Yeah, the hubstacks alone are fun. But I honestly didn’t care for the yoyo to which they were attached. Someone has since given me an 888 GT that I do like more.
I agree the 888 GT, which really should have been called the Confusion GT except they had already used that name for the Confusion butterfly shape, was the better hubstack yoyo. I replaced the tiny hubstacks with the ones that fill the whole cup until I got used to what hubstacks could do. I see the 444 hubstack version but am unwilling to pay retail to try it. I would guess that the lighter 444 is better then the Skyline but not as good as the 888 GT.
Even though I don’t like the Skyline, I still want to try an 888 at some point. The 888 feels like it has a legendary history to it, where the Skyline is just a somewhat similar yoyo people also liked from the era. The 888 GT also feels cool in a similar way to the 888, because of how legendary the Cold Fusion/GT are. The DNA seems like the stacked yoyo I’d enjoy the most though, I actually only own one yoyo that’s under 55mm diameter if that says anything about modern preferences lol.
With what you described about stacks though, I can pull start on spikes into a flashy regen and that honestly feels cooler to me. Stuff like lifting the yoyo up into a finger spin or to change the spin direction also works well enough with a good set of spikes. Obviously stacks are better at these things, but they’re also elements I almost never want to use.
Don’t get me wrong I think stacks are cool on paper, but they just exist in an extreme niche as far as modern yoyo goes. I’d recommend modern performance driven yoyos in the same price range as the Skyline before it, even at 20 bucks. For people wanting to jump into the hobby now and do modern and more meta stuff, they’ll just be able to do more with modern yoyo designs.
I want a mutant DNA so bad and I see where you’re coming from
I’m really enjoying the Tropic Alien. A good example of the “performs well, but also chill” type of yoyo that’s very stable, long spinning, and comfortable in hand. Solids are $49.99 and available right here on YYE.
5a shutter is now on sale for $40. A really underrated throw.
How about the “Wedge” from YYF? $20 ON YYE. Great plastic player. Good spin time, nice shape, color choices are ok, not great. But for $20, I think it’s a great budget throw for people looking to go unresponsive.
Brought mine to work today…
