Thanks man, it inspired me to make a thread for others to share their stories. Would love to hear yours.
My first yoyo was a Yomega Brain from Cracker Barrel sometime around 1990. A Smothers Brothers video was soon to follow and the rest was history.
This:
Late summer 2015. Had a conversation with someone about childhood toys. For a week I held it and threw it incorrectly. Didnât really understand slipknots. I got a Duncan trick book. I got a Butterfly and it took me weeks to learn Forward Pass. Within a month I had 15 yoyos and got down Forward Pass and Around the World. A year later I learned looping. In 2018 I learned Brain Twister and started getting serious. I still find the Duncan Imperial extremely difficult to do anything on.
Well, I revived an old thread I was going to start a new thread but that would be lame! I canât believe I found that website⌠the Yomega Firestorm had to be discontinued years agoâŚ
I think my Yomega Brain came from there tooâŚ
Yeah, I went a different direction with the one I started so that they are very different. Mine is for the whole journey rather than the beginning. Feel free to hop in there and share as well so we can see how things progressed since your first throw. Both threads can easily coexist.
I got my first yoyo back around 1997. It was a red Yomega Fireball. I loved that thing. I got pretty decent with it and quickly acquired a brain and a Saberwing Fireball as well as a few other random yoyos. I learned a handful of tricks and like many kids of the time would hang out in the school yard showing off before the first bell. I donât know whatever became of those first yoyos of mine but I do miss them. When my kids recent expressed an interest in wanting a yoyo it resparked my own interest and so I not only got yoyos for them, I got them for me too.
Yomega still sells their entire line in one form or another. Donât pay more than retail, theyâre not rare or vintage.
The very first yoyo I ever got was a clear orange duncan butterfly. I was in 4th grade ( 10 yrs old?)
Everyone was getting fireballs and brains but I liked the butterfly shape more.
I didnât see the firestorm⌠did you?
If Fireballs were the cool choice then a Butterfly was the classy choice. A yoyo for those who respect the roots.
Keeping it real
My first one was a red Duncan imperial in 1996,before yoyos were cool in the 90s. My first metal yoyo was in 2010 with a Pocket Pros Zombie.
2011 when I started. Random side bar youtube video. Jensen winning 2010 worlds. Thought well I have to check out a yoyo. Thanks to Migroux77 and the OD forum I got 3 for a great price. CLYW Campfire, Planet 9, ILYY Mary bape. Never had one till then and still donât like plastic. But I like grinds and plastic donât grind. Well the C3 Halo did okay. Still one of my favorite pictures Iâve ever taken.
As I said, âin one form or another.â They may have different names but their baseline product hasnât changed in years.
Duncan Freehand Zero, circa 2008.
My buddy who was already into it recommended it, while he had a plastic grind machine
I started in 2020 very early on into quarantine. I was on YouTube looking for hobbies, and I came across YoTricks. Ordered a Fizz and a Sage and I was up and running in no time!
I believe my very first yo-yo was a Duncan hornet and my first unresponsive yo-yo was a magicyoyo v3 and I started throwing in 2015
I think I was maybe 7 years old when I got my first Duncan Butterfly, which wouldâve been around 1992. I learned the basics, then pretty much stopped until 2019 when I got a Sage from YoTricks after realizing my Butterfly XT wasnât cutting it for their trick tutorials.
Back in 1998 (or 1999) and the first one I remember the name of was a Henryâs Viper.
Left the game when the boom was over then came back during quarantine in 2020!
