What trick are you working on?

Cool! Nicely done!

Looks good! The more you land it, the more you will smooth it out and speed it up! Buddha’s Revenge is right there from the 1.5 mount as well!

It will get better… It took a few takes to film this… Tried yesterday and hit fed up with it as I wasn’t getting it at all. First was better

I just discovered Braintwister Combo Series videos on another yoyo tutorials site.
Looks like a nice way to acquire some flow now I can land basic tricks.

(oh, and I feel like I’ll have to install Instagram to share vids if I want to ask for advice)

That series has been very helpful to me!

Thatsite also has a great ftontsryle 7 video series that is great. I downloaded all those videos onto my phone and watch them regularly. There are a ton of tips on each one.

Most of the fronstyle vids are outstanding. The Brain Twister Combo Series has things that just baffle me. Weaves and frontstyle suicides? Watching that makes my brain all fuzzy because it is hard to comprehend. I just try to pick a tiny, tiny element and work on that TINY element cuz I get SO overwhelmed SO easily.

Yeah, I think that’s the key. Lots of tricks are overwhelming at first because of the many parts involved, especially as one moves from intermediate to advanced (hell, I struggled with split the atom a couple of months ago before it clicked). But I’ve really taken an approach where I just try to progress through a trick one step at a time. Once I have one component somewhat down, I add the next one on and so forth. If I try to do a whole trick from the get go, I often struggle and get frustrated.

As one of my friends told me years ago regarding our grad work: “You can’t eat an elephant whole. You have to take it bite by bite.” It applies to so much in life, including new yoyo tricks.

Mavetrick #9. I needed to learn more arm tricks, so this looked good. I only need to get it smooth now!

Split the atom and barrell rolls kicked by butt and took me a 2 months! Heck, split bottom mount kicked my butt! Now I try to have nice flow cycling through tricks. It’s HARD! When I learned brain twister I was so excited I could barely sleep that night! That was my first intermediate trick. My advice would be to learn Ripcord and Wormhole ASAP as these two tricks will help you A LOT in advancing.

I recommend watching tutorials of these from other people as well. A variety of angles helps a lot.

Split the Atom was the breakthrough trick for me. I was so jacked up about getting it at the time. I was using a YYF Whip then, so that made it more challenging than if I had the throws I have now.

Thanks for the videos. Ripcord is my go-to at the end of my combos but I hadn’t come across Wormhole. Guess I’ll be working on that one today with Cold Fusion

Wow wow wow… slow down!
I’m only at volume 1 for the moment, and it’s still a long way to go for suicides!

At least, the first combo is doable. I don’t yet have the best style, but I’m already happy with that flow!

The thing I gave up on is the “throw directly to pinwheel” thing. I don’t know why, but it just does not work. :man_shrugging:

I love the pinwheel when I’m throwing to death metal!

Does the yoyo just keep getting off plane and spinning?

Same with me…in the yoyo boom, I couldn’t figure out Split the Atom for the life of me…illustrations in books could only go so far as well as a blurry VHS dub of a how to yoyo video. At the time I thought it was the hardest yoyo trick one could master. Fast forward to 2010 when I got back into it, it was one of the first tricks I learned (right here on YYE) and seemingly picked it up immediately. It’s what made me decide to look ahead and say “what’s my next challenge.” I learned on a Pocket Pros Zombie.

No, it’s not a plane problem, rather a momentum problem I think.
After a front throw, it just drops down and lacks momentum for a pinwheel.
After a side throw (breakaway), it works perfect, because it’s on the right trajectory.
