Introduce Yourself!

Don’t think about the swing, just picture where you want the ball to go to. Kind of thing

I got up to 20 good loops 75% of the time and then I couldn’t do more than 2 each time. Now, if I use a responsive yoyo I will just attempt one loop here and there. I don’t even practice looping anymore. I’ve gotten really good at the fence though.

Hi,

I’ve been mostly using the Discord server but I figured it might be nice to check out the forums as well.
Assuming I didn’t write an introduction when I created my forum account I figured now is as good a moment as any to do so. Especially since I now have at least something to say about me and yo-yos.
If I did already write an introduction in the past, I have clearly forgotten that and this will be a great opportunity for an updated version.

So I’ve been throwing for about a year now. I had a knock off light up brain yoyo way back in the day (20 years ago maybe?) which I took apart (probably also about 20 years ago) and couldn’t really use again afterwards so gave up on the whole thing. So a year ago I suddenly wondered what happened to yoyos and if they had evolved at all and came to the shocking surprise that I’ve been missing out on 20 years of awesome history.

So I’ve trawled the web for all the advice I could find on what would be a good and cheap starter yoyo and settled for a Magicyoyo T5. Mainly to see if this hobby was something for me before I started investing more and on the other hand imagining that I could probably just stick with this single throw forever. In theory that thought would probably be true. The T5 can more or less do anything you throw at it, at least on a practice level and it’s about as sturdy as a tank. After a while I joined the forum here and the Discord server because I had some kind of question. That is where I first came into contact with the yoyo community and was happily surprised by the welcoming atmosphere and the laid back live and let live attitude that instantly made me feel at home.
I also started buying more yoyos to try different designs and to find out my personal preferences as well as to try out different styles.

My current findings are that I love cheap, strange, uncommon, mini yoyo’s, weirdly shaped throws and fingerspins. Especially extreme H shaped yoyos tickle my fancy. So things like the Yoyocontest Archmage and the Magicyoyo K9 score high. I do however value playability as well which I found out especially after procuring a beautiful red Aoda Popular which is all those things but has quite a terrible performance even though my particular one is as smooth as a silk wrapped pimp with an elocution fetish.

That should be enough for an introduction.

I’m returning to the yo-yo after a 20-year hiatus. Just dusted off my old Yomega Raider. I’d done a few looping tricks and then slowly let it go as the Raider became unresponsive. After some research the last few days, I now understand that I likely played the bearing dry and probably just needed to lube it a little, or learn to bind. Back then there was no YouTube / Instagram/ TikTok, and info was much more scarce. I’ve lubed the bearing and now understand the mechanics a bit better (starburst creates friction to grab / bind the string, trapeze can be a flying bind), and am landing a few tricks. I’m now in the market for a metal throw, looks like there’s no shortage of options… Heading over to the search box to get caught up.

Welcome aboard. There are so many amazing options that it can be overwhelming. You will soon recieve a dozen recommendations. People will ask you how much you want to spend. The YYE store allows to shop in a lot of price ranges. I wish you well on your journey, my friend.

Hello,
I’m stringKnot.
I’ve been a little active on the discord a while ago and stalking this forum a lot and thought it was time to make an account.

In January 2020, after googling how to fix my now deceased 2€ plastic yoyo (RIP), I discovered the world of modern yoyoing .
I still remember being both amazed and confused that people would put bearings in yoyos or that you’re supposed to make a slipknot with the string around your finger!

I can’t choose what I love the most about this hobby between picking up new tricks or simply looking/holding masterly-crafted pieces of engineering.
There’s just something so simple and satisfying about modern yoyos.
It’s also an amazing break from programming all day and doesn’t involve more screen time.

I’m still a noob and learn at a chill pace, finished (some other yoyo website) first 50 tricks list, and my favorite learned trick at the moment is black hops.

I like minimalism and keep a small-ish collection. I prefer to give away a yoyo to a friend rather than have two yoyos that play and look similar.

My top 3 throws that I play daily right now:

  • Ti-Vayder
  • SF Cadence ES
  • YYF California - Pulsar Edition (My EDC)

Everyday, I push the limits by inadvertently discovering new knots, some of which I thought impossible according to the known laws of physics. This inspired my nickname and avatar.

Looking forward to get better and share some tricks and pictures with all of you!
