Once in a lifetime yo-yo collection for sale, California locals only

Oh interesting idk about consignment that’s why I suggested keeping it in house with a group of the most trusted and knowledgeable guys on here. Certainly eBay takes a percent where the community would save. So far I’ve got 5 guys PayPal $500 and then “nobody” owns them and there’s more legal obligation.

Again idk about consignment I just know this either hurts or helps the community so that’s why I’m putting my brain on it with group mentality in mind.

I would gladly say there’s def people here that are thieves or opportunists. I know I’ve dealt with it myself in my family so yeah I get that. But again with the gravity of this being the craziest event on these forums I’d like to believe there is an in house solution. I’m
Certain this community as a group would get the yo-yos in the best hands instead of eBay selling the identified price by Jeff to the next guy who will sell for a huge profit.

Idk again, spitballing here cuz this is NUTS

I was just thinking that I hadn’t seen you around much, Jeff. I hope you’re still throwing.

No doubt, but he’s selling his entire collection at ~$5 a piece – that absolutely insane! Pretty sure money’s not the issue here, lol. And the yoyo’s would go for a fair price to the community because it would be an auction. Not to mention the true value of the collection could go to a charity.

This is asking for trouble, but it is Jeff’s call. Personally I’d put them in storage for 1 year and reassess the decision, but that’s me.

Regardless, any other solution that directly involves 1-n community members is just people figuring out how to put themselves and their buddies in the best position to divide the spoils. Let’s just be upfront about that.

Personally I don’t care where it goes ultimately, because he’s got me thinking I should get rid of my collection now! haha.

How about put them in a big crate and push them off a boat in the middle of the ocean and say “oooops”
Or
National treasure type hunt.

All I know is this is epic, get the  popcorn  out peeps.

I got out the popcorn the moment I saw this thread drop. Knew a least a few days of entertainment lay ahead. But imagine… If the thread is such a circus, what are the DMs like overall? Godspeed, @codinghorror

OK! I think we have a tentative plan now.

@yoyodoc will be the caretaker of all these yo-yos and can handle them as he sees fit. He’s a legend in the community and he loves making dreams come true. Once they are in his hands I trust him completely to make whatever calls he needs to make, they can be his responsibility :hugs:

Mo is a worthy custodian indeed. Great call. Glad it worked out for both of you.

Thanks @edhaponik! I still love yo-yos but I realized I don’t need 500 of them for that love to endure

Making other people’s dreams come true… that’s where it’s at :hugs:

Ohh I didn’t understand the auction aspect I actually really like that idea.

And tbh when I mention the @s I’ve tagged they are people I don’t know at all I just see how they act on the forums since I’ve joined. So I don’t think the “committee within the community” concept lacks safety.

I 100% agree I would hold a year and reconsider. Idk Jeff but I know he’ll make whatever the best decision is.
I just wanted to give lateral thinking to maybe inspire a conversation that leads to the best solution.

I have no problem admitting when I’m wrong or agreeing when something is smarter. I really like the auction idea. I really hate eBay getting any proceeds or this having to leave the community cuz we’re too childish to take care of this in the absolute best way for the community.

I think continuous open forum discussion will provide the best route within the week so let’s keep the banter going with everyone.

With eBay what are the pros n cons? I’m
Ignorant to that system that’s why I ask. I know you stated some but would it be better than the community handling if we assume Jeff picks the best committee group person(s) to handle it within here (and let’s assume 100% that nobody is greedy and we do it as proper as it could be done just for the sake of this comparison) ((bc I truly truly believe the fact he’s taking a whole week to find the right person and what everyone says about him
And this continued conversation would 100% lead to an honest end game here))

The pros I see for the community is -

the images captured of each throw

Review and comparison Mecca that’s unseen here (granted Jeff could do this tonight if he stayed up all night so it could be done before gone to eBay)

The community is strengthened from the event itself

More communications get more people the Yoyo they want at a lower cost than auction assumably bc the break even $ figure would be figured before any of the throws are sold. So you might be willing to pay $100 for a grail on auction but with the logistics it might only be $50 cuz that’s all that’s needed to break even)

Cons - 2 people want the same Yoyo (can be solved but haven’t thought that out

The group of “friends” or whatever negative instance occurs and the community is stabbed in the back as a collective.

I’ll try to think of other avenues also but I feel the community idea is my strongest concept for us so far

I mean Mo has the capacity to straight up frankenstein 500 into about 30-40, depending on how he decides to splice them together.

(Kidding - Mo knows well enough which yo-yo’s out there are significant/important. He’s on a short list of people I’d trust to know the value of the ones I cherish.)

Fingers crossed for more double-mirror backdrop Mo mods. :crossed_fingers:

@codingnhorror good call man! Yoyodoc is definitely the right person to pass these too!

I would love to see a photo album/database of all the yoyos on a website. Once yoyos are sold and taken off the stores website, they basically disappear! I’ve been searching for old peak pics for a while now. We lost so much history when blogs were deleted and websites closed.

As It was said, I hope you continue to throw and enjoy this amazing toy that brought us all together!

Best reply yet. He’s a business man and knows what he is doing because he obviously did not just wake up and make a rash decision.

Man, I’m so glad this collection is going to someone you can trust isn’t just picking the collection up for personal gains.

My two cents:

It would be cool if this situation could benefit both the yo-yo community and some charity.

If all of these are cataloged and sold for what they’re worth, does the yo-yo community really benefit? (Obviously other than the benefit of being able to donate all of that money to a good cause).

Would be cool to see everyone be able to get their name on a list, randomly generate an order, 275 lucky people make the cut, and then we go through the order with each person getting to choose one yo-yo to buy for $40.

This way a ton of people get the opportunity to buy something cool for way less than retail, and we still raise thousands of dollars for charity.

Just a thought…

Fantastic conclusion, what an ending. :+1:

Yoyodoc is a sage amongst us.

Also Recess are traveling to schools at the moment, enhancing yoyo awareness and having fun in schools, great idea. Give the not so epic sub £xx throws to them or a similar process to distribute to the kids and the teachers that are kids at heart.
I’m hearing a lot of “best for the yo-yo community”
These are just toys at the end of the day, let the kids have them and throw them with reckless abandon.
They are beautiful Objet d’art with some design value but not all of them are lost civilization manuscripts or lost classical music 3rd movements.
Something like this would benefit the future “community”.
Good luck @yoyodoc, you’ll need it x
