I want to get more serious with 4a, but I am having some trouble. I only have a flight and it’s great for the basics but regens and open string binds are giving me trouble. I am also having trouble with snagging yet some binds don’t catch. Do you have any tips on string length, string thickness, and anything that could help me with those intense open string/sky bind regen combos?
What is your favorite trick picture?
When did you first start designing logos?
Who’s your favorite Bryan?
Ok lets see now.
The iconic Black styling for Unknown was originally something that also grew into what it is now. Im not a fan of splashes or fades. I love the way they look cant stand to play with them for some reason when the yoyos are spinning the splash makes my eyes hurt from the constant color changes, for me its almost like a strobe light effect on a yoyo. I wanted Unknown to be minimal and clean designs so the best option was Black. At the time black yoyos didn’t really sell that well especially for competition purposes. Paul Escolar was also a big factor in making them solid black he said minimal is hard to do and with the name Unknown, you have to do black.
There have been other colored Unknowns but those are even rarer there has been a Gold FiReal and Gold origami there was also the Black and Blue General Yo.
I do have some ideas that are sitting because the right yo-yo or collaboration hasn’t happened yet. But it’s mostly all designed at the moment.
The UN logo was created by my fascination with ambigrams and minimal logo design.
The amount of support Unknown has gotten is unbelievable. I am truly honored and thankful that people love the weird designs that I release. There is even a couple of people who have gotten some UN artwork tattooed on them and that’s crazy!
The following for unknown never gets old and I love it. The little community that it has is very helpful too. I have seen people trade different unknown models in order to get what they wanted or seeing other help people track down a specific model. I have also seen some UN yoyos go for crazy prices but that’s just the bst for you.
I don’t see myself leaving JT anytime soon. When I joined YYJ in 2007 yoyojam was at the top of the 4A market with the Aquarius winning pretty much every yoyo contest. Then when JT released the Kamui it changed the game forever. I always looked up to JT because they are a 4A manufacturer first.
If my daughter Sophie does become interested in yoyos I will 100% support her. But ill do that with whatever she wants to do. She does like to take my yoyos and pretend she is yoyoing its really cute.
Thank you!
Was there a particular trick that you learned that got you hooked when you started? Almost everyone has or tries a yo-yo as a kid, but for people reading here, something clicked that kept them playing beyond the first few tricks. Any memories for you like that?
So for offstring I cut my string from belly button to the floor just as soon as the tip of the string touches the floor. I also prefer KittyString Fat for offstring because it gives me better binds and regens. A clean bearing also helps a lot in an offstring yoyo.
Banana for sure. https://www.instagram.com/p/CVEWkueJ6ho/
I have always been interested in logos but didn’t start to design logos till 2009
These answers were even better than I was expecting! :))
I love all Bryan’s even the ones who misspell it with an “i”
I remember learning brain twister and stop n go and never looking back.
I thought I was the coolest person doing brain twister and stop n go on my kickside
What’s your favorite Japanese food?
Favorite sushi spot in Japan?
I’m interested in trying to get into 4a but I’m not sure where to start, where would a good play to start be? (Yoyo, beginner tutorials, etc.)
What is your favorite color for yoyos?
How did you come up with that really cool slacky whippy bind where your string makes a circle whip from right to left and ends in a bind? (Was it an accident, where you inspired by someone else?)
I really like Ramen, especially Tsukemen. I also want to go back to this amazing little spot that Kentaro took us to for Yakitori and fried chicken. There is also this great Katsu place we found and we can’t forget to go to the sumo wrestler soup place!
Do you do anything special for setup? String Length? (actual length, please) Do you experiment with these variables often?
Do you have another Gull Wing that I can buy off you?
So I highly recommend picking up my signature yoyo TRUENO it’s really well designed and a great place for those who are just starting and or have plenty of experience. There is lots of 4A tutorials on the YoYoExpert youtube page @AndreBoulay can probably link to them here.
As for the bind it came from me playing around and doing a pinwheel trick that just happened to bind. Its really fun to do when you get the timing down. Here is a tutorial - https://www.instagram.com/p/CI6uisehneN/
My favorite color for Offstring yoyos is White for competition and Black to practice.
My setup for Offstring is a clean bearing.
Fresh Pads.
Kitty String Fat - 40~41 in
I dont have another Gull Wing lol
What is your best yoyo memory, most vivid yoyoing memory and time when you vividly remember doing something in a competition that you KNEW wouldn’t work… and it did.
