I like it!
Thanks Patrick,
Was a bit tricky till I got the mounting pieces right.
But now the break smooth and without to much damage/left over on the parts.
Wow I just really like this thread. You guys should talk the science and methodologies with each other so you can collectively get better with it. Basecamp vibes lol
Thats the way to get better! I talk with a bunch of different people about designs and share them and get feedback. Mainly @MarkD and rob from airetic strings, but others too.
I don’t do CAD design but I read through a lot of these posts and there’s some really cool stuff going on in here. I think if you guys added to your post with a detailed WHY to some of your design decisions, it would open up some really cool progress for this thread.
I’m planning on putting together my own video series to talk about some of the thoughts that go into planning, prototyping, and releasing a yoyo design.
What sort of questions would you all like to see answered?
The more technical, the better. I can’t explain “float”, for example.
this is a fantastic idea! in my opinion this is singularly one of the most informative and helpful threads that exists online for our hobby. your insight in design, and your commitment in helping people figure out their own projects here has been so, so valuable – definitely to me, personally, and i’m sure anybody who has been remotely interested in the design process for throws. compiling an organised series to streamline all of that knowledge would be an incredible thing to do.
i’ll think of more questions, but for starters, i’d be interested to hear your thoughts on Moment of Inertia, and how to make sense of these numbers vis-a-vis other factors such as overall diameter, width, etc!
Love to see a detailed section on guts, because that’s what I struggled with the most up until recently and I’m sure a lot of other people struggle there too.
Tried to take a shutter-esque shape and make it organic/bubbly. 58x48 7075 probably around 64.5 grams.
Also, heres one that I designed a week ago. Took pieces from the 7068 throw I posted a while back and changed the cup up and gave it some punchline-esque rims… 55x48, 65 grams, 7075. If I ever competed it would probably be with something similar to this.
For practice, I just designed my take on a Shutter WA Ultra. Bi-metal styling of course, same colorway as my Brown mjolnir lol
Not even kidding, I looked at the profile and thought “redesigned bimetal Shutter”.
Also as a design exercise I threw this together in conjunction,
56 mm x 44.5 mm
pretty generic looking bimetal with very similar design aesthetics as the first design, and it has nearly the same mass and moment of inertia as the larger model, would be interesting to see how the pair compare in terms of feel
Those both look great!
Updated this round thing and ordered prototypes.
6061, somewhere around 56.8mm x 45mm, 61.5g.
Was shooting for the same weight distro and mass as the Umbra, in a “collapsed” shape.
I get Diffraction and Murmur vibes.
Ooh I like this, looks like a larger/lighter Murmur. Just lemme know when you’re ready to take my money.
Glad you like how it looks!
Hope it plays how I’m imagining.
Float has to do with three factors; overall weight, the amount of centre weight and how much air resistance the design has when in play.
At least that’s what I believe. How the equation would look is a mystery to me.
