Zorro's 2014 Freestyle Contest

Title is really not of that much importance. It just looks good having them be about the same.

Registration is still open until Saturday. If anybody else wants to join, go ahead.

Hey, everyone, I am backing out of 5A for a few reasons:

1)I am still new to the style so: a. I donā€™t stand a chance, b. I donā€™t really have enough for a good 1-minute freestyle.
2) I want to judge it

You are so new to the style that you donā€™t want to compete yet you want to be a judge? Seems counterintuitive.

What I was thinking. If anything you want to compete first.

A small number of experienced judges is always better than many inexperienced judges.

i want to judge ;D

Hereā€™s mine. I wouldā€™ve made a cleaner freestyle, but unfortunately, I have some homework to doā€¦

@Zorro - This was my thought as well.

Compete in this thing.

Iā€™ve watched many video contests and it doesnā€™t matter what your skill level is. Just have some fun. From my perspective the yoyo community is very friendly to all skill levels.

Maybe compete this time and practice to be a judge next year.

Iā€™m in!

This and the previous conversations on this subject bring very good points. I am new, but I can watch well and judge well (IMO). I, however, do not feel confident in competing at my skill level. Especially after watching Chase Baxter and owngry.

Video contests are for fun, which is correct, but I find more fun in winning, then I do finishing last.

But, being that you all want me to compete, I will do so.

Got my 1A Prelim video in.

I think itā€™s fine to judge no matter what skill level just so long as the judger is consistent and awards more points for the better tricks and combos and routines.

What he said

Then again, I understand even if you are consistent, you may be awarding more points to certain elements than to better elements.

Yes, this is true, but isnā€™t it up to the judges to decide whatā€™s a better trick?

Experience will inform that decision, though. I can think of any number of 1A tricks that look so much more impressive than they really are. If you donā€™t have a deep 5A vocabulary, you will not necessarily be able to reliably identify the difference between flash and substance.

Iā€™m not saying youā€™d be wrong with every evaluation, but the margin of error for false positives and false negatives increases exponentially when itā€™s not backed by experience and knowledge.
