I have 4 different Wedges and I haven’t experienced this yet, although every throw I own I try to take apart as little as possible. One thing I do, but really only with the wedge or other YYF yoyo with arrows, I recorded a video unscrewing it one turn at time, then went extra slow right when reaches that last thread before coming apart, note the position, then reassemble as closely as I can while counting the same turns it took to unscrew it and all of mine still line up. It sounds like extra work but really it seemed like no effort at all and I was curious if it’d work haha.
Honestly there are multiple CLYW throws that just don’t do it for me. They are sluggish and uninteresting and aren’t particularly stable. That said, the Arctic Circle 2 is IMO one of the best throws ever made and also one of the most under appreciated.
Banshee
It is a really great yoyo, don’t get me wrong… Just not my cup of tea.
It almost feels too light, and not very powerful. I expected it to feel a lot more like a draupnir or flashback. It seems lacking on spin time and stability. I have a difficult time keeping it sorted out, its really easy for me to knock it off kilter. Spin time might be due to the pads or the bearing, I’d need to change the pads and clean the bearing to see if that fixes the spin time, and I know draggy pads can cause stability issues. Switching to a full concave or grooved bearing might totally change the way this one plays.
Maybe its just made for a more skilled player than myself, I’m not at the point where I really appreciate a yoyo that is easy to nudge and adjust. It is dead smooth, has nice response and feels good in my hand. I really want to like it, I’ll have to spend some time tuning it.
This is my sentiment too. I don’t know that it’s fair to say a company has less soul just because they’ve been successful and grown, but nevertheless that is the feeling for me. I get less excited about YYF stuff, probably mistakenly.
I like the banshee, but prefer the pelican, wolf, hawk, reaper and dire wolf above both the 18 banshee and the Al7 banshee. All my g2 throws get a lot of play time, but I tend to pick the others first.
I’ve got a Hawk, and I love it. Wolf is on my short list of G2s to try.
Also, Pelican looks an awful lot like a MYY N12 to me… Which is an excellent yoyo, so that’s on my short list too.
Yoyofactory definitely have more of a corporate vibe about them, but they are still very genuine people who really love yoyo.
As big as they are, they are one of only two companies that have ever agreed to trade yoyos with me. I filled out a form on their website requesting it, and @YOHANS himself emailed me back, keen to trade.
This makes them champs in my book.
for some reason, i really dislike the cheap plastic yoyos
As a dissenting opinion, the Wildfire is one of my favorite throws. It’s kind of like a slightly heavier playing, friendlier Grasshopper GTX. It’s a great mix of fun and performance.
I got to messing with my wildfire today, took it apart for the first time and when I looked really close I noticed that the response pads weren’t sitting quite flat, each side had a couple slightly high spots. I mashed them down and it plays much better, more like I expected it to play. I still feel like they are interfering some, I got a couple snags I really wasn’t expecting. I’m going to rip them out of there and silicone it. Then I think it will live up to its potential.
Revised popular (?) thing I can’t get into: snow tires. I checked the CLYW throws I like and none of them have snow tires, and the ones I dislike have them.
Wait whooa not all CLYWs use snow tires? I just assumed they all did!
Beats me, all the CLYW I like I bought second hand and they don’t have those soft purple squishy things in them.
What I do love about CLYW is that silky smooth blast they put on so many of their throws, one of my favorite blasts. I wish the wildfire had that blast.
Speaking of YYF, I have a ton of respect for them and I really like all their higher end throws. I managed to snag just about every bimetal and their better mono metals during the bgrade sales, and every one of them is good to great.
My funny story about them is I bought one of those awful Fast 201 yoyo’s when they first came out. I hated it then, I still hate it. It’s such an awful thing that I paid no more attention to anything YYF did for a long time, until I saw the Edge Beyond, which not only convinced me it was time to take another look at YYF, but got me to take another look at the whole hobby.
I pull my 201 out every now and then throw it a few times and toss it back in my old school yoyo box, it serves as a great reminder of how good we have it now.
I can’t believe they still sell the Fast 201, but other than that they’ve totally redeemed themselves.
The CF and Big Boi were only popular for a few seconds though… it’s kinda sad that the CF is retired.
Pelican is one of the few G2’s I have never tried, I want to though…
–UPDATE:–
For anyone who sees this…I switched the flat bearing it came with, with a concave bearing and it’s made the yo MUCH more stable and tilting is no longer much of an issue with it.
…and I figured out what was wrong with my response (lol I’m a dumb-dumb) and no longer have issues with this.
I’ve been having a ton of fun with this throw since!
–/UPDATE–
…
I’m trying SO hard to like my Legendary Terrarian.
But I can’t :(.
It looks really cool…I love the color (green).
But dang. It’s just not fun at all for me!
It could VERY well just be me. I am a noob after all.
But of all the higher end yos (and even my 2 cheap magicyoyos)…it’s the least stable throw I have. It tilts all the time…and the response is really annoying me.
It was slippery when I got it, so I siliconed it. Though it still tilt a ton, at least the binds were snappy. But then I played with it for another day…and now I’m back to square one with it, where it’s tough for me to bind (using kitty fats…even tried today with a brand new one).
And…
I’m just not having any fun at all with it .
I’m still learning a lot of the simpler string tricks like matrix an budha’s revenge and stuff…and I’m already having a hard time nailing everything I’m working on consistently…and this yo just feels like it’s fighting against me and making everything much harder…and it’s taking the joy out of things.
I was going to deal with the tilting…I thought it’d probably make me better in the long run cause it’d force me to throw straighter and working on keeping everything better under control during my tricks. but then my binds started slipping again, or it’d take me several attempts to get a bind.
This is the only throw I’ve been using for the past few days. I really want to like it.
But I’m done! /sad
I put it away and picked up my Duncan MKT…and damn! I immediatly started hitting all my tricks and started having a blast again! I went from frustration, to joy! lol…it’s SO much more stable, spins longer, feels better in my hand…and it’s binds are super snappy and give me zero issue at all (stock response).
I’m happy to own this yo. I very rarely have regrets on things I purchase for my hobbies. I’m happy to have this thing in my growing green collection…
But that’s where it’s going to stay for now. In my collection. It’s been too frustrating to use and that frustration is sucking the fun of throwing out of me.
I’ll pick it up from time to time. Who knows? Maybe as I become more and more skilled, the better I’ll be with the yo.
Does anyone else have issues with it tilting and with the response?
Two thoughts/suggestions
- Try using a fatter string
- Try putting in a non-flat bearing
After those changes, tell me what you think
Some yoyos benefit from a different setup. I really didn’t like my mantis when I first got it for basically the same reasons. Swapped out the flat bearing for a grooved concave and it was immediately more pleasant to play.
Hey thanks, I didn’t even think to switch out the bearing. I’ll give that a try tomorrow.
I don’t have anything thicker atm than my kitty fats…maybe I’ll pick a small pack of fatter strings sometime soon.
What other ODs do you have?
