I was gone all day and come back to see this awful newsā¦ Itās extremely unfortunate that this has happened. Weāve lost a great company today. Iāve owned SPYYās and have thrown several, I havenāt gotten a chance to try out some of the newer stuff though, which is a bummer. I think I might try and find a nice SPYY Pro on the BST. Anyways, this is truly sad news.
I wonder what some of the team members, especially Guy Wright, one of my all time favorite yoyoers, and Sebby are going to do now. I hope they get picked up by CLYW or OD or something, they are fantastic players deserving of a sponsorship.
Somebody mentioned that someone could run SPYY or takeover. While this isnāt exactly possible, I think itās very much possible if a company like CLYW or One Drop got the rights to continue manufacturing some of SPYYās models, along with the CAD design. Maybe the community could take a vote on one or two models that should be continued to be made so that SPYY could live on in a way. I think this would be very possible actually and I hope itās something that not only people but manufacturers would consider doing, it would be really cool actually.
But yes, very sad news to hear, but I wish everyone involved the best. Thank you SPYY for your contributions to the yoyo community the past ten years, you will not be forgotten as a manufacturer, company, or supporter.
Hope Alexis JV is still on his way to worldās, which Iām pretty sure will be the case. I imagined him doing his routine with a SPYY shirt on as a tribute, but if heās hoping to be noticed by a new sponsor (and I think he should be on companiesā radars) that might not be the best approach.
Or maybe it would be? Maybe a company would say, āThatās the kind of guy I want on my team?ā Who knows. It was just an image I had.
I would like to say Good bye to Spyy. One of the most underrated companies out there. They will be missed. I have used all their throws and I love them all.
Well, I own the Supra, El Ranchero, Punchline Repeater, Spyder II, EH, EH 2013, and Addiction at this time. The Pro has been on my list of the next Spyy to get. I enjoyed their throws.
I think we should just take the statement that the owner made on Yoyonews for what it is. The owner stated that turning Spyy into a full time operation melted his soul. I read that as, turning a hobby and passion into āwork,ā made him not want to continue any more. I guess everyone can interpret that for themselves.
But, he never really said it was due to any financial difficulties with the business. It could be that, but he hasnāt said that as yet. If turning a fulfilling passion into work, is what caused it to collapse, I can fully understand that. Perhaps someday they will revive Spyy, part time, find the love again, and continue it someday. Iād like to see that happen.
I mostly put my money where my proverbial mouth is. However, I also look for deals too, which means BST. I bought a Solaris and Ronin on BST. I did buy an Amplifier from YYE, so I feel that Iāve supported SPYY to some degree.
In general, most of their designs just donāt catch my eye or work well for me. However, both the Solaris and Amplifier I enjoy tremendously. Maybe thatās where the problem was? I really would have liked to see them re-release the Solaris. At the same point, I donāt see me shuffling around my wants list to add more SPYY models. Iām fairly satisified with what I have, and as a collector who plays what he buys, I donāt see the need the have complete sets of colorways or ācompetition setsā of 4 or 6 units. What I have now is sufficient or me. This mindset might be part of the reason apparently sales werenāt booming.
Based on the YoYoNews article, I am left with the impression of ātoo much effort for too little returnsā as the reason they decided to shut down. 10,000 units sold. Not bad. However, I donāt know how long SPYY has been around. I donāt know how large the yoyo community is. I honestly donāt know if these are good or bad numbers. Iām sure companies like YYJ, YYF and Duncan are easily selling those kind of numbers annually across their entire products line.
So, H-Spin, now SPYY. What company is next to fall? I donāt have enough knowledge or insight to venture a guess. What this does mean is some of the amazing new companies have a bit less competition.
Heās not really late, heās the first one to announce this on the forum that Iāve seen, by starting this thread. Also, the article he posted from YoyoNews gives the statement, from the owner directly, about why he is closing the business. It is something people are interested in knowing.
The market is pretty flooded w high end metals at this point, you can get a lot of crazy good throws for crazy cheap pricesā¦And at some point, somethingās gotta give. There either needs to be a big enough influx of new people to the hobby or certain companies unfortunately get to the point where they canāt make ends meet.
In a way this doesnāt surprise me, and while Iām sad it didnāt work out for Steve and Iām bummed for the SPYY team, I am glad that heās not letting community pressure push him into staying once heās burnt out and happier still that heās still gonna be around.
Yup, I read āconfirmedā but didnāt realize it was a linkā¦so the OP helped me out by reposting it. I think others missed it too. Maybe he was lateā¦but not for some of usā¦me included.
Todays yoyo market is very competitive. Everyone wants a piece of the market share. It seems like there have a been a dozen new yoyo manufacturers this year. If you donāt have that flashy yoyo to catch everyoneās eyes then chances are most people are going to pass it up. That is the power of a nice anno.
I really loved SPYY yoyos, regardless of their anno. However, I must say I absolutely love my Slime Slash Addiction 2. Beautiful anno.
The Solaris was great. The Spyder 2 is one of my favorite undersized throws. The Supra is a performance beast. The Revenger is an extremely playable super wide with beautiful engravings. The Pistolero and El Ranchero are very unique. I could go on and on.
As amazing as these throws are, there are so many other companies out there with equally awesome throws. I imagine for most yoyo manufacturers itās extremely tough doing this as any more than a hobby.
