Just my 2 cents, but I think the reason you see so many CLYW throws on the BST is because of the resale value. When people are looking to “make some money” off of their throw collection, they can almost be guaranteed that they can sell their CLYWs for good money.
I still find it interesting that so many collectors would rather have the money than the CLYW yoyo(s).
Indeed, I like this analogy with music. Also, earlier on in a creative band or brand’s development there can be a naivete to what they’re doing. Their self consciousness about what makes them “special” hasn’t fully codified yet so there’s a certain excitement to it where you don’t know what direction they will take next. That excitement is difficult to repeat later, once they’ve figured out their magic formula, and the naive energy fades a bit.
At the same time, I respect that a new audience can come in at different phases and that “their” version of the thing (band’s music or yoyo company’s yoyos, or whatnot) can still be good, though different from the earlier phases.
Also, to be fair to CLYW, a lot of yoyo companies went towards making super smooth more competition-oriented designs (and manufacturing in China) at a similar time. This is funny to think of in retrospect since we have so many organics coming out now. For example, my bi-metal organic made in China PDX Batsquatch 7068 is pretty killer so I’m definitely not complaining about the different waves of yoyo trends.
Good call on the Mr. Zog’s - works a treat and doesn’t leave a sticky mess. Although I did have to answer a few questions about why I was buying something called ‘Sex Wax’…
I’ve been throwing a lot of 5a lately, probably half of my yoyo time if not more. I’m not sure if that will continue but we’ll see. I think I’ve figured out my attachment to it is that there is a bit more physicality involved, as well as a sort of natural rhythm to the movement.
1a can be like that but the movement can be a bit chaotic at times. You’re often more directly/completely manipulating the movement of the yo-yo and string, while in 5a I often feel as if I’m just setting the yo-yo/cow into movement initially and then guiding that momentum.
Not a hard rule just a general perception of the feel of each style to me, and not saying one is better or worse. Probably why 1a freestyle music can be rough for me sometimes lol.
I really like 5A because of the cw. It’s really handy not having the throw tied to your hand, especially in line. Being able to grab the throw from your pocket and instantly begin throwing appeals to me for some reason. Can’t explain it.
I don’t play 5A, but I entirely get what you mean about putting the string on finger. Sometimes the few seconds that takes is the difference between a quick throw when you have just a short time. It’s such a tiny barrier, but makes the difference more often that I would think.
I don’t 5a but I like the clacking sound of the cw. I’ll settle for watching 5a videos for now.
Hey guys, I have a question, I’m playing with my Wedge and I noticed that it is starting to snag and getting responsive, no bearing loud sounds, just responsiveness. Why that happens? Maybe string lint goes inside the bearing?
I find it interesting that a 4.5mm gap was considered “a bit wide” in 2019. Today it seems that anything under 4.62mm is considered narrow, and you have to get to about 4.8mm before it is considered wide.
I guess this coincides with the overall trend towards wider yoyos. These days a yoyo under 46mm is practically considered a slimline. (I’m joking, but only kinda.)
Apparently color of a yoyo drives my impulse to buy it - had pulled the trigger on another SPYY Spyder II, this time the blue/silver half-swap version. I already own a Spyder II (Love this thing) in purple, but seeing it in the contrasting blue/silver just made me want to get a second one.
I still seem to be stuck in the 2010s in the past year or so where undersized was common…lately been preferring to play smaller throws

Things to do if you are stuck in a creation rut:
1a:
Yo-yo more incorporating the hand you use less for string manipulation. Focus on using primarily that hand instead.
Find a position/mount you’re in a lot. Do 4 or 5 different things from that mount than you usually do.
Yo-yo to music.
5a:
Again try using your non dominant hand more. Also try using only one hand and only your shoulder, wrist etc on the other arm.
And then the same tips as 1a.
i find throwing to music, and then changing up the types of music i’m throwing to (hiphop, drum and bass, house music, punk, hard core…) helps me
Maybe I’m just old fashioned but I honestly prefer just plain white strings on all my throws. Don’t get me wrong all these colors are cool and all but just something classy about a regular white string
here here! i prefer white strings through and through, and stay consistent with a string. but, i’m using a different string on a lot of my throws right now, so i’m
using a bright for that one…
Not everyone here is super cool and knows every single yoyo. If your yoyo has no identifying markings please mention what yoyo it is when you post a photo of it. All the non-cool forum members will be very grateful.
If you haven’t tried Zipline I highly recommend you will not be disappointed. Imho they are almost on another planet compared to most granted they are a bit pricier
