Has anyone gone recently? You think security is feeling pretty okay lately? I’m going in a couple days and I want to take one monometal but idk if they will let me get into Disneyland.
I walked around throwing everywhere at knot’s berry farm last week, and Lego land earlier in the year. No one said anything. We’re going to Disney in September. I’ll try it out then also
Imo, if you’re paying the obscene amount of money Disney charges and still find yourself needing to be entertained with a yoyo, that doesn’t speak well of Disney. Just my (really unhelpful) two cents.
Knots berry farm sounds like an anti YoYo farm to me by name alone
Disney is a lot of down time…
That’s fair. Definitely not trying to tell anyone when/where they can yoyo. It’s just that if I’m personally forking out cash for someplace like Disney (never been, actually), I imagine that I’m doing so for an experience, and I’d rather be in the moment for that.
But then again, I suppose that may be someone’s only vacation for quite a while, and it may be a rare opportunity to have extra time to do what we all love - yoyo. I’m not here to police anyone on how they use their time, so I’m going to quit giving opinions no one asked for now (on this matter, anyway ).
I took my MK1/SW Harbinger a couple of months ago.
Security didn’t bat an eye, it was nice to have something to mess with while waiting in line.
When in doubt take wood. Scanners can’t see the wood
Reason #346 to learn and own wooden fixie
I carried my normal EDC Butterfly into every park at Disneyworld no problem.
One tip about Disney: if you’re going for multiple days and you get pulled and searched day 1, ask why they pulled you and if you can do something about it. Day 1 they told me it was my backup battery and my kids’ kindles, and if I bagged them in clear plastic and held them in front of me when I went through the detector, then they wouldn’t pull me. Worked like a charm for the rest of the trip.
Back in 2015, Downtown Disney CA used to have a Duncan kiosk, and yoyoing in the parks was OK.
Before they closed the kiosk in mid 2016, they started cracking down at security points. That was when “i heard yoyos originated as weapons in the Philippines” was at its peak. Duncan kiosk cast members had to politely tell guests, “that was rocks on strings” etc. Also property management was starting to crack down at downtown disney.
Cut to late 2016, when yoyo, kendama, and stringed skill toy were banned (except the ones that got smuggled in secret lol) on the basis of “it might fly off the string and injure a guest” and just the fact that an object tied to the end of a string might actually be used to injure guests or cause a backup in line/crowds.
Nowadays they WILL still confiscate metal/wood/plastic/pom/everything else yoyos, kendama, and stringed skill toys—even selfie sticks too. Disneyland CA has a lot of rules for going onto the property, includig DCA and Downtown Disney.
Please just be aware of what’s in your bags, pockets, strollers, mobility devices. They have metal detectors before you can enter Downtown Disney and theme park gates area, so if you are going to bring a pocket throw, stick to plastic or wood, and save it for before/after the park (their security on property has same rules as checkpoints).
When I went a couple of months ago I just put my metal yoyo in the tray along with my wallet and keys when I went through the metal detector and nobody said anything.
I worked at Disney and did Security at Universal Studios.
Truly it’s up to the security guard whether they deem it a threat or not and remove from persons.
They can really say “anything” is dangerous if they determine it to be so. That being said it’s a yo-yo and I doubt anyone would remove it.
And if they did you can ask for a supervisor who may just don’t throw it once you tell them the value. But honestly there’s a lot that is up to the guard and the security “threat level ” issued at the park that day
i’m done giving Disney money. they are ridiculous.
PST that’s the same way the TSA works too.
It’s amazing to me how much in general is up to personal interpretation. @Captrogers
Kinda makes sense, but also they make some weird choices lol
Yeah I’ve taken a screw driver through 100s of times and randomly got stopped and it taken at JFK. Wild how little consistency there is
@Captrogers i used to travel a lot for work and once got through and realized I left a pocket knife in my backpack from camping that weekend.
Was SHOCKED no one noticed. It was just in a pocket out in the open if you will
Years ago (decades), when metal detectors first came out in government buildings, I had a small pocket knife in my pocket. I took it out and put it in the tray. I went through the detector and was clear when the very elderly guard noticed the knife (~2 inch) in the tray. He freaked out. I thought he was going to pull his revolver. I put my hands up and asked him if I could leave and take the knife back to my car. When he calmed down, he said that would be ok. I thought he was going to have a heart attack!!! He never should have been a security guard, too frail and excitable.
I basically fell in love with yoyoing in 4th grade standing in lines for rides while yoyoing at Disney world.
