Tom Kuhn Appreciation thread

Wow that turned out great! I tried to get the Duncan yo-yo man, but it came out all out of whack.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate! Santa came through big time for me with this Tom Kuhn heirloom box. It’s been in storage for a long time and the box is in a bit rough condition, especially at the hinges, but it came with the Sleep Machine and Flying Camel and extra string. I added a couple pieces from my collection to make it complete. Really stoked on this one!

Yeah man! It was such a great find. I asked the lady who sold it to me about it and she said she was cleaning out her shed and found it. Her husband had ordered the box after buying a Tom Kuhn yo-yo at a Sharper Image store while he was a traveling musician. It’s just been sitting in storage for years with the Sleep Machine and Flying Camel inside. She said he still has one or two yo-yos and gave away the others. There’s definitely some oxidation on the hex bolts and axle on the Camel and also on the axle of the Sleep Machine, but the bearing spins well and shows no corrosion. The Flying Camel still plays amazing and is one of the smoothest no jives I own. I’m gonna order some new axles/ nuts for them soon.

I’ll probably bring the box to a local woodworker to have it restored. The hinges are in rough shape and there’s a small crack on the lid side of one of them. There’s also a section of the lid where the panels are beginning to separate. Otherwise, it’s in relatively good condition considering its age and being stored in an outdoor unit for so long. I’d love to own one of the larger cases one day but for now, I’m really happy to have this one!

Beautiful 6-slot Heirloom set and a great story to go with it. The corrosion from the nuts isn’t too hard to polish clean. I’ve used Never Dull polish to restore the luster of hex nuts and it does a fine job. Just take the nuts out of the yo-yo before you polish them.

I shared some photos of my tk_yoyo_fieldguide instagram account of my polishing efforts back in March of 2024. You’ll see the before/after of a very similar Flying Camel.

Thanks Chris! I follow your Tom Kuhn instagram account and I’ve scoured through a lot of the Tom Kuhn threads. You’ve provided such an enormous amount of information and history! Thank you for being such a great resource! Yours, Ed’s, jblack’s and all the other contributor’s collections are just INCREDIBLE to look at. I’ll definitely check out that NevrDull polish for the nuts and axles.

I always wanted a silver bullet 2 since I was a kid, and now I’m glad I can finally say I own one.
