Should you re-silicone all your new yo-yos?

Time yourself. Go ahead:

  • Install silicone stickers, and time how long that takes.

  • Install flowable silicone, and time how long that takes. I’ll be super generous and say you don’t need to include curing time in the results.

It’s a ton more work for negligible benefit – and often negative benefit.

Others don’t seem to share this viewpoint:

I mean considering part of the reason we started this conversation is:

… which is exactly what’s described, “rips out easier.” It ripped out!

It is easy to mess up manual silicone. Heck even if you don’t mess up, it’s simply a manual process by its very nature; there’s more that is variable and can go wrong, even if you get it “perfect”. But it is virtually impossible to mess up silicone response stickers. You get instant perfectly flat, perfectly adhered, totally consistent silicone response, in under 60 seconds, every single time. That’s awesome.

Don’t misunderstand, I am totally supportive of manual silicone when you have to do it, when there’s no standard silicone sticker that fits, or your financial situation is so dire that $5 for silicone response stickers is out of the question. But again:

There is a very good reason we ended up with [standardized] silicone stickers as the norm in this industry, and not bare friction (ala classic wood yo-yos), starburst, or manual flowable…
