The yoyo brand SPYY is closed??

As someone who just recently re-entered the yoyoing world, when/why did Sebby leave CLYW?

Same. I definitely thought he could have pulled out a really good routine. That’s kind of a bummer…

Where’s ed during all of this?

He posted about it on Instagram. I assume he’s not posting in the thread by choice.

Surfing

Or playing a uke.

I really want to learn how to play the Ukulele. My mom’s friend can teach me…

Guilty. Family camp trip to Outer Banks. Waves have only been knee-thigh, but pretty w/offshore winds.

I got a very nice email from Steve a few days ago. It certainly sucks to see SPYY go, but things had been changing and that’s the way of the world. I have nothing but good memories and gratitude to associate with the company. I am not the sort of player who usually gets the kind of sponsorship I did. Steve never asked me to play like someone else or to try to win contests. He made yoyo’s for me which were way against the mainstream. They really didn’t “need” me, but all the same I was put on an awesome team with some of my best friends, flown all over, paid royalties, and had my weirdest ideas taken into consideration, and was never once asked to change the responsive/fixed-axle direction my playing was taking. It was an amazing journey from stem to stern, and I’m proud to have been associated with SPYY.

It’s too bad that a lot of players never realized just how awesome the yoyo’s were. Hype really drives the yoyo world and SPYY was always more about an understated image and incredible quality. My best to everybody who supported the company.

Apart of me died inside.
I have a solaris and a spyder 2 from spyy.
Such amazing quality. such fascinating designs. And most of all, incredible performance.
I feel spyy is one of the most underrated yo-yo companies.
Its sad seeing Steve go.
I hope to see a comeback one day.

NOOOOO! I need a SPYY Eh!!!

Huge bummer SPYY is closing, I loved all the models of theirs I played. I hope the best for the team members.

Any predictions on where Alexis JV, Ed, and the other team mebers will go? I honestly think Ed could rock Duncan haha and I wouldnt be surprised if that’s where Nate goes back to.

Would love to see Ed as some sort of TMBR player (just promoing!) and with an EH2 model at some point. It can be identical to the EH or EH2013 as far as I’m concerned.

Alexis JV has said he’s interested in being “indie” for a little while. In the long term? Hard to say! I think of him as a SPYY player. :frowning: I think he’d be good for CLYW-- a player with a different image than anybody else on their roster. Could be yet another new member of C3! I could see him as a player for a smaller team like G2 or DS, but those are the kinds of teams that still won’t be able to fund a trip to World’s for him. :frowning:

I agree with GregP, ed can always fall back on TMBR.

Many of us were discussing presumptions about why the business closed, how we never tried them, or what they may have done wrong with their yo-yos, but at the end of the day, none of it matters, because what’s done is done.

The last post is what you would hope to see more of when a business closes. I can tell a true fan wrote that…it stood out.

Well done post for a thread like this. We could all learn something.

I could see a few of the members going to Duncan, CLYW or Monkeyfinger. I can also see a few of them possibly going to smaller operations like SWYYC, G2, or someone else small. Ed already has a sig collab with TMBR so that seems likely but there are also a few other fixed axle companies making noise like, Hildy Bros and Forest YoYo Company.

I’d be happy if some of them go to Duncan or Deadly SpINS

In my yoyo collection, I have a set of special cases for particular brands that I really love.

Those cases are: General-Yo, CLYW, Duncan, Tom Kuhn and SPYY.

SPYY will be sorely missed.

I’ve watched this video I think six times since I saw it this morning. The SPYY team was one of the best ever assembled in my opinion. Maybe not by winning contests, but by creativity, innovation, flow, and style. I’m curios to see where they’ll all move on to. For some reason though, I don’t think it will ever feel as right to see them on any other team than SPYY…
