbr eh

Also a John gates se which isn’t as much hard to find as it is hard to get one unless you got an in with someone in CO or hit his periodic drops at just the right time or find him at a contest,

What tricks are you wanting to do, stalls, loops, old school string tricks?

I wouldn’t worry about getting the best, just get one that works for what you want to do.

I need to grab another one from Boise. He’s improved so much since I purchased a couple from him a year or so ago, and those recent purple hearts looked AMAZING.

Yeah, the guy’s willingness to come to the forums and take a bunch of feedback and then come out strong with implementing it really colored me impressed.

I had also bought a year ago and it’s come a long way.

SPYY X TMBR Eh if you can find one.

The Eh is probably the best player I’ve used. No jives are lots of fun too.

As others have pointed out Rich at Boise Woodworks makes fantastic yoyos. I partial to the Buffalo since it’s based off a custom order he made for me a few months back, but the Badger and Alpha series are great as well.

I am also a huge fan of the No Jive 3in1 and it might be my favorite wood fixed axle with the Buffalo coming in close second.

Duncan butterfly might be my favorite all time yoyo. It’s cheap, plays amazing and if it gets lost or broken it’s easy to replace. It also doesn’t burn through strings the way a wooden axle yoyo will.

YYF Legend Wing is another banger, it’s the cheapest quality wooden yoyo you can get IMO. Response is consistent and again it’s cheap so if something happens to it, it’s not a big loss.

I have a couple BC Apollos and honestly they’re not my favorite but they tend to be a bit on the heavier side. BC Blackbird on the other hand is amazing but a bit difficult to find.

My current favorite is the Buffalo from Boise. The pull start dimple is the chef’s kiss.

Also love my BC Apollo, Blackbird (wing shape), Badger, and No Jive 3 in 1.

The Apollo is a gem. Especially the early run Apollo Pros. Of course the No Jive is one of the best, and now I’m definitely ordering from the next Boise drop. I’m a fan of pull start dimples on woods.

Rich at Boise Woodworks or Ed at DavidsonLatheCraft. They got customs and off the rack stuff. Spinworthy is worth it too when you can track one down.

If you are okay with just the axle being made from wood, the best bang for your buck would be @Ardeus 3d prints, or a Spintastics Manta Ray. I honestly cant think of anything else I’d use if I was ever in a situation to compete

Of the 3d makers I’ve somehow not got a 3d print from @Ardeus yet but they look
Amazing. And everyone that has a throw from him love them.

I’m partial to the OG spintastic manta ray. The newer ones have a cheaper rattle to them that feels like a tolerance thing between the mold and the plastic pogs. The new ones are also just a bit lighter as they don’t have the beefy weight rings like the ones from when spintastic was run by dale. Either way it’s a solid cheap option that’s easy to pickup play and replace if it breaks.

I got two of the newer Purple ones, one had rattle, one did not. I heard one in four have the rattle, they are definetly cheap enough to grab a couple to ensure you get a rattle free one.

I definitely need to grab an older one though to see the difference, thank you for the heads up
