Thanks @mable and @Hanker ! I actually met Brandon Vu and asked him if he had any advice to avoid axle knots with sky binds and he showed me one of the Guy Wright variants that he uses for breakaway / side style. I can land it ok, but it’s not smooth at all because I can’t stop from wincing as the yoyo goes by my face.
“Vibe on a bad throw.”
“My car swerves around when I jerk the steering wheel back and forth.”
Having to bind on every throw.
Semi responsive yoyos that are too responsive at the wrong time in a trick, or not responsive enough at the end of trick spin time.
Learning bind tricks so i can bind smoothly after learning new string tricks.
Thowing a knot on every trick attrmpt while practicing, and then needing to bind if i get the knot out before i lose all spin.
Did i mention binds?
That’s interesting, as binds are my favorite part of throwing! I swear, I often find myself binding even when there’s a lot of spin left. I’d rather bind and throw again than doing a few more moves with the spin that I have left
i agree
i will often just throw, bind, repeat. and repeat. i enjoy the bind. it’s the part of the hobby that elevates you to the next level in 1A. it’s tough to get at first but once you do, and you can start doing string tricks and slacks, it’s awesome. it’s the big ‘a-ha’ moment in the progression. the door to the next level.
sometimes i do just want to have the tug return though. there’s a lot to be said for the more responsive throws and i love throwing those as well. the RBC, El Mijo, Respawn, Deep State all get thrown often.
but the bind…
Enjoy the throw my friends.

Its just growing pains. The 20 plus years of throwing experience with responsves is hard for me to get over because my binds (started trying to do them only in the past 3 months) are not up to my limited skill level yet. Also, i just prefer a tug return so the yoyo is still fun to throw and catch when im not trying to execute harder string tricks. Cant really throw forward passes unresponsive. Thousands of years, throw, bounce, return was enough. But not in 2022. Watching doc pops video on the history of the bind helps a little, im still in that early 2000s mindset of binds are lame. I stopped throwing before binds became the norm. Just like all the prior masters thought going to ball bearings was cheating.
Sure you can; I actually do that all the time. Usually I just do it when I’m checking my bind or as a safety throw, but sometimes just for fun… it’s just for fun anyway as I could throw it any other way to do the same thing.
I just forward toss, roll it around my hand kinda like a… that split bottom mount extra flair entrance thingy… and then it’s in a good position to bind.
My downstairs neighbor’s biggest yoyo pet peeve is when I got my first 4a throw this week.
My current pet peeve is gravity.
Probably the fact it doesnt really exist in the real world. I cant buy an unresponsive yoyo in a store where I live in a city of close to 2 million people, I have never seen someone throw a yoyo, if the internet went down I would struggle to learn new tricks and have nobody to discuss the hobby with.
And when you finally find a place that sells modern yoyos, they jacked up the price so it’d be cheaper to just buy it online anyway.
I’d have waaaay too many yoyos if there was a brick and mortar store down the street that sold modern yoyos. But if there was they would hopefully sell gently used yoyos. That would be cool as I could unload a lot.
current pet peeve is cleaning a bearing, getting it playing nicely and then somehow getting some debris in it within the same day. not fun
When you live in New Zealand you add about $20US postage on to any online order so I would be quite happy to pay a bit more and not wait 5 painful weeks!
Not being able to get a certain colorway because you missed a drop/restock.
De-shielding bearings.
Does anybody just sell them without the shields, that would be amazing!
The GWAY and Mazal Top hybrids are sold de-shielded. The Mazal Top are great I put them in my Ti for extra audible goodness. I will assume GWAY are also fantastic since they don’t make bad stuff.
nsk usually has them. you can find magicyoyo ones unshielded.
If you check photos some bearings don’t have shields installed, but it varies by company. Or feel free to make a note when you order with us, It only takes me a few seconds to pop bearing shields off.
