Haha, ^^ thanks for putting together a colour chart for me
Would you say that this was an endgame yoyo?
Lol sorry for the corny joke
I do quite enjoy a nice baby pink string
I am leaning on the brown at the moment more than the gold as a little throw back to my brown project yoyo. 15 hours left to finalise a decision.
As for strings, this is how I arrived at the choice without actually trying so this is just a on paper decision.
So back then there were obviously some boutique strings already, tried some liked it. Had less disposable income than now, so decided to stick with the bulk Yonation highlights (I lied, having just had a look I think I have about 50 left not 200+ looks like I went through strings faster than I thought I did).
Back then thick strings were not really a thing, or maybe I just wasn’t aware but not to my knowledge anyway. And I always thought to myself wouldn’t slightly thicker string be cool? I feel like I would like a little extra string thickness.
(Also I used to sometimes add an extra loop of string on the bearing for a little more grip on binds when the yoyo gets weak when doing longer tricks while using a KK bearing)
Fast forward to 2019, I found that thicker strings are now actually a thing. Got super excited, and read up on so much about yoyo strings. I have actually been lurking quite heavily on here and r/throwers on Reddit the past week.
(Lol imagine, “how was your weekend, do anything interesting?” “Yeah it was awesome! I spent hours researching different types of yoyo strings!”)
So I’m at a point where I don’t mind paying a little extra for slightly more premium strings than bulk yonation highlights (nothing wrong with those by the way) but I am not good enough that I would appreciate super premium strings like ziplines, airetics, markmonts etc. So YYSL strings seemed the perfect median and seemed very well recommended as something a bit better than kitty, not quite zipline etc.
And from my research it seemed to suggest for thickness from thin to thick (roughly) :
- kitty slim
- kitty standard = type X / venom = yonation highlights
- kitty fat = plutonium
- kitty xl = ammo
- kitty xxl
So with the intention to order either ammo or plutonium when I buy my first metal on yoyoexpert as part of the basket to save on shipping. When I bought the Dove yoyo from a local UK store (yoyovillage) I bought a pack of kitty xl and a pack of kitty fat to try.
Tried the XL first for my 3 hour session on Thursday. liked it, but had me feeling this might now be a bit too thick.
Yesterday I tried the kitty fat for just over an hour and I think it’s perfect for my preference (at the moment) a little thicker than standard as I always wanted back in ‘07 before they were a thing. But not as thick as kitty xl.
I know these are quite subjective and personal preferences and this is mine at the moment.
So that’s why I decided on the plutonium
I just went through and read all of the comments here. So many fantastic posts. Glad to see you getting back into it and your already miles ahead of many here. I too am a huge fan of One Drop yoyos and there are so many in thier lineup alone that are amazing. The Vayder is good but very different from what many consider modern performance. For me I still carry it often because it feels great and is a bit smaller and tough as titanium.
That said, comments about not choosing based on aesthetics are crazy. You do have 100s of great yoyos, most perform extremely well. So it comes down to comfort and anesthetics. If you like it you throw it. If it looks off to you you probably won’t. So good on you for getting what you want.
Like I said I’m huge on One Drop and the VTWO is all performance. They have great shapes that all perform well but if the V is your thing than it doesn’t get much better. The brown finish is also good looking, has class to it.
As far as YYSL, I would get the sample pack. Try the Type X and the Plutonium. Not only is it about feel in the hand but how it binds. You may like the Plutonium better but find it grabs a bit to early or too much. The type X maybe not enough. I like both but some throws handle it differently.
Good luck and of course keep us updated.
This my current One Drop lineup. I do have 2 VTWOs one not in the pic, 2 Gradients, 2 Parlays, and 2 Sugar Gliders.
One more more thing, I apologize for the multiple post…sorry not sorry.
One of the things I truly admire about @da5id and the One Drop brand is they are designer and manufacturer here in our home country (may not have the same impact for you obviously). They produce the highest quality product and other brands seek them out to manufacture as well. But they are not just designing and outsourcing. Not a knock on other just a notch for them.
I’ll try giving my 2cents.
150-200$ is a great budget that could get you lots of great stuff. If you want to take advantage of the Halloween sale I would consider buying stuff you can’t get on European shops. Yoyoexpert probably has the largest selection of international and boutique american brands which rarely makes it overseas. My personal recommendation (which I do own myself) would be the 2sick endgame and the c3yoyodesign cybercrash. The endgame is a highperforming bimetal with sleek looks. Very stable, longspinning, wide for easy catches and also nimble on the move. You can check out some reviews on YouTube to see how they look like closeup. The Cybercrash is a great performing monometals with some colorful anodization which is also easygoing on the wallet. Light and nimble feeling with solid stability and you don’t have to fear for dings as this is a budget throw.
Also you are probably aware of this but import tax and custom fees can sting if you get it shipped to Europe.
Thank you sir for all your thoughts on this topic.
Additional comments and different peoples opinions like this helps me a lot.
Yeah I like the one drop browns, they give this effortless elegance look that makes it look more grown up and less kiddy. And helps me be less shy/self conscious of carrying it around and using even in front of other people. That’s one more thing I loved about the project, and part of my lust which I now fulfilled for a milky white delrin yoyo back then.
- Edit -
Also the sample pack is already in my cart, so that I can narrow down my selection. If I end up picking up 50 strings of the wrong one (say I picked up some ammo and plutonium, and realised I prefer venom or type x it’s no big deal as these are consumables anyway and I can order the one I preferred more next time round after I run out. Although ideally I get it right the first time
Also thank you for your kind words
You and others who commented similarly above gave me a boost of confidence, motivating me to keep throwing. (Not that I already ran out of motivation yet but more the better)
This is great advice, thank you.
I didn’t think of custom fees and tax but I guess this is unavoidable anyway. Someone bought my old bumblebee last night for £23 on eBay so that will be my custom fee.
Totally agree about capitalising on this opportunity both in terms of sale and shipping from the states. But then again almost anything I buy will be from the states as the choices here are super limited so I don’t think this matters much and I’ll just get one for now instead of being overloaded with new things to try and in the end having things neglected and not getting use (compared to say, getting something new every so often, vs getting them all at the same time)
Just a word of warning, if you do decide on getting a Vayder, the customs charge will be steep as it is a high value item. I found this out. Great yoyo though.
Oh that might put it a little out of reach then in terms of budget. May need to reasses. Thank you for the heads up
@codinghorror, if I bought a Ti-Vayder would you be able to label as a toy gift, and mark the value down for custom fee purposes? Totally understand if you don’t feel comfortable with this but thought I would ask anyway.
How much did you have to pay in customs?I am thinking about getting it and I’m in Europe as well
He said he can’t since who ships the yoyo considers it illegal:)
Update :
This is my cart currently as of now.
- lube will stay as is
- the response pads will stay as is (1 pack of 4 OD pads, 1 pack of 4 slim OD pads)
- the YYSL sampler pack will stay as is
- VTWO in brown, could change still going back and forth a little but this is my choice as of this moment
- bearings put a couple in for now in different variety, 1 Sochi concave, 1 NSK CT, 1 YYR DS in stainless. Might remove some and just keep one only and currently leaning on the DS one. As I already have a YYF CT bearing I think in my dove, and tried KK before. (As I understand it the DS by YYR are also made by NSK micro anyway)
- Strings put a bunch in cart for now, will add and remove as needed to get the total close to $177 which brings the total to $150 after the Halloween discount as that is the threshold for free international shipping.
I figure the less I buy that isn’t essential, the more reason to buy again sooner haha. So no need to go overboard now
That is totally fair and as expected, thank you for letting me know
I bought two, one for me and one put away for my son when he’s old enough.
I can’t remember what shipping was, but I do remember people complaining about it and the shipping price was lowered, this was after I had already placed an order.
The customs charge for me was £55 on top of the yoyos and shipping.
Nice yoyo though.
Thanks for letting me know:)
Ah so I’m probably looking at around £30 for just the one. So roughly £150 all in. Hm I think that is still doable.
What colour did you get out of interest? I am eyeing the grey one although Vayder black and all lol
