Also, you will find that some yoyos are more unresponsive than others. This is part of what gives them their unique “personalities”. Some yoyos force you to be more intentional with binds, while others are more sensitive.
Don’t wash your hands of it just yet, just keep coming back to it. It might surprise you in time.
That’s part of the reason I was so excited to add this yo to my collection. It’s the first unresponsive OD I’ve picked up. The only other ODs I have are 3 Deep States (/love).
That’s the thing…the problem is very likely me and not the yo. I’m not done with the yo just yet. Not forever anyhow. For now I am, but I have no intentions of getting rid of it or anything. Hopefully as I become more skilled, the funner I’ll have with this yo.
Maybe I’m just not throwing as straight as I think I am…and I know full well that I’ve got a long ways to go with my binds.
Seriously suggest swapping the bearing with a centering one. It’s like night and day IMO. Feel like my ODs really shined after I started putting centering bearings in.
Okay…so I don’t want to type this out loud in the public.
So maybe I can type it, but then everyone can go ahead and pretend they didn’t read it? Then we can all move on with our lives like nothing ever happened.
I opened up my L. Terrarian to swap out the bearing.
Half the yo no longer had silicone…just an empty gap. >.<’ No idea how the silicone disappeared? Hasn’t happened on any other throw yet that I’ve siliconed. haha /DOH!
I’m obviously no genius…but I’m thinking that might have some small part in why I was struggling with my binds. xP I feel like such a silly dum-dum lol.
Threw the response pad back into that half.
Then I switched over to a duncan concave bearing.
WTH?
What kind of magic is this?!?
It completely transformed my yo!
I’ve just thrown it around for 30 minutes and holy damn! lol…it’s still a tiny bit tilty, but dang! Nowhere near what it has been these last couple of days! I was whipping through my tricks and combos with so much more ease with it! Even on a longer combo I’ve been working on that has lots of twirls and loop thingsy that I’ve been struggling like mad to keep the yo straight on the string with…ate right through the combo!
Can a bearing really make THAT much of a difference? I’m thinking it very well might be a placebo effect going on haha.
And obviously…it’s binding just fine now too! Not the snappiest binder I own, but more than workable. I think I’ll try to silicone the other half again for attempt #2…before the silicone vanished, the binds were damn snappy and satisfying!
So…I’m so not ready to put this yo back in my bag again now! I had a blast here just now with it! And heck…I even like that it’s a tiny bit unstable. I truly believe that it’ll force me to throw straighter and to work on being in better control during my tricks.
I really can NOT thank you enough Smiley! I honestly didn’t even think to switch out the bearing! Wouldn’t have crossed my mind!
I’m a bit in disbelief that it’s made such a difference! I mean…holy hell! xP
There has been tons of recent discussion on the bearing effect, flat versus concave.
I am curious though why you felt you needed to manually silicone a new yo-yo that came with brand new silicone stickers? That just seems like asking for extra problems, to me…
hehe I’ve slowly been switching all my throws over to silicone. I’m in love with how snappy and sharp my binds are with silicone!
Trial and error. I had an air bubble in the silicone on this throw (haha I can feel everyone rolling their eyes at me through my screen!). I think that’s what did it. It disintegrated.
When I got it brand new, it was a bit slippy for me (again, I’m quite positive it’s me, and not the yo). So I siliconed it. And damn, the next day after it had set…the binds were freaking awesome! They were immediate and I’m not sure how else to describe it…but “snappy”. I’ve had the same experience with each yo I’ve siliconed so far.
Sorry for the long reply lol…but that’s why I’m siliconing everything. It was a suggestion I got a few weeks ago, and I’m super happy to have taken the advice. I’m willing to put in the little bit of effort it takes…I’m willing to go through a bit of a learning curve before I get it just right.
You might find that in time, you will gain an appreciation for flats. But Yeah I was the same way when I first started out.
And maybe when you applied your silicone, you somehow didn’t get it all the way down into the bottom of the groove, basically forming a bubble in the bottom. Or maybe you didn’t allow it to cure long enough? Either way, that certainly is strange
Edit: yep, guess it was the bubble that caused the malfunction! I think we posted at almost the same time haha
It’s not just you with the terrarian feeling unstable. I’ve thrown with flat bearings for a very long time, I usually get along with them just fine. But I found both the OG and especially the legendary to be too unstable for my taste. Swapped in center track bearings in both. This did the trick with the OG, but the legendary was still kinda unstable, so I went to a grooved bearing. Much better.
Your next OneDrop give the flat a chance, you might find you like it. I’m a definite believer that you sometimes have to tune a yoyo until it suits you. In particular I’ve found this with OneDrops. The extent to which they respond to bearing, string and the type/condition of response or silicone just makes me appreciate them that much more.
Yeah the OD flat bearings seem to be a love/hate thing. I personally like them, but a lot of people aren’t fans. If you’re ever struggling with tilt on a OneDrop though, this is the first thing I would change.
Have you played with both the 18 and al7? I’m looking to pick up a green banshee as my next throw, and there’s a regular 18 one available right now…though I’m trying to hold off on the bomber edition al7 because I love the etching on it’s side haha.
If you have tried both…is it worth waiting for an al7 over a regular 18?
I’m in awe at how much of a difference the concave has made! I’ve been up all night and have sunk another hour into my legedary and it’s a completely different yo now. I was ready to put it away and let it start collecting dust! But the bearing swap has made it a fun yo!
