Unpopular Yoyo Opinions

I’m from Texas and I had to look up that reference. Random!

I love American sauces.

Nah, not for me it isn’t. I understand what’s going on. I just personally don’t like it. I want the yoyo to be able to spin without lots of outside forces keeping it going. Like I said, horizontal play just doesn’t seem like “yoyoing” to me.

I recently saw a yoyo documentary from around 10 years ago and in it someone makes the comment, “Back in my day we played with the yoyo. Nowadays they play with the string.”

I dunno. The string is part of the whole apparatus. It makes sense to me that it would get heavily involved in play. But everyone’s gonna have their own opinions about what constitutes proper yoyo play, I guess, and a lot of that probably comes down to when you first got into it, and what kind of play was considered the norm during that era.

How I’ve always interpreted the whole “I like to play with the yoyo, not the string” thing is how much the yoyo is actually moving vs the string. Nowadays much of the meta involves slacks and whips around the yoyo with less actual yoyo movement, compared to 10ish years ago anyway.

So I think taking it back like 10 years people actually played with the yoyo more. Speed play and horizontal is more playing with the yoyo, not the string because while you are interacting with the string, it’s in order to make the yoyo move.

Agree with everything you just said.

This seems to be the case with different age groups, if you don’t have Instagram and are only on the forums you will find this to Ben very prominent. On the contrary, if you look at yoyoers on Instagram they tend to be younger around my age and care most about tricks.

People on the forums (I’m in no way knocking the people on here as I love you all) don’t focus on the tricks as much as they are typically around 30 or so

I agree with @andy569 to an extent here, when he won with a replay pro, it was the year directly after he won worlds, what more does he have to prove?

Gentry has stated himself that he changed and built his routine to compensate for the fact he is playing with plastic

oh this is a really interesting point of view! i know a whole bunch of yoyoers in the late 20s to mid 30s that make only a few purchases per year, as their experience throughout the years have allowed them to find their optimal and favorite yoyo type, or generally indifferent to new releases. they spend most of their time learning new tricks or honing their styles.

i’m probably the odd one in the group that makes frequent purchases :joy:

Now that is an unpopular opinion if I ever saw one.

Lowkey agree

Only time I would buy a mystery box is if I knew I’d be happy with everything im getting or id be able to sell it individually for more than what I paid for it

Yeah, I’m not a fan of buying a mystery. I’m too picky to enjoy the randomness involved.

Solid colors are rubbish❤️

I feel pretty strongly that solid colors are the only finishes that do (and will) stand the test of time. Splashes and fades are like 80’s fashion; fascination with it may come and go periodically, but it will not endure.

Well, I’m talking about my personal opinion. I just see more attractive splashes and some fades than solid colors. It just has to do with personal opinions

Oh, for sure. The question is, which opinion is more unpopular? Yours or mine?

Haha. There should be a poll
