3YO3 Logo Design Contest!!!! Win an Al5 :)

I’ve been working very hard on a new logo for 3Yo3 to enter into this contest. I’ve gone through a fair amount of preliminaries and scrapped ideas before finalizing the one I’m showing. Creating something that captured the essence of the brand, becoming more sleek and recognizable, was a fun challenge.

One thing that I have observed from the publicly posted entries, while very well done, was that nearly all of them left out an icon of 3Yo3’s namesake: the Roland TB-303. I figure this is important to preserve in a new logo, lest the context for the name itself be lost. Using visual elements from the synthesizer’s construction, I used various shapes and colors, jumbled them into a new, yet still recognizable, form, and combined it with the typography to create a cohesive whole.

For reference:

I’ve also created many halftone, greyscale, and transparent versions for black and white printing, simplified emblems, and of course engraving.

Example of the halftone:

Your logos are really good! @patrickcondon and you have a point, 3yo3 may be named after or have gotten it’s name through the TB-303 doesn’t mean that the logo has to been 100% around the TB-303 because 3yo3 is a yoyo company :stuck_out_tongue:

Like if someone made a yoyo company called Aloc (Cola backwards) wouldn’t necessarily mean that the logo would have to do with Cola.

Not trying to start anything, just saying my opinion : O

I actually didn’t know 3yo3 had anything to do with the TB-303, I learned something new today.
Good luck with your entries though!

Awesome, Patrick!
Those are all fresh and unique. Really well thought out. I was also not aware of the origin of 3yo3’s name. Is there more behind the story? I’d like to know how a yoyo company was inspired by the music industry.

This isn’t where I originally learned of this (I could have sworn it was on Landon’s site, including numerous posts he’s made on forums), but SingaporeYoyoing has a teeny little interview with Landon back in 2010 that mentions it.

Also worth mentioning is that the Ceephax is named after Ceephax Acid Crew, known for TB-303 work. And the Bassline gets its name from the Roland TB-303 “Bass Line”.

With how much influence this all has on Landon’s company image and naming conventions, I feel it greatly important to preserve it in a new logo. Thanks for liking it so far, fellas. Glad I could also provide a bit of a learning experience.

I’m not sure this is a winner but this is just a warm up.

What color scheme are you looking for? I’m guessing black and white.

Whatever you’d like to do will be great! We can always turn it into black/white for engraving purposes etc

Meh, double post.

Here is my design just finished it.

Really impressive, Jimmyjamma!

Patrickcondon: amazing integration of the synth into the logo. Brilliant use of the letter shapes to create a keyboard.

That means a lot to me, that you like it Jack thanks.

I actually like this concept, probably even better if it were just the opposed 3’s in that shape and nothing else. I don’t see why the logo would need to incorporate every element of 3y03’s name, so long as there was a major element of it included. The dual 3’s still says 3yo3, to me, and the fact that it looks like a yoyo suggests the “yo” element without having to be literal. Really clean.

Patrick’s is also very nice. I understand what the little red led’s are doing in there with regard to the synth, but I wonder if they’re working in the design. It doesn’t look bad, but maybe a little busier than it needs to be? I dunno. I might like them better without the reflection smudge. Still very good. I like the last, circular border one the best.

WOW! :o

Yeah I actually like it better without the “y o” on the 3’s It can always be changed. I’ll try to email a version without them to Landon real fast and hopefully all goes well.

Just wanted to share the two I came up with! Wanted to keep it simple

Here’s a version without the “y o” I accidentally deleted my version without them so I had to remove them and decided to make it darker hope you guys like it :stuck_out_tongue: You can still tell where the y and o were at if you look close enough but still looks good I think.

@Elluzion Those are really good

Thanks.

As far as the design goes, this is as simplified as it’s going to get. The presence of each and every shape is absolutely essential to the design. If an element did not belong, or was redundant, it was removed. For example, I experimented with multiple dark grey areas as opposed to just the one above the Y for a brief moment, and concluded that it was not required for recognition and was removed, even if it abstracted from what a TB-303 actually looks like. I’d say as far as composition and balance are concerned, this is fairly clutter free.

Without the lights, people that I showed this to initially had no idea what they were looking at. With the lights, while small, garnered enough attention to serve as a context clue to identify every other element in the design, giving an identity to the buttons, and the shape of the keys beneath.

I do actually have a copy of it without the reflections, though. I’ll upload it for ya.

Definitely prefer it without the reflections. I think it was because nothing else in the composition is 3D, or even very round, so those lights were just sticking out like a sore thumb from a stylistic perspective, to me. This is a lot better.

I finally got to sending my own entries, and I paid some attention to Landon’s avatar picture here on the forum, seems he’s fond of guitar picks and the likes. Here they are:
