YoYoRecreation Appreciation Thread

You probably need to make a distinction between the old and the new multi-metal YYR. I find the new multi-metal YYR to outperform the older single-material throws. But the reputation and this thread is based on the old YYR models which each had their own unique YYR feel.

New and over all favorite: Draupnir; waiting on the Lazer; not thrown the Dazzler.

Old models:

  1. Sleipnir
  2. E=MC^2
  3. Stargazer
  4. Attune
  5. Arachnophobia
  6. Gleipnir
  7. Mr. Butcher
  8. Clash 2011
  9. Re-Clash
  10. 44 Clash Cube

Of course, opinions will vary.

Fixed number 5 for you

roops!

Just got home from 2 weeks of vacation and opened up my treasures including the Draupnir and Messiah. I hate you guys. The only thing that may save me from lighting thousands more on fire is that Iā€™m not a big fan of V shaped throws.

The black blasted Draupnir plays insanely well, feels great with the blast and just screams class. Iā€™m not sure it would ever even stop spinning if I didnā€™t bind it. If I loved V shaped throws I might have wet myself out of joy on the first throw. Despite preferring non V shaped throws and having it be just a little big for my preferred size range, Iā€™m still really enjoying it. It definitely seems to punish a bad throw with some vicious vibe but thatā€™s just encouragement to stop being lazy and throw properly.

As far as the Messiah goes, I honestly feel like I robbed someone paying $75 for it. Now I know why people have called it the best undersized yoyo for years. It looks/feels smaller than it really is and the 68g makes it very sturdy. I really prefer my yoyos in the under 66g range, especially for undersized throws but those extra few grams are probably a huge part of what I love about it. Itā€™s like a little monster.

I have to agree. The Draupnir is an absolute beast of a yoyo, but I still personally feel that the Sleipnir reigns supreme.

I am curious, what is everyoneā€™s favorite YYR that isnā€™t bi-metal, but solid metal?

Sleip all the way!

Yeah, Sleipnir reigns supreme.

But remember, we are comparing YYR here. Everyone of them is better than just about anything out there; IMHO.

Although I have only tried one, I can already tell that that is the case.

YYR taught me that heavier can be good

Got my Laser. Love it. Definitely heavy compared to what I normally prefer, but actually in a pretty pleasurable way, definitely not sluggish or clumsy. Feels super unique in the hand. Canā€™t explain it. Something about the really organic profile combined with the narrow width just feels cool to hold. Really un-YYR and a super awesome counterpoint to the Draupnir. The engineering just blows my mind. As far as I know itā€™s bimetal, but you just canā€™t tell by looking at it other than a slight seam on the rim and slight color difference. But wow in the cup you just canā€™t tell where one ends and the other begins. This is proper engineering and really a gem. Canā€™t wait for an anoā€™d version. As far as play Iā€™ve only thrown it a few minutes but definitely has the performance of something youā€™d expect to be way more radically shaped. Itā€™s brilliant.

Compared to the Draupnir.

Inside the cup.

You got it, nice!

Wow, you got yours fast. I am still waiting for Mr. Postman to bring mine.

Is it possible that there is no end/begin on the cup? The center of the cup, where is says ā€œLaserā€ looks the same as the inner-rim does to me.

It almost looks like the inner cup is one single disc, made of a different material (7075?) that is sitting inside the outer shell (6061?). Sort of an inner-cap? You have one; what do you think?

What? YYR would use 6061 aluminium? Your assumption is truly scandalous!!

Thatā€™s certainly an interesting thought. I donā€™t think thatā€™s the case looking at it, I feel like there might be a slight difference in the material between the inner rim and cup. I dunno. Iā€™ll be curious to hear what other people think. Either way itā€™s an absolute beast. Spins so ridiculously strong.

ā€¦ What was I thinking? :o

What about a different material that goes down the inner wall then stops where the engravings are. If you look closely in that picture it looks as though it is a different material in the flat part of the cup than on the wall of the cup. It might be just the lighting but could you check NathanC, just in case.

I received my Laser today; All I can say is: wow! Ok, super-wow!

From what I can see by inspection, it is as I was speculating. The inner-cup is a separate piece that is set into the outer shell of the yoyo like form-fit inner caps. The spin is out of this world and the stability is even better. It is much heavier than the Draupnir; but surprisingly does not lose much in the agility department. It will not go as fast as the Draupnir, but the Laser will certainly go. It feels much like the Gleipnir - which I love.

All in all, a very depressing yoyo when you compare it to what we are seeing currently from our domestic manufacturers. Lets hope this lights a fire to renew yo-yo R&D here in North America (yes, I mean Canada too). These new designs from YYR are showing what can be done when you THINK; ā€¦ outside the box also.

New favorite YYR?

I completely agree with you YoYoGeezer. I received mine today as well, and is simply one of the most amazing YoYoā€™s I have ever thrown, or owned.

The first thought I had as well was it reminded me of the Gleipner, which was my favorite YYR until they launched the Draupnir. However I feel Iā€™m not as able to be near as fast as I can with the Draupnir. It forces me to slow down just a wee bit, but not enough to complain about.

We have a lot of catching up to do here in the western part of the world to equal this type of R&D. Sadly the business climate created by our leaders has assured me that will not happen anytime soon.

Now Iā€™m Really curious to see how the Dazzler must feel, beings this looks like the same shape, only with some less costly materials. Hopefully one of the Dazzler owners can offer us an opinion between the two, assuming of course they have purchased a Lazer.
