u give away yoyos? can i have one lol
Hi. My name is Darren and Iāve been throwing on and off for many years now. Loved it as a little kid back when ball bearing yoyos were just getting popular and have stuck with the hobby watching it change over the years. Started with a Spintastics Torch and learned most of my basics on that. Now I enjoy tossing around on the more modern yoyos and am still amazed at how far yoyos have come. Favorite trick is boing-y-boing. Pleased to meet you all.
my name iz jeff
OMG my name is Jeff too
Heyy Iām Jonathan, I sometimes go by Jon but it doesnāt really matter.
I started throwing around the start of my 8th grade year, in fall 2017. Iāve only been to one contest, the Georgia State contest of 2017, and it hasnāt been held again after that. I plan on going to US nationals this year, but I might not.
I first got into yoyoing when I saw a Duncan yoyo at a Walmart. I grabbed a butterfly because it was the only blue yoyo there. I tried learning tricks but didnāt get too far on it. Soon I got knots and ended up buying another one. Eventually I got a ārealā yoyo, a yotricks Sage. (basically a responsive One Star) Yotricks was where I learned the majority of my tricks when starting out. My first metal was a Yotricks Canon, which I convinced my mom to get for me as a reward for studying for the 8th grade PSAT.
Even though I kept getting more yoyos, I ended up dinging and scratching a lot of them to the edge of usability. (concrete is not my friend)
I applied for and managed to get into a Magnet program (basically a nerd program (because I scored well enough on the PSAT lol)) where I started a yoyo club.
I yoyoed as a kid in the 80s, and had a yellow wooden Smothers Brothers/Kodak yoyo I loved. I was never very good. Fast forward to last summer when my six-year-old was fascinated with someone playing, so I got her a Yomega Brain, and myself a Raider. Imagine my surprise to find that yoyos now have ball bearings. And some didnāt come back up. She lost interest, but mine piqued, and now I enjoy yoyoing every day. Iām still not very good. Largely I yoyo on my walk in to campus, and enjoy unresponsive and responsive. For me itās a relaxing ritual, not a skill Iām devoted to developing.
I teach Physics at Xavier University, and there are lots of easily accessible physics topics relevant to yoyos. They make a great demo. My yoyoing has become a minor joke in the department, and a few students have taken up the hobby, at least until they move on to something else.
In my time here at the forum Iāve been blown away by the welcome and generosity of the members, particularly @codinghorror and @bobafret. Thank you.
Itās literally the job of college physics professors to be quirky, man! Iāve seen the documentary āReal Geniusā with Val Kilmer which proves this!
That public perception sure buys us some latitude. I always say that if your banker had two different shoes youād walk out the door, but if a physicist does you assume theyāre brilliantā¦
Hello all,
My names Mark iām 54 and from the UK. Not very good but enjoying learning. Fave trick is stop ānā go. Trying to learn loops but stuggling.
Hello,
I have been throwing off and on ever since I got my first Duncan Imperial in Jr High. My first serious yo-yo was a Yomega Raider in 98 until I got my first Bumble Bee GT.
The Raw Fusion, is my favorite unique yo-yo.
YYJās Black Knight, is my coolest looking yo-yo.
My go to yo-yo is my Freehand 2, but then I think I am partial to Playmaxx era body style of yo-yoās.
I found this site when I decided to get back into yoing and found that Daveās Skill toys was gone. So Iām not sure how far out of the loop I am. Just an example, I thought it was awesome when I found out that Evan Nagao won the Worlds. I first heard of him when I set my VCR to record him on the Tonight Show with Leno when he was 4.
Iām receiving my first YYF yo-yoās this week. I got the ONE starter pack and the Confusion GT. I am hoping that the Confusion GT will play like the Cold Fusion. I have long since given up getting one from Ebay.
Look forward to this old dog learning some tricks and talking with everyone.
Hey @Blaidd_Drwg!
Welcome to YYE, we have a pretty good bunch here. Youāll find that there are some of us who remember Daveās Skill Toys and some of the past forums.
Feel free to ask questions, comment, and lurk, (thatās my job, lurking mostly.) Glad you found your way here.
Regards!
holy crap. Talking to and looking through the yoyo community feels like exploring relics of the past
Hey peeps Iām Graham. Iām a relatively new thrower - was actually introduced to it by @SpyseaRice - only slightly over a year.
I got my first metal/unresponsive way too early in retrospect, about the same time I mastered the throw, but I didnāt know better at the time. (A Beboo L1 if anybodyās curious)
Iām in the same magnet program as @SpyseaRice and help him run the yoyo club there.

Even though I have been out of if, it feels cool. back when I started getting active with online forums and constantly checking Ebay for yo-yoās I never felt any connection with old yo-yoās like old wooden Duncanās and such.
But now when I am checking Ebay I have a connection with alot of them since I remember them being for sale on the online stores. Or at the local Kite shop remembering holding the Tom Khun SB2 in my hand but couldnāt justify at the time buying it.
Just like Iām sure there are people on here that havenāt played with a Turbo Bumble Bee GT, and Iām sure in less than 15 years from now, there will be people on here that will have never thrown a YYJ or know what āYYJā stands for.
But one thing is for sure, lurking through this Forum I have full respect for the Yo-Yo community that I may not have had back then.
Yeah, every moment now is yoyo history in the making. I saw a yoyo documentary about a week or two ago called āWorld on a Stringā, which was about the experienced of players competing at the 2010 WYYC, which was insane. Itās weird seeing people competing in the past that make it big on the modern stages. All these archives are a real treasure.
Whatās up everyone! Iām Davis, Iām 18 years old and Iāve been yoyoing since I was 9-10 (5th grade). Iām one of the co-founders of Tropic Spins (which, unlike me, didnāt survive high school). Iāve been out of the yoyoing game for a pretty long time, and Iāve recently been getting more into it as I transition from High School to college. Iām from Massachusetts, so if you live around here Iāve definitely seen you at one of the YoyoExpert Throwdowns or at NER / MA States.
Iām a CS student at UIUC (or, I will be this fall) and I canāt wait to hopefully start TSYC back up again as a nice side project. It feels good to be back in the yoyoing community after being away for so long!
