Amateur Yo-Yo Photography

Thanks! I was originally aiming for “crackling with magical power”, but any pattern of waving my lights around just liked like garbage. So I opted for the smoothness of dangling the light from a string and letting it spin around the yoyo.

That Smooth Move looks SICK!!!

Ok so here is my amateur setup… White paper up against a picture frame in my basement on an ironing board!! I have one of those huge flourescent lights overhead (the ones that are in offices)

two pics to show the contrast…

^ good way to improvise, and you’re using a cellphone camera, so you’re doing it on the cheap and getting good results. Photo came out nice!

I have a dilemma. I decided to buy a new camera. I have two batteries for my current camera, an Olympus FE340. Both batteries no longer hold a charge. I am disappointed with the lack of a manual white balance feature on my camera anyway, so instead of buying new batteries, I decided to buy a new camera. I’m taking pictures up close and still want to keep my investment for this on the cheap. I think the batteries are dead from lack of use over the last several years, so I just want great photos for throws. I am otherwise satisfied with my iphone camera. I also own a Sony Handycam, and have video on my iphone, so I’m not preoccupied with the quality of video capability on the camera. I just need something that takes great photos, custom white balance feature, stuff for the things we’re doing here. I am looking at several point and shoot cameras, Nikon Coolpix, Canon Powershot, and so on. It looks like I can get what I want without spending a lot. I’ll keep you posted about what I decide to buy. If you have a suggestion for a camera, please post.

You definitely can’t go wrong with a Nikon Coolpix. I just got a Nikon Coolpix S6300 for Christmas and it’s great. 16 megapixel pictures, 1080p video. The list price is $200, but almost every store I’ve seen it at has it less than $150. I believe Target has several Coolpix cameras, all under $150.

Good ones man! Looks like that ironing board might have a cool look if it was blurred in a background?

I’m not up on new cameras very much or would offer an opinion.

Wow MrSquirrel, you may have found the perfect model. I looked at all the specs, and found it online, in the color I want, free shipping $127. I was getting confused, with all the model numbers and letters. This one looks great. I will likely buy today, hoping to get it mid-week to play with on my next off day. I will keep you updated.

Update…found it for $119 free shipping.

Thanks for sharing your yo-yo photo with us TurboChicken

I have an update:

I got the Nikon S6300 that Mr.Squirrel recommended. It had all the specs I was looking for. I received the camera (blue one) and it was more of a purple, and part was blue, so it was 2 different colors. No big deal though, I just planned to use the camera for stuff around the house. Then, I discovered it did not have a standalone charger. The battery charges inside the camera. Not ideal because I usually use 2 batteries, so one is always charging while the other is in use in the camera. I realized I’d have to buy the charger, sold separately, or charge one battery at a time in the camera. That was not a big deal either because the charger is only $13. But, I ended up returning it for the following reason. I use a tripod, and due to the position of my light box, I end up zooming into the box, in macro mode, to snap the photo. The Nikon S6300 would only take the photo and focus if I took the camera off the tripod and actually held my hands in the box, really really close, which gave me a bad angle. I was so used to being able to shoot a certain way with my other camera, that this one was not going to work. I was able to return it though. Thanks Mr. Squirrel, it was a great camera, just not for my setup.

Instead, I got a Canon Elph 110hs, a bit more expensive, but it has the specs, and the custom white balance feature I was looking for. I just didn’t think I was getting accurate color with my last camera. But, I realize now that my old camera, the Olympus EF-340 was a very, very good camera, it just lacked the custom white balance feature.

after…using custom white balance with the Canon Elph 110hs:

The second photo accurately reflects the color I see on the yo-yo. The first picture, the red almost seems orange. I am happy with the Canon Elph, great camera so far, and still below $150.

Thumbs up, Totalartist!

Speaking of light painting…

It does look better and more red. Nice. I’ve read somewhere that Canon’s meter does a slightly richer red/purple while Nikon’s does a bit richer yellow/green. Sure did well on the red splash! Plus new camera fun!!!

Nice lights Logi!

Some throwback Dew…

Logi, that’s some cool stuff!

beherenow: that red is killer. Canon oversaturates the red, but you can either tame it or take advantage of it as you see fit!

Latest throw in my collection:

I love the Mountain Dew post. And I noticed Greg working with a shadow in the Lesula post, something I have not tried yet. I am noticing Canon has very rich reds and blues, which I love, but it depends on the shade. I did a short photo shoot pairing cubes and throws:

I like the reflection in the mirror cap…

That is awesome, Totalartist. Composition skills really coming along!

For the Lesula, I was getting a shadow the way I had it set up, and I had to decide whether to fart around softening/reducing the shadow, or just reposition the light to place the shadow in a more pleasing way. I obviously went for the latter. Semi-accident, but glad you picked up on it!

Nice shadow work and neat yoyo x2!

Great match up with the Cube! Nice rich colors. Good reflection too. I liked to pose things in my blades reflection in the light box! ;D

YAY, I just bought a nikon d5100!
