New here-Give me some of your all time favorites, please!

Hey all,

My names TJ. Posted in the inteo thread recently and have been trying to engage in the few threads i can add anything to. Mostly lame jokes, but like i said, im real new to the hobby.

Ive been reading a ton om here, and the community you guys have built is phenomenal. And from the significant lifetime of this space, im sure there are a ton of great threads/videos/etc. that have come up over the years.

Ive done a good bit of searching, and come across some great, insightful, informative, and hillarious topics and posts. But the sheer volume is overwhelming and Im sure i havent scratched the surface.

So anyone with any Posts that stand out and you can find a link or give me something to search for, id really appreciate it.

Also, any videos, or instructional material, or really any resource at all that you think a green thrower should see would be great too. Anything you found useful, or entertaining, or helpful in progressing your skills, all of it. Anythung yoyo related that really stands out to you.

Thanks in advance to anyonr who takes the time to point me in the rught direction! Happy to be here!

Yo welcome! This is my favorite series about yoyo technique.

I don’t know where your skill level is at, but I think it is good for new players to go through yotricks first 50 tricks playlist also

You can also check out the trick a week thread on here where you can learn a trick each week and ask for help if you get stuck or just have any questions
(You can learn any of the tricks from past weeks and ask questions about those also)

Awesome, thanks for such a good reply!

I havent seen the first video before, so im going to check that one out today.

Ive been working my way through the list of 50. And theres only maybe 6 or 7 i havent been able to complete. And also only a very select few ive attained any sort of real command over lol. And to be honest, a few of those i havent gotten yet are due to not really trying more than once or twice. Just tricks that didnt appeal to me for one reason ot another.

Recently got cascade and have been building consistancy. The last pop and catch in the double is almist always the issue. Ill get it though.

Kwiyjibo, the Hook, and Pop n Fresh are really the only ones im missing and am very interested in learning.

Stuff like Cold Fusion, Buddhas, Matrix, and a couple new binds are my most recent accomplishments that im getting any real consistency with. The guy Wright bind and the sky? bind are getting dialed. Sky is goving me more trouble but coming along.

This rant is just incase anyone has any ideas on trick resources to give some idea of my (lack of) skill level lol.

But honestly, this thread isnt about me, hope it doesnt come across that way. Entertain me yoyo people!!@$!

Dont get me wrong, im absolutely interested in as much advice as i can get! Lord knows i need it.

And i had seen the Trick a Week thing, but the couple i saw first seemed way out of my league and i didnt realize the massive number of old posts that were archived in there. Will be digging im that thread for sure, thanks again!

But this whole scene is new to me and it all fascinates and entertains me. So whatever people find interesting or cool or funny or memorable in any way.

If you guys are willing to share it, Id love to check it out.

Nice yeah the first 50 list is really just a guide and you should definitely just skip around if that feels better like just learn whatever keeps you playing yoyo and excited really.

Also you should see if you have a yoyo club nearby. That is the best way to learn like having someone walk you through something irl

I recommend finding some quality Nylon string.

Pea Soup
Big Red
Red Panda
Zipline

All good brands. I know big red has free shipping. I really like their “thin” nylon. Longer spin times and less snagging than the “regular” nylon, which tends to be thicker than kitty fat.

Actually gonna be attending my first club meetup this Sunday in Chicago! Suuuuuper stoked for that. Im up in Milwaukee but were only a little over an hour north of the Windy City. Found the Chicago club searching on here a couple weeks ago. Initially for Milwaukee events, and it looks like there used to maybe be something here. Another thread where someone tried to get something going again last year bur from what i can tell it didnt end up coming to fruition.

But an hour drive is well worth it in my opinion. Really excited to meet some folks and learn some things and just enjoy ourselves. Been in touch with the organizervia their club IG page and he/she seems suuuuuuoer cool.

Gonna bring the 10-15 yoyos ive amassed in the month or two ive been throwing and open my case to anyone who wants to try anything. Talkedmy girlfriend into coming too! The promise of dinner in the big city afterwards really sealed the deal lol. I cant wait

I had really only played with Kitty fats untilreal recently. Got a Al6 and Al7 set of G2 Wraiths on here recently for a great deal. The seller was cool enough to include a couple of their diamond blend strings in the box, and WOW.

I really dig them, but im more shocked at just how much of a difference string can make. Like maybe as much or more difference than, say, a V shape to an organic makes if all else is the same. Maybe I’m talking out of my neck, as im super green and have very limited experience with all the different equipment options available. But it was night and day to me.

Do you know anywhere i could get an extensive sample pack of all the different main options? Ive seen a few samplers from specific companies, but that it. And those seem to be much less significant differences between the strings included. All vatiations of the same general concept yknow? Which seems great once I dial in what im even looking for and wanna narrow kt down from there.

But ideally like a Poly, and a Nylon, and a Cotton, and various blends of those. Maybe a few different widths and lengths too

Anything else besides material that makes a major difference in how different strings play? Obviously width and length are important, but it seems like material is wayyy more of a difference and idk if theres other big factors like that.

Still gonna use cheap bulk string for the large majority, but id like to keep a couple throws strung with something fabcy and different too.

Any and all string insight appreciated. Anyone PM me if cluttering this theead wirh my dumb stuff is a concern.

Please and thanks to you all who responded

Hey mate, nice to read of your new love affair with the yo. I’m a little over a year in, and still feel all ‘whirly girly’. Yoyo Rewind (Japanese retail outlet) has a huge list of nice short tutorials to check out. Plenty of ones out of my league, but some nice simple ones too. Also, don’t be too intimidated by big complex tutorials, a lot of what I throw are just small snippets of tricks I could no way get through, just elements or transitions I like and think I could manage, strung together. Nice work on the Guy Wright bind, I wish I had given that more attention early on. I only nailed it a few months ago and it’s become my absolute go to.

As I read this I quickly looked up ‘Cascade’ as also always on the hunt for new stuff to learn, and turns out I’ve been throwing if for a while as a poor man’s ‘black hops’ (another example of taking smaller bits of larger tricks, no way was I getting it from a triple, still can’t, but thought, alright, could probably manage from a double, and ran with that) Try starting with a Houdini mount for now, as having the first pass around the thumb really helped me with string seperation and control as I hoped back to double.(Houdini)

Stoked for ya to have a club an hour away! It’s a pretty lonely ol scene down here in Tasmania, south of Australia. I’ve met one other thrower from a few hours away, to buy some throws, and feel lucky for it. If your reading this @Yoyotradie, pull ya finger out and organise that meet!

Great to have ya about. Throw on homie!

Hey thanks for taking the time for a great reply!

Definitely still in the fangirl stage lol. Really hope it lasts a good long while. I have high hopes it will. Yoyoing can be super relaxing for me when im just throwing a trapeze and binding over and over trying to get my breakaway more and more dialed with maybe a quick trick or 2 ive got down every few throws.

But the excitement when sonething new clicks is something i don’t see ever getting old. And most of my limited progress so far has gone tbat way. Tackling something new, amd not really getting it at all for a bit, then slowly improving a little, buy still not close.

Then something will just happeb and ill realize what im doibg wrong, or an adjustment i try will work, and BOOM.

Now instead of being 10-20 percent there, within 5 more attempts after whatever epiphany, ill be 75-85 percent of the way to hitting a clean rep. That last little bit tends to take some days to a weekish to really polish up. But as soon as that AHA moment happens im fine with it, and it becomes part of my practice moving forward.

A lot of simple stuff too. This hand newss to be higher or lower, or maybe ill start to understand the difference between hopping to a differebt string rather than trying to “push” it there. Idk, something minor will click in my brain and immediate improvement follows and applies to other elements a lot of times too.

And thanks, Im way too excited to hit up the Chicago club tomorrow. Spoke to a couple peolple that saw me mention it. One here and one i reached out to on IG. Both of them were as cool as can be, which only increases the stoke level lol. I know im very lucky to have a regular meetup being hosted so close.

Im a bit surprised that its not more common, at least from what ive seen so far. I guess yoyo is a pretty niche thing, sure, but in the USA there are tons of cities with hundreds of thlusands of people, quite a few over half a million, and even 10 or so above 1 million. Just many many places Id think could scrape together a handful of people to kick it in a park or something once in a while.

Gotta be a matter of mkst folks not being willing to take on the job of coordinatinv/running the club. And i dont blame them one bit either. I kmow its nut a full time job or anything, but taking the time to secure a location, advertise and drum up interest on multiple platforms, post date/time/location every month, respond to questions and comments, etc is A LOT. More than i can honestly say I could handle consistantly.

Going to be sure to tell whoever fills that role at the one on Sunday that their selfless effort is MUCH appreciated

Thanks for the trick tut stuff too, man! Got a bunch of stuff to try and thats awesome.

Cheers,
Tj

YeeeeeeHaw!!!

Realllllyy hoping i can snag one of those t-shirts i saw on the post announcing the details for this month. Those thjngs are so sick! If you happen to know the young DaVinci Jr. who designed them and are down to forward my info to him/her so i can get in touch, id be eternally grateful lol. Told the guy hosting the event i was jnterested too, but if its possible to do myself its just one less thing to bug him for lol.

We’re going camling tonight up here in Wisconsin and its possible well be an hour or so late, so was gonna offer to cash app the artist incase they’re gone before we arrive. Thjnmjng way too much about a Tshirt, for sure, but they really are awesome lol.

Cant wait to meet the crew! Hoping the find a couple WI folks and maybr see if anyone is down to do something up here maybe two weeks from the Chicago one. Thinking thats a long shot, but fingers crossed.

Ive got 15ish throws since ive been going a littke crazy over the last month or so lol. Definitely gonna bring em all, and hope someone hasnt tried something i might have. I dont have any super rares or anything, but theyre all qualkty yoyos, so hopefully theres 1 or 2 some may not have had the chance to throw.

Chicka chicka yeeeeaaaaa
